5 must have fragrances for any mens fragrance enthusiast

Thread Starter
I know we've had this type of topic in the past, but what would you say your top 5 fragrances that you suggest all fragrance enthusiasts own are?

Ideally, they would be pretty widely liked and versatile. Although, you could break it down by seasons so you have one for each season and then one extra/wild card.

I'll break it down by season:

Winter-Tom Ford Tobacco Vanille
Spring- Aventus
Summer- Millesime Imperial
Fall-Pure Malt (?)
Wildcard-GIT

Updated list now that I have smelled a lot more (I'm using more than 5, with 5 being bolded):

Winter- Norne/Sova
Spring- Chypre Palatin/Jardin d'Amalfi/Green Irish Tweed
Summer- Neroli Portofino/Millesime Imperial
Fall- Pure Malt/Ambre Precieux/Musc Ravageur/TV
post #2 of 78
My current Top 5:

Dior Homme Intense
Creed Aventus
Tom Ford Extreme
Gucci Pour Homme II
Terre d'Hermes
Winter - Bond No. 9 New Haarlem
Spring - Bond No. 9 Hamptons
Summer - Creed Green Irish Tweed
Fall - Aramis Havana
Wild Card - Giorgio Beverly Hills Red for Men
post #4 of 78
Not necessarily my favorites, but I think these 5 would make a good foundation masculine wardrobe with broad appeal:

Rive Gauche Pour Homme
Aramis
Egoiste
L'Instant Extreme
Dior Homme
Tobacco Vanille
Aventus
Egoiste
Green Irish Tweed
Fahrenheit, Fahrenheit Aqua, Fahrenheit Absolute
post #6 of 78
I recommend all fragrance enthusiast's to at least try:

Green Irish Tweed
Fahrenheit
Rive Gauche
L`Air du Desert Marocain
Burberry London
After trying as many as you can, five that you're so comfortable in that it just feels like second nature, a part of you, and you never question it, no matter what kind of social setting you're in. Equally comfortable with grandma, your boss, your best friend, a smokin' hot, barely attainable love interest, on the subway, with your spouse, your kids, while shopping, while sitting next to someone you don't know on a five hour flight (though for this one you should be polite and not use a lot), and everyone else you can think of. You pick these fragrances yourself.

I think a good collection would normally have these 5 in them:

GIT / Chez Bond
Tom Ford Extreme

Of course, to each his own...

I'm asumming your talking about being a collector.

As far as I hear off most talk about these

1. GIT by Creed
2. Egoist by Chanel
3. Aventus by Creed
4. JPG
5. DHI by Dior (I guess the original)

Im not saying these are the best as that is based on your taste. Hell I dont own any one of these except DHI but Ihave the reformulation version. These are legendary (well not Aventus but its already reaching hype at alarming rate)classics regardless and a collector should own these.
Here goes for now
Musc ravegour or chanel coromandel
Mugler Cologne or GIT
Tom Ford oud wood or Ramon Monegal agar musk
Dior Homme or Bond no. 9 blecker st.
Aventus or LDDM Andy Tauer
And not Aventus then I guess AdG cause of its best seller status but....why choose this over something that's already gonna be a legend in two more years.
Noir de Noir
Fahrenheit
Green Irish Tweed
LIDGE
Derby
I definitely do NOT think there is even ONE "must-have" fragrance that every fragrance enthusiast must own, much less five. Tastes vary too much.
On the lower end affordable:

Faherenheit
Rive Gauche
Guerlain Heritage
AdP Colonia
Pure Havane

6) Santal Noble

High end:

Tobacco vanille
Derby
M
Xerjoff range, Nio, Uden, Kobe...
Absolu Pour le Soir
Dior Homme Intense
LIDGE
Kouros
Tuscany (Original)
Rocabar

And if something happened where one of these were to be discontinued, I would add BVL Soir to my list as well. Awesome scent. At least for me it is

Spring: Aventus
Summer: Terre d'Hermes
Fall: Dior Homme
Wildcard (anyday anytime): Mugler Cologne
post #28 of 78
DHI
Aventus
Vetiver Tonka
Tobacco Vanille or Pure Havane (depends on how much love you have for tobacco)
Bleu De Chanel
I'd say
ADP Colonia
Dior Homme
Guerlain Vetiver

as a start.
Possibly Amouage Lyric Men and Habit Rouge if you really insist
post #30 of 78
Habit Rouge Guerlain
Encre Noir Lalique
Tsar VC & A
Eau Savage xtreme Dior
Tuscany Per Uomo (vintage) by Aramis

anything by Amouage!
Dior Homme
YSL L'Homme
Allure Homme Sport
Armani Code
Pure Malt

Just a side note to this. I've been a fragrance fan for 1,5-2 years only and BN Threads listing top5's, top 10 winter etc helped me a lot to find the right direction. These helped me to get to know perfumes to test and later to buy and build my collection. IMO this threads are great. Thanks

poivre samarcante hermes
kenzo pour homme
rive gauche ysl

only 5?

