Basenotes featured in November issue of Men's Journal

Can't find the story online yet, can't share a link, but there's a fairly long feature about men's fragrance as a hobby, with lots of mentions of BN, in the November 2012 issue of Men's Journal.

Don't bother buying this magazine, but if you're in a long grocery store line and it's by the check-out, you might skim it for amusement, and then put it back on the shelf.

And no, Le Labo Rose 31 does not smell like you-know-what.

Thank you for this! It's nice to know fragrance can have some connoisseurship that is accepted, just like food and wine.

Thanks for the heads up.

Thanks for letting us know. Definitely going to check out the article.

Not the most flattering or interesting of articles, I think the author may be slightly nuts, but still was a bit surprised over lunch to see this article in the mag and then see basenotes actually mentioned specifically.

Can't hurt at all, though, to further the interest in perfumes!

By the way, if you do pick up the print copy, it's in the latter 1/4th of the magazine.

I really like info like this - so thanks for posting!

I also thought how you recommended that we don't buy it! Is it that good a magazine? LOL

Men's Journal - generally, a poor-quality magazine. It's ok if you want to look at lots of ads. Not so hot if you're looking for something decent to read. The story about fragrance hobby - not so flattering, as noted above, but the author's POV is fairly comedic and self-deprecating. Basenoters shouldn't be too offended.

And we all know how it can go, with anything that acquires a reputation of connoisseurship.

Just read the article today, it's a few pages long but it tries to cover the basics, and I think it does a good job (pantydroppers, pride of collections, what others think of the hobby, signature scent, etc.)

Can't wait to read it. Thanks.

I just read this today and thought the article was hilarious. I actually thought he did a nice job of explaining a quick descent into basenotes addiction. The "pantydropper" stuff made me laugh. He actually seemed to be complimenting the sites non-snobbery and even mentioned some posters by name.

Just went and picked up the issue and grabbed a beer to check out the article. Actually Erik and I met up in Hollywood when he was in town to interview Clooney. We had brunch on Men's Journal and talked frags, as he was in the middle of doing research for the article, going off the deep end ordering bottles. He might have been exaggerating the drama he went through with his collection and girlfriend, but maybe not. He seemed to genuinely want to distance himself from the hobby a bit last time I talked to him. It makes me chuckle now. If my memory serves me right, I might have been the one to turn him onto Bond No 9 Harrods Oud. Regardless, he was a fun, quirky guy. Was he treating me like a specimen under the magnifying glass? Maybe that's what was going on, but we had a good time.

I enjoyed the article also.

I would like to get permission from Erik to post the article online. Anyone who knows how to get a hold of him, PM me. Thanks!
