Need a Scent For Someone Who Does Not Typically Wear Cologne

I am looking for a some suggestions for someone who typically does not wear cologne. So anything cloying, overpowering or to sweet is not a good choice.

Maybe a light yet unique scent that is versatile that you will not smell on everyone

There has to be better choices other than the mainstream stuff...Issey, Polo, Calvin Klein, Burberry, Hugo Boss, etc....but at the same time not the high end scents.

This is for a close family friend who has been out of work for sometime now and has been kind of bummed out lately and we want to get him back out in circulation and have fun.

Any Nautilus perfume, they smell like nothing at all. Well, maybe for the first 5 minutes or so and then POOOOOF, they are gone.

Also Prada Amber Pour Homme is another great one.

+1 Mugler Cologne was my first thought and I think it is a good choice. Yves Saint Laurent L'Homme would also be good, but is a sweeter. It's still light though.

In addition to Mugler cologne, you could also consider some light Eau de Colognes, such as Eau Universelle by L'Occitane (link). Another very simple but cheerful cologne is Jacques Fath Green Water. Even to a non-perfume-wearer, it would be within their comfort zone (due to the classical style) without being too cliched or overplayed. And, speaking from my own experience, spritzing it on in the morning is an instant mood enhancer!

It doesn't exactly fit all of your requirements, and I know others on this board aren't big fans of it, but when I wear Tom Ford for Men, I FEEL confident. I can't really explain it. It's not the "boldest" scent I've worn...or the classiest...but something about it just makes me feel taller, stronger, and more important.

This is actually a really good suggestion, not just because it smells great. GphII doesn't have a typical "cologne" smell, and that may be a real winner with someone who doesn't care for that sort of smell.

Also: perhaps a light gourmand?

You could try a few of the scents from L' Occitane. They have stores everywhere. A lot of their scents are not too heavy, and a few of them are more like body sprays which is good. Check out their website.

The first ones that came to my mind were Gendarme, Mugler Cologne, and Prada Infusion d'homme. Maybe even a light application of Versace's The Dreamer if tobacco isn't a turnoff. All of these are nice clean scents that are easy to wear. (although it's best to let Dreamer drydown a bit as the opening can be a bit much).

Yes they have a lot of inoffensive sort of scents, of all kinds of types.

Maybe one of the men's sampler sets from the Perfumed Court would be fun and open his eyes to what is out there other than the blue/aqua/sports genre crap that you smell everywhere.

I tried Mugler cologne and there is something to overly floral and synthetic, It gave me a headache.

Gucci PH II, Monsieur de Givenchy, might be a worth a try and Molecule 01 but pricey. Thanks for the suggestions.

Dior Dune is a light happy clean scent.

Gucci Pour Homme II is a subtle fresh and spicy fragrance.

Mugler Cologne if he wants to smell like soap.

Don't forget Gendarme. D&G The One is also quite nice, and won't offend anyone. But it's pretty popular, so if you live in a big city chances are it's not all that unique.

Voyage is definitely one
GPH II also meets your criteria (try it first though, the tea note is a real turn off for some)
L'Homme may work as well (try first, it may be strong by your standards)

Whatever you buy, please don't make it Mugler Cologne...this stuff is fresh, yes, but it's a nuclear blast of howling, blinding freshness. It seems like about 50% of Basenoters think it's light and short lived, and half, like me, realize that it's Creed Original Vetiver with 'riod rage.

I'll agree on Gucci PH II, Gendarme, and I'll add L'Eau par Kenzo.

Def. try Rocky Mountain Wood by Dsquared. Probably won't come off as synthetic etc, very natural in the way the name of it suggests (thank god for good honest marketing for once), yet sorta intriguing and a bit peppery etc.
Haven't tried the regular one "(He) Wood"

EDIT: (confused threads here, but above one def. fits in here I think)