Or Black
Knize Ten

Jicky
Sycomore
Paco Rabanne
Eternity
Obsession (or possibly Joop Homme, if Obsession doesn't grab one)
Chrome
Kiton Men

My personal five, I could have easily named 5 Creeds, but I figured I'd list different houses

Creed Aventus
Dior Homme Intense
L'Instant de Guerlain Extreme
YSL La Nuit de L'Homme
Tom Ford Tobacco Vanille
Knize Ten
Penhaligons Blenheim Bouquet
YSL Kouros
Issey Miyake L'eau D'Issey
Lalique Encre Noire

That's leather, citrus, modern, vetiver (woods) and spicy covered - all that's missing really is an amber/Oriental so if you'll permit me ...

CK Obsession for Men
In no particular order:

Acqua di Parma Colonia
Aventus
Millesime Imperial
Sycomore
Terre d' Hermes

That gives you a citrus, woody, aromatic/fruity and smoky. Something for every day of the year
post #40 of 78
Egoiste
Sycamore
LDDM
Amouage Jubilation XXV
Cuirelle, Ramón Monegal
Knize Ten
Or Black
Sycomore
Habit Rouge
Eau Sauvage

I agree, I like these types of threads, regardless of how many of them there are. I think it's fun to think about in different terms and they also helped me out a ton early on and still do in regards to expanding my horizons and finding new stuff to try. Personally, I think of something like this as if a friend were maybe asking me for my best recommendation on a very-easy-to-like and wear for most occassions (versatility would be key) cologne for each season (obviously you could still wear them anytime of year, though and interchange them throughout). I'd only be able to recommend what I've yet to lay my nose on, so at this point in time, I'd say:

Summer: Green Irish Tweed
Fall: Gucci Pour Homme II
Winter: Burberry London
Spring: Aventus
Wild Card: Rive Gauche Pour Homme
Bonus Wild Card: Terre d'Hermes Parfum
Gucci pour homme II
Creed green irish tweed
Hdp Ambre 114
Guerlain L'Instant Extreme
Montale Red vetiver
Creed Aventus
Pure Malt/ Pure Havane
Creed GIT
Gucci PH II
Amouage Jubilation XXV
Caron Pour Un Homme
Caron 3rd Man/Guerlain Heritage/Givenchy Insense
Dior Homme/LIDG
RiVe Gauche/Paco Rabanne PH/Azzarro
Habit Rouge/New York

I think that gives some great works in most of the different styles.... maybe also a more classic cologne style (Eau Sauvage/Chanel PM etc)
I apologize if I sound like I'm on a horse or anything, but I think the notion of "must-have" is a bit childish. I'll say no more, since I understand that people like making lists. Maybe it's just the semantics I have a problem with.

5 fragrances I would recommend to someone who's a budding fragrance lover?

Something simple that they'll probably like- GIT
Something complicated but still pleasant- Jubilation XXV
Something artistic, to prove that fragrance is an art form- L'air du Desert Marocain
Something gourmand and relatable, because they can identify with food notes- Ambre Narguile
Something they may not like right away, but they'll probably appreciate after a while- Egoiste
post #47 of 78
Even though these are not my favorites. I feel any mens fragrance enthusiast should get there nose on:
1. Tobacco Vanille
2. Aventus
3. Green Irish Tweed
4. Derby
5. M7
Aventus
Dior Homme Intense
Fahrenheit
Rive Gauche
L' Instant d Guerlain Extreme
Puredistance M - Pure luxury - leather without being overwhelming. A timeless classic - and yet modern!
HdP 1725 Casanova - Fantastic modern fougere - fresh and powdery in all the right ways
Frederick Malle - Musc Ravageur - Close to a gourmand - but with enough skank that you really wouldn't want to eat it..
Cartier Sycomore - Every man needs a vetiver scent!
Armani Privé Bois d'Encens - Beautifully covers the incense genre - and you get a little pepper thrown in too.

I think that covers the main food groups ;-)

And look Mum - no Creeds! ;-)
Aventus
Rive Gauche
Green Irish Tweed
Boss Number 1
A*Men
I'd suggest, not necessarily personal favorites (though most of these 5 incidentally are), but because they have just the right balance, in my opinion, between artistic creativity and sheer technical skills, both a certain recognizable value and popularity, combined with a certain underground appeal, plus all being fragrant masterpieces just for the sake of the complexity and unmistakable beauty (at least, in my opinion again) of their notes:

Rive Gauche pour Homme
Ungaro II
Guerlain Mouchoir de Monsieur
Caron pour un Homme
Aramis Tuscany
Aventus
Tobacco Vanille
Bleecker street
Chergui
GIT

Honorable mentions: Pure Malt, Original Santal, New Haarlem, Burberry London, Musc Ravageur, Millesime Imperiale, and Silver Mountain Water.

Agree its not likely to have a must have because taste varies too much; so my list is kind of a must sample at least (if they are available)
And I cannot believe there isn't a John Varvatos in there. LOL.

Terre d'Hermes
Dunhill Special Edition (evening and formal)
L'Eau d'Issey Pour Homme
YSL Jazz (i like this for cool to cold weather)
Drakkar Noir
Wild Card: John Varvatos Vintage

and instead of using AXE, one should really try Mark and Spencers' Wood Spice body spray.
