Best 'openings' of all time? - Page 2

the Pure Malt opening I consider to be the best sweet opening there is...unfortunately, all goes downhill from there, still a great fragrance but once it gets really moist and stuff not the most impressive...the opening though with the berries whoa that's good stuff

Amouage Hommage, then 10 places empty, Sacrebleu, Le au Chic, No 18 chanel

For me, it's Le Male (sweet anise candy), Helmut Lang EDC (musky butter and baby powder) and Lumiere Noire (indescribable - just really, really good).

I also love the openings of Mugler Cologne, CdG 2MAN and Invasion Barbare

Too many candidates, really. Perhaps I'll vote in those that evoke a place or time. For me at least.

SMN Nostalgia - motor oil, petrol fumes, hot rubber, baking tarmac. A day at the races/pit stop.

PdN Sacrebleu - fuzzy, ozonic, carpet deodoriser - Undergrad days all over again, lol, circa 1993.

Sadly, I've never had the chance to smell this classic. And despite the EDT and EDP versions having a drydown that make me want to scrub until I'm raw (they are my Kryptonite...), the opening slightly sweet, slightly spiced, rich, thick Lemon scent has got to go down as the best opening ever.

#sigh#

Anyone know of anything with the same opening as HR that then goes off in a different direction?

M7. I wish the scent didn't develop at all, and that amazing opening would just stick around the whole time.

I agree with many already mentioned.
I'll add vintage C&S No.88 and LV Piper Nigrum to the list.

I really love the opening of vintage Third Man.

Ah man, I totally forgot about Virgin Island Water.

That's seriously THE BEST opening ever - sweet, green, tart lime and coconut.

Definitely G.I.T. and Midnight in Paris.

I take back what I said, The One definitely has a much nicer opening than Gentleman
post #79 of 88
Creed does it for me. There's always one note that stands front and center that makes you instantly take notice.

My favorite openings are:

Roadster

Lumiere Noir

Aventus

Rive Gauche (I love that anise note)

Menthe Fraiche

I love the opening of Portrait of a Lady, with it's rose and juicy berries, but it also indicates what is to come in the drydown.

Gucci pH II
Pure Malt
Bvlgari Man
Narciso Rodriguez him
Bang

Cacharel Pour Homme, Givenchy Gentleman vintage, ADP Colonia

Grey Vetiver.

The opening is absolutely stunning. I never get enough of it. Unfortunately they ruined the mid with a rubber glove note. I don't know what it is but it smells like rubber glove.

I love the opening of Menthe Fraiche also, but the dry down is too short lived and has too much yerba mate in if for my taste.
