Another pin-up SN, just because ...

This one just isn't trying very hard. She's setting a low mark for Snow White cosplayers. I can imagine the photographer ... "No! You're just supposed to take ONE bite!"

Nice! I like the goth Snow White with floral tat sleeves!

I know realize that some of the more scary renditions of snow white are not much scarier than the aforementioned infamous video I have written about in the earlier post.

Three vastly profound thoughts:

1. Charlize Theron is not only beautiful, but one of the greatest actresses of all time. Guess I better see the current film.

2. Nearly all successful libertines ( see Casanova 's autobiography) seem to prefer ingenues--I never understood why Marilyn Monroe was considered sexier than Audrey Hepburn or Vivian Leigh.

3. Quote of the day: " Who would want to watch Snow White and The Seven Samurai? "--- from Pinky and The Brain

Cheers,

Mario

Unforgiveable is good? Was Diddy closely involved in the development?

I understand (from reading Burr) that SJP was actively involved in Lovely and that it's better for it.

Yes, Diddy was probably even more involved than SJP. I agree - close and authentically concerned involvement of *anybody* in perfume development has to be a good thing. I think it's where nobody sweats the details that you get the really befuddling stuff.

The perfumer (David Apel, I think - maybe more) won a Fifi award for Unforgivable. There are also quite a few people out there who prefer it to Creed Millesime Imperial, which was Diddy's favorite, and generally considered the starting point for Unforgivable. Some treat Unforgivable as a more casual MI for daily wear, although I personally think it is more "evening" than MI.

To me, Unforgivable is clearly a mass-market rendition of MI - more candy, more obvious main accord, and more up-front drama. But all of that was done very well, and the Fifi was highly deserved, IMO. It's one of the few celebrity/style-maker scents that is primarily hated because people hate the person, and not simply because it's bad or horribly redundant. Our buddy Astaroth loves Unforgivable and despises Diddy!

Diddy claimed to have sniffed over 600 samples to get something he was happy with (I think I found it on his blog), and I've always theorized that his holding up his end of the log, combined with the perfumers holding up their end, was the reason for the success. Besides starting out from a very nice place.

All this talk about Snow White is giving me some pretty strange dreams. Kinda like what happened to my wife and the stinky dog, but I'm not so sure about the guy under the bed.

It certainly is with this one.

As Mario pointed out above, Snow White is a sort of ingenue character, and this is what appeals to me, I think. She is like early Audrey Hepburn. Beautiful, innocent, kind, and good. Why do libertines favor them? Because are conquerors and explorers - to win their hearts is to conquer unexplored territory. A Marilyn is as much a conquest as buying a ticket to Disney World.

A few other (mis)interpretations ..

I have always, from the time I was a wee lad, wanted to re-style her as a blonde. This is typical MdM behaviour: Never quite understood why she wasn't all white. Of course, as you all know, I'm more of a Marie-Antoinette guy. Greetings from Fashion Week to all, btw. It's a MADHOUSE here--and it's only going to get worse: I had a video camera stuck on my scary Frank Zappa face all day yesterday for four hours while i stood on a tenth floor balcony w/the eiffel tower in the background in the wind & cold with NONSTOP:"Oh! there's a siren in the background. We have to do it again!" Now: It's QUITE clear to me why most actors & actresses are all on one substance, another, or several. Just a quick hello to all. Miss you! xoxo :-) leMdM

And "chibi" Snow White - what can you say? Almost as cute as the Kitty version!

See here now: I just don't get the black hair. It looks wrong to me. She should have white or platinum blonde hair.....black hair just doesn't look right on her....not even in the cartoon: Of course, this is just my opinion. My last message from BN was "Fuck off." So--I'm keeping that in mind--no need to repeat it.

Hey, great to see you! Miss you, too. Sorry I didn't catch the end of ix 01 thread, but there's always the next flight when you're on Air MdM, and why not just chill in the lounge? Speaking of chill.....

Hope you're having a great time. I'm quite psyched by this song and this video. BREATHE IT IN.....

It's ironic that the movie I simply can't take my eyes off her in is.....

Monster.

She is SO good in that. You simply would not think that a South African beautiful person/model/actress could get the nuances of low-rent middle America so well. In fact, the problem was, it was so realistic and so close, it humanized Wuornos, even as depraved and crazed as Theron was able to go with her portrayal. Either that, or Theron was able to see some shred of humanity in Wuornos that most of us can't - which is still to her credit. No matter what - a remarkable portrayal.

Sorry for this entirely off-topic reply of mine, since it has NOTHING to do with Snow White, but indeed with Charlize Theron.

I wanted to ask you, Mr. Perfumisto, if you have also seen Charlize Theron starring in yet another fabulous role, namely in one of my favorite films, as real life Swedish starlet and Peter Seller's second wife Britt Ekland? In my opinion, in this film not only that she looks identical to a younger Britt Ekland, as if they could have been twin sisters if they would have been more contemporary, but she also manages to infuse a part almost any other actress would have plain way to linear, shallow and ditsy, with almost an Art Film intensity and expressiveness.
As with the very different real-life character of Aline Wournos, she also shows impressive and virtually so far unexplored possible personality facets of Ms. Ekland.
In fact, she was more convincing as Ekland, much more so than Geoffrey Rush- still a good actor and a very well crafted part- was credible as Sellers.

