How far do you travel to work?

Thread Starter
Forgive the potentially banal title of this thread, I am at a loose end and moving house tomorrow. I am moving back to Essex from London to be closer to my elderly parents, but I will still be returning to work in the capital each day. Travelling to work will now be a 120 mile round trip by train and about two and a half hours in time.

How long are other members taking to get to work?

The longest I ever had to commute for work was 50 minutes by car each way; I did that for 4.5 years. I didn't mind it so much as it gave me time to think, and I was single then so it didn't eat into my family time.

Four miles each way

Whenever I work from my home office- no distance, since my workplace equals my place.

However, I do have outcalls and one particular work-related trip took me a few hundred kilometers away from home and back.

About a mile, there and back. It's one of the reasons I took this position.

0.1 miles, I'm retired

About 5 miles so it is not very difficult for me to get there, even in this post-hurricane situation.

45 min. door to door ( 20 mins. walk + 25 minute tube journey).
Ps. You're a good son.

The same, here, waiting for the train included

About 4 miles one way (15-20 mins drive).

About 50km or 30miles one way. It's fairly brutal not just due to the number of km's but the traffic is unbearable.
18 miles ... It takes me about 20 minutes to drive, depending on traffic.

Most days my commute is 9 miles one way, and fortunately it is along a part of the I-405 freeway in West Los Angeles which does not have heavy traffic in the morning, Once every two weeks, my commute is 2475 miles (LAX to JFK).

I' m retired so I don't have to commute thank God!

I have 4.5 mile daily commute that can take from 10 to 30+ minutes.

Less than 5 miles with no traffic to speak off. 5 mins average. What a difference when I lived in Arlington VA and commute to Baltimore MD (about 50 miles) with a hellish traffic. In a good day it took me about 1.5 hrs each way, but there were times it took me over 2 hrs.

About 10 miles, which can be anywhere from 15 minutes to an hour, depending on traffic. This is my 'outer limit', I really don't ever want to go farther than that to work. My ideal commute was when I lived behind the shop so it was one doorway to work.

But you, Bartlebooth, may be adding hours to your workday, but also are getting hours with your parents, that definitely changes the calculation.

ETA: This is 1 hour each way by bus, if not driving the car. That is because of having to take one bus downtown then transfer, each leg isn't that long.

About 7 miles - a 15 minute walk followed by a 15 minute train journey
post #20 of 31
7.29 miles/9-11 minutes in my 2009 Prius, depending on traffic.
15-20 Car ride or 45-60 bus ride.
It takes me 30-40 minutes bus ride -- includes walking to and waiting at the bus stop.

Wow, that has to be tough. I'm only 19 miles from work so it takes me 20 minutes to get there and 20 minutes to get home.

I sympathize, Bartlebooth.

Currently, my commute is three minutes. But I too must move to be closer to elderly parents, who live in suburbia. I estimate my new commute will be 35 minutes or so, on a good day. And walking to work will be out of the question.

15-20 minute walk to train station
10-15 minute train journey

20 miles on the freeway.

I travel just around 25 miles - usually in the past I haven't minded the journey but recently since last Christmas the road seem to have got a lot busier. I though it was just Christmas at first but we are now in March and nothing has improved Takes a hour and 10 minutes on average to get to work.

I bicycle to work year round. It's a little over 5 miles one way and takes about 25 minutes.

20km to work by car. 20km to school by subway.
