Twinkies...no longer? Hostess shutting down.

Looks like Hostess will be shutting down production of their products due to a fall out from a strike...which included lay-offs of more than 18,000 people. People joke but it's a pretty big shut down. Never thought I'd hear of Hostess being shut down..that's pretty huge! I read Wonder Bread and Ding Dongs may still be sold though? Could have read that wrong. Not sure of what else.

My personal fave? Zingers..just too good! No more Zingers? I heard Hostess products are flying off the shelves..I may have to stock up on those Zingers and maybe a Sno-Ball or two. No donettes? Pies? Perhaps things will be made by another company..but it won't be Hostess! Hostess is much better than that Little Debbie!

Best Hostess product, IMO, are their chocolate donuts. Yes, they are terrible for you (as most of their products are), but nobody makes them like Hostess. The chocolate actually TASTES like chocolate. Not so for other makers.

Won't be missing Twinkies at all.

I could never stand Twinkies, not even as a kid...when other kids brought Twinkies to school for snack, I had a hard boiled egg! And see, I don't like vanilla perfumes either!

I did like Snoballs, though...but only the marshmallow/coconut part. I used to peel it off and eat it by itself.

I'm sorry for the ones who will be losing their jobs.

Farewell, Twinkie defense!!
I feel very sorry for the folks losing their jobs, though.
When I was a kid my aunt and uncle had a corner variety store and I recall going with my aunt to the Hostess distributor to pick up product for their shelves. I was thrilled at the site of all those packages of sugary treats. Like 30Roses, twinkies were not my fave but I ate more than my fair share of snoballs- also separating the coating from the cake and eating the coating first, then the cake. It was a ritual- like some people and oreos.
In high school, preference switched to SusyQ's, and in my early 20's the chosen treat was Ding Dongs.
I admit I still glance longingly at the rack occasionally.

Eh...someone will come along and buy them. A co-worker read online that Pepsi (of all companies) was rumored to be interested.

Tough to lose your job in this economy. Hostess, Drakes.. Twinkies were never up there as my favorite....does anyone remember Ring Dings and the Drakes Raisin Cakes? I used to enjoy those back in the day.

I guess on Ebay Twinkies are going for over 25 dollars a box. 4 boxes going for over $70 bucks as a lot. 5 boxes for over 100 bucks?? Whoa. People like their Twinkies I guess!

Incredible the way jobs are being lost. The economy is falling, or has fallen, apart. So many changes in so short a time span. I feel so concerned for the future generations who will suffer even more. Fewer jobs, no benefits. Scary.

Don't be too concerned, the kids are making $25+ for a box of Twinkies, tax free.

Twinkies are still produced in Canada by Saputo Incorporated's Vachon Inc. (bakery in Montreal) which owns the Canadian rights for the product from Hostess and not affected by the actions state side. So I guess, if you want Twinkies, gotta go North.

Let those canadians get obese now. A single Twinkie contains 2.5 grams of saturated fat, representing 13% of the recommended daily intake of saturated fat based on a 2,000 calorie diet. It is 42% sugars, 21% complex carbohydrates and 11% fat by weight, so maybe it is good for our health that they are gone.

Another reason to like Canada! Vachon? I think they make those Ah Caramels?. Canadians have some good snacks too.

Has anyone tried Little Debbie Cloud Cakes? They look like Twinkies. Do they taste like Twinkies?

My daughter is moaning about all the Twinkies she could have been eating all these years, LOL.

White Trash Taste-Off? Too funny.

OK, it is semi-embarrassing to admit, but I have tried the Cloud Cakes. They are a pretty good imitation, IMO. They do not leave that film of grease on your fingers that Twinkies do though, so if that is important to you, you will be disappointed.

No more SnoBalls??

Tastycake still kicks Hostess' butt though.

I'm sorry for all the job loss. That's the real tragedy here...

Walmart bakery section has Sno-ball clones called Fast Balls, individually wrapped in a box of 12. They taste pretty much the same.

Even the Cloud Cakes were sold out today. I did, however, buy my turkey.

There are store brands that have similar products. Little Debbie's stuff stinks, imo. Can't stand Little Debbie. Haven't tried their Hostess-like products but their other ones..awful, lol.

Few people realize that it is not the strike that caused the downfall of the company--it filed for bankruptcy over a year ago. The company has been walking on eggshells for a while, as bankruptcy can take years to manage. Obviously what happened didn't help at all, but I'm surprised Hostess lasted as long as it did.

On a lighter note, I was one of the few fans of the strawberry pies as a kid. They were basically dough filled with jam.

The company didn't adapt to the trend of healthier, more wholesome foods and kept pushing the saturated grease, preservative filled and refined sugar products down our collective throats, that's the reason.
Actually I am glad it happened so kids will not continue being poisoned with that garbage.

I believe some other company is likely to step in and buy the brand and/or Company.

So true! I forgot to mention this part. Wonder white bread (which was made by Hostess) is horrible, and enriching it with vitamins and minerals hardly did anything. I really didn't know any kids lately who had a hankering for Hostess cakes, but we don't really have them sold here other than in gas stations mostly.
