Which do you think is best and why?

Probably has to be N.O.L.A. by Down. Unsurpassed in its epicly thick southern riffage.

Black Sabbath is the most important on that list, but Appetite is GnR's best effort by far album, it's aged well, and every track is a keeper. Van Halen 1 is VH's best album, but that wasn't really a group that was copied much, where GNR, Sabbath, and Led Zep were copied lots. Probably gotta consider Motorhead in this as well, but it's your poll.

Van Halen as a band wasn't copied much, but Eddie is arguably as influential as any rock guitarist ever. Just hearing Eruption at the start of that album both confused and inspired young ears.

I am a huge fan of Appetite, btw.

I thought that Crosby Stills and Nash debut album in 1969 was fantastic.

For me it's Appetite for Destruction. First album I ever bought and can sing along to every song. Hearing any song on that album reminds me of good times during my youth. Black Sabbath a close second.

As I was opening this thread I was prepared to defend Appetite For Destruction as my answer. WHen I saw it was a poll that had Appetite For Destruction on it I was not very surprised at all. At the time the album came out it was very different. The glam hair metal bands had hit their heyday and "metal" was a lot of rock ballads and mostly pretty generic stuff. Then Appetite For Destruction made us all go, "what the heck is this. And is the lead singer an extremely ugly girl or just a creepy looking guy?" The album was pretty irreverent, from the artwork (female flower vendor raped by the robot) to lyrics like "your daddy works in porno now that mommy's not around, she used to love her heroine but now she's underground..." What more could a rebellious teenager ask for?

Black Sabbath. Cause it sounds better.

Runner up Led Zeppelin.

Led Zeppelin is easily one of the best rock bands, but their first album wasn't as memorable as several of their others.

Appetite for Destruction was a strong debut for Guns N Roses, relatively.

If we consider The Doors rock, then I'd like to suggest their first album, The Doors.

Another vote for Appetite.

The lyrics quoted earlier (from My Michelle) is the life history of someone Axl and the band knew in LA. Michelle Young - she is thanked in the liner notes.

While Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath are much better bands, Guns and Roses had a much more powerful debut.
