Sample pass, 2012 Reformulation of C&E Evelyn Rose (USA only)

The sample pass is now closed to new members.

Oh those dreaded reformulations! Yet once in a while, fragrances are actually improved by reformulation.

The original Evelyn (1993-2003) had marvelous sillage and longevity and a great sandalwood base.

Its successor, the first Evelyn Rose (2003-2012), always seemed wimpy to me. The edt vanished from my skin without a trace in 15 minutes flat, and even the edp lacked depth.

That version of Evelyn Rose has been replaced. This new edp formulation adds notes of bergamot and amber, and lasts considerably longer than its predecessor.

The Crabtree & Evelyn store at West Farms Mall, Farmington, CT kindly allowed me to decant some juice from their tester of the new Evelyn Rose edp, for the purpose of a sampling group (Thank you, Ashley!)
• To this I will add samples decanted from my own bottle of the original Evelyn, for comparison.

Each member will have one set of samples to keep, consisting of 0.7 ml dabber vials of both fragrances.
Men who love roses are welcome to join our sampling pass. Roses have no gender!
To participate you must have joined BN before today's date and have made at least 10 posts.

Please post some impressions. Doesn't need to be lengthy! Let's give readers some idea of what the new fragrance is like. Not everyone is near a store to test for themselves, and some buy blind.

I'd like to set up 3 groups with 2 members each. (USA only due to postal restrictions.)

I'll mail 2 sets of samples to the first members of each group, who will keep one set of samples for themselves and mail the 2nd set of samples to the person after them in their group. First 3 members, PM me your name/address; second 3 members, give your address to the person mailing to you.

Postage to send it to the second member will cost you $1.95. No need to go to the post office-- just throw some stamps on the mailer and drop it in the mailbox.

Who's interested?

Group 1-- mailed 10/3/12
1. calilove
2. PerfumedLady

Group 2
1. cestrum nocturnum-- mailed 10/25/12

Group 3
1. closed
2. closed

I clicked on the link for a compact yesterday (agree 100 per cent about overpriced) to find out they are Sold Out.

Thanks for letting us all know and for another pass.

Twolf, the compacts are back in stock on the website now (http://www.crabtree-evelyn.com/eng/p..._compact?79811)

Edit: The link doesn't seem to work any more but as of now, I can still search for "compacts" on the C&E website and have them come up-- or see the photos in post #9 below. Can people really have bought these out at that price?

Also, our local store has them. You can't believe how heavy they are-- what are they made of, lead?

Because they swivel open, the actual pan of solid fragrance is kidney shaped (smaller than the compact, in other words.)

I said to the SA yesterday that they really ought to sell refills and she said C&E are actually considering offering refills. Even so, $40 is over the top. I could see $25-30 for the compact if refills were available.

>>Are you joining us, Wolfie? I know you admired original Evelyn.

That is weird! I'm able to put one in my shopping cart (not that I plan to check out!)
Just go to the Crabtree & Evelyn website and do a search for "compact" and all their solids will come up.

Okay I'm going to put up a photo or two borrowed from the website for you, Wolfie.

BTW, what are you studying, Twolf?

I just finished my annual 20 credit hours of continuing ed required for me to renew my PT license.

What a gorgeous compact & bag set! I wish more fragrance lines would come up with these.

I will PM you in the PM, 30R. Nothing really exciting, just stuff for my job.
I'm interested, 30R. I remember distinctly the original Evelyn from the roses sample pass, the Evelyn Rose at that time made no imact on me, though. Curious to see how it's improved- and I agree, sometimes reformulations are a good thing.

PerfumedLady, did you ever get your samples from calilove?
Not yet, 30R, I think he's waiting for a bottle to arrive (any day now) so he could include a sample of his new purchase. He has been in contact with me, should be very soon.

Also, haven't heard if you've had a chance to sample this, calilove? Any impressions to share?

That's ok, calilove, I figured it must be something that couldn't be helped when you were missing. Just glad you're ok!

When you have a minute, either pm me or post back to your thread with opinions on your new smellie. I so hope you're liking it!
testing both of these..... 1993 was just floral and roses..... the 2012 one was way sweeter all i get is bergamot. i would rather wear the 1993 one but the 2012 one is a little more pleasant on the nose but the 2012 doesnt last at all. neither have monster projection for me thats one thing i look for i dont mind being the "cologne guy" i like being noticed lol but 2012 bam bergamot bergamot bergamot then poof gone

Are there still spots open on this one? If so, I am interested. 30 Roses, you have been so generous with starting sample passes and sharing so much with so many!!! You're truly an inspiration! (I know that sounds cheesy, but I mean it!) <3

I am mailing samples of Evelyn Rose and Evelyn to PerfumedLady as she did not receive the ones from calilove.
That's going above and beyond, 30R, thank you! You don't have to at all but this is so kind. Sorry it turned out this way.

Oh, boy, was Evelyn one gorgeous rose. As 30R remembers, I tried it once already, in her roses pass. Having sampled a load of roses since then, this one seems even more special. Opens up fresh and true and yes, the sandalwood base is so wonderful. The rose deepens into the woods and becomes silken as rose milk lotion. Very delicate yet with presence and depth. A scent I appreciate more each time I sniff.

Evelyn Rose while nice, is not as special. However, I do think this new version is an improvement. As I said earlier, the previous Evelyn Rose didn't make much of an impression on me. This one is definitely more memorable. The idea is one I like very much- bergamot, rose and sheer amber but the execution feels a bit synthetic to me. Bergamot has not fared well in the restrictions department in my opinion; it often feels too sticky and sweet to me in more recent scents. I do like the rose note here- it still feels quite natural, blooming and deepening on the skin. Nice light amber that never overpowers the rose; this is not the heavy and sweet type of amber here. A very polite and pretty scent. Just wish the bergamot were more natural smelling but I think this is Big Brother's fault, not C & E's. Do wish we could have original Evelyn back but that sandalwood is a must; just no way to do that now.

Thank you so much for the chance to check this out and especially to re-visit Evelyn, 30R. I'm such a sucker for that pretty C & E packaging that I'd love to find a scent in their line for me. Evelyn Rose is not the one but it does encourage me to sample more of the line. I think they added a lot of character to the scent with this latest reformulation. Many, many thanks to Ashley for contributing our samples; you are greatly appreciated!