Here's another observation which is completely off-subject. Since this is Rube's thread--I'm just making myself at home. I send this message from the whirlwind of madness of Paris Fashion Week, in the shoes of my new role, which are killing me the way new shoes often will. Having to keep them on all day, from breakfast to dinner at 10:00pm, to the time I get to bed, after the party. I think....of my dream wife Kirstin Dunst....playing brilliantly my Heroine of choice Queen Marie-Antoinette of France....waking up with the dawn of her first morning at the Court of Versailles:

"This is Ridiculous."

Mi casa es su casa. Feel free to join in my little Snow White love-a-thon any time time you like!

By the way, that "fuck off" was not from Basenotes - just from some random prick that was passing by.

I hope all goes well for you in Paris. Your schedule sounds rough! I have a little something for you when you get back, by the way ...

I knew from whence came the order: I did answer it, if anyone took note. There is such madness going on here that I'm hoping your little something won't be a wreath of white casablanca lilies & tuberoses with a large R.I.P incrusted in wood violets......in any event: It will be much appreciated......

Suddenly the idea of meeting Snow White in a dark alley is not so appealing. Maybe she'll go back to sleep, or at least pass out.

Very cool, Shades! That is quite neat - though I would love to see her face. Goggles? Engineering glasses? No problem! But I'd love to see the smile on her face!

Using your picture as a clue, I went off in search of more steampunk Snow Whites. Found some nice "real" ones, but I'll respect their privacy by not reposting them. HOWEVER.....

First - a couple of neat drawings:

More innocent....

More cool.....

But the coolest of all - a steampunk wedding! (the product of a Google indexing snafu)

The full wedding is here - truly eye candy for all steampunk fans (I've had steampunk dreams, just to be clear!)

Ken - I will definitely check this out. No - I have *not* seen this, and it sounds great. Thank you very much for telling me about that!

I get the impression that in a different life where her skills weren't properly channeled, Charlize Theron would probably have either been a spy/impostor or one of those "pretender" types.

I don't remember much about Ekland's films - I think my parents were watching them when I was a kid. I do remember Sellers - I remember laughing myself silly when I saw "The Party".

I like the steampunk take on SW. Here are a couple more ...

Cute, but pretty much of the "goggles=steampunk" school of steampunk character design:

This one is more faithful to the SW dress code, including the distinctive puffy sleeves, with some nice steampunky (i.e. Victorian-era) wardrobe details, including a leather helmet and strappy thigh gizmo:

And a very cool steampunk Evil Queen and Magic Mirror:

How many can you name without cheating?

I can name more of them than any grown man should be able to (hey - I have a young daughter).

Jasmine, Snow White, Mulan, Aurora, Cinderella, Pocahontas, Tiana, Belle, and Ariel. Boo-yah!

You have to admit - Disney does heroines pretty well. Although clearly they're even better when they're, say....

STEAMPUNKAHONTAS!

Hell yeah! STEAM WHITE!

Tiana's tough. The story's not as well know as the others, and the movie changes all the details anyway. If I hadn't seen it 20 times in the last year I would have missed her too. The newest princess, Rapunzel, isn't in the shot, but she would have been easy.

I was unsure about Aurora/Cinderella, too. I haven't seen Cinderella in a long time (about to be released on bluray!) and didn't remember what her dress looks like. And who knows what color Aurora's dress is supposed to be? The two bumbling fairies, Flora and Merryweather, keep changing it - "Make it pink!" "Make it blue!".

Ultimately, the one front and center had to be Cinderella. After all, as I mentioned elsewhere, if the princesses were the Justice League, Cinderella would have to be Superman.

But, in exploring all of these rich and varied interpretations of the iconic character of Snow White, I think we've wandered from the original question. Getting some perspective is always helpful, and we've gotten a lot of perspective here! Perhaps it's time to revisit the question.

What is it about Snow White?

There must be more to it than just Kristen Stewart's extreme prettiness.

I think I have an idea ...

Has anyone ever read the Grimms' original story? It's in German, but there are translations of course. It's not that long, but I'm too lazy to read it right now anyway. I think I've got the gist of it, though.

From the opening ...
Once upon a time, as a Queen sits sewing at her window, she pricks her finger on her needle and three drops of blood fall on the snow that had fallen on her ebony window frame. As she looks at the blood on the snow, she says to herself, "Oh, how I wish that I had a daughter that had skin white as snow, lips red as blood, and hair black as ebony". Soon after that, the Queen gives birth to a baby girl who has skin white as snow, lips red as blood, and hair black as ebony. They name her Snow White, and soon after, the Queen dies.

One year later, the King re-marries. His new queen is beautiful, but vain and arrogant. [We men are often so willing to overlook much ugliness when looking on a beautiful face]

In Grimms', Snow is seven years old when the mirror tells the queen that her beauty has been surpassed by that of her step-daughter.

Overcome with envy and hatred for the girl, the queen commands her hunstman to take Snow to the forest to kill her and return with her lungs and liver.

As the huntsman is about to plunge his knife into Snow's heart, she bursts into tears and begs him to let her go. Because she is so beautiful, he takes pity on her and does.

On his way back he kills a young boar, and brings the queen its lungs and liver. She then cooks and eats them, thinking they are 7-year old Snow's.

Nice, eh?

Bear with me. I have a point. I'm just not in a hurry to get to it ...

- - - Updated - - -

OK - I'm about to get on another long haul flight. I'm hoping that Snow White and the Huntsman will be playing and I'll have another chance to watch it.

I need to do some research before my rambling overanalysis of Snow White and/or Kristen Stewart's gorgeousity goes any further

But, before I go, here she is in Into the Wild, as the irresistable jailbait that the hero somehow resists ...
