How appropriate would Italian Cypress be for a young man?

I always hear that IC is kind of an old man fragrance, but the notes sound appealing to me. I know a lot of you say that fragrance has no age, but I think that fragrances can make people feel older/younger/etc., and a lot of non-fragrance lovers build opinions of age appropriateness.

Thoughts? Should I get a sample?

EDIT: I realize I now spelled it wrong in the title .

...and I am one of those that feel that way.

As for getting a sample, only you can determine that. I did not like it much and don't particularly recommend it for anyone... You of course may feel differently.

Unfortunately, this is one of my least favorite fragrances. So I agree with previous posters to sample first so you can determine if it is for you.

Please sample first.. It's going to be a love hate thing. I don't personally enjoy it.

Would Timbuktu be a better choice to sample in the same general genre?

All members are right about sampling it first and as far as any frag your interested in I would sample before wasting money on something you might not like. Sampl, sample and sample some more!

Definitely sample. I love this one, even though I don't own it. (It's one of my favorite Tom Fords.)

My *personal* opinion is that this is a lot like Ralph Lauren Polo (green bottle), only younger and more modern. But it's still kind of old school classy, so think about when you would wear it.

I think a young guy can pull this off no problem - especially with great clothes.

I agree that the overall scent of IC is very similar to Polo green, except a little better.

Yes, get a sample of IC and see what you think. And if you like it, get a sample of Norne, by Slumberhouse. All three of these are similar after the dry down, but Norne is probably my favorite. Very coniferous.

Have you ever smelled Halston Z-14? B/c that is the fragrance Tom Ford ripped off when he made Italian Cypress. I'd say they are about 90% alike. Z-14 has a heavy synthetic lemon Pledge smell in the opening that is missing in IC. Other than that, they are twins separated at birth, Z-14 being the least loved son given away and adopted by peasant villagers, while Italian Cypress was the favored son who was destined & groomed to be king.

Now, on to your question about it being appropriate for a young man: Personally I don't think so. It's a very mature scent (I'll go against the grain here and say that I believe some frags are indeed a bit...mature or dated for a younger person, with IC being one of them). It smells like an 80's powerhouse and those tend to be revered by older gents, and hated by young'ns. I'm in my late 20's and I rock 80's powerhouses with no hesitation. I like Italian Cypress, but I can't see it being a compliment getter or something that would make young ladies weak in the knees...if that is a consideration of yours. It is a very well made fragrance, but it's a polarizing one as all Tom Fords tend to be. I own Timbuktu as well and it's an odd scent. It smells like the incense section of a natural health food store. I never really wear it but I think it smells nice. I'd sample both if I were you.

I personally get no resemblance between the two (at least not the vintage juice that I own). Halston Z-14 is light years better, IMO. I also, for what its worth, do not get the comparisons to original Polo either (another vastly superior fragrance, IMO). Now Norne, *that* I can see compared at least to the spirit of the original Polo (and it is excellent).

These two smell entirely different, so you really need to sample them both... Timbuktu is not one of my favorites, but it is certainly a very good composition and I strongly prefer it of the two.

You can fix that by clicking on Go Advanced in your original post-- there is a box to edit the title.

I like Italian Cypress too, by the way, and I don't think it smells too old.
