Leather scents seem to be enjoying a bit of a sudden renaissance these days with recent years having seen scores of exciting new releases, rereleases and, not least, renewed interest in the fabled classics of this very old and distingished fragrance category. But which one is your favorite leather interpretation?
I enjoy a lot of the fragrances on the list (and certainly classics like Knize Ten and Cuir de Russie), but having to pick my favorite at the moment I'd go for a much newer one; my vote goes to Dior's dirty civet-heavy Leather Oud. Which one(s) do you enjoy or admire the most? It might not even be on the list...

From the list, my personal favorite are:

Guerlain Derby
Puredistance M
Dior Leather Oud
Knize Knize Ten
Chanel Cuir de Russie

another newly favorite leather scent is Naomi Goodsir Cuir Velours

Chanel - Cuir de Russie

L'Artisan Parfumeur - Dzing!

Santa Maria Novella - Peau d'Espagne

My favorites are:

Tuscan Leather - For its realistic take on leather.
Leather Oud - For its take on a smooth smoky saddle leather.

Aoud Cuir d'Arabie
Cuir Ottoman

Adding a favorite of mine that's not listed - PG's Cuir d'Iris.

I don't really have much leather experience, but so far I think I like Nostalgia best with Leaether Oud a close second.

Haven't sniffed all on the list, but Creed Royal English Leather is the one I picked. It's just great stuff.
Creed Cuir de Russie, Knize 10, Farina Kölnisch Juchten.
Tuscan Leather
M
Leather Oud
Derby

Very tough to choose. Glad I can have more than one.
Derby
Royal English Leather
I prefer old fashioned, sweet, ambery leathers. Creed Royal English Leather is probably my favorite, but others are Chanel Cuir de Russie, Knize 10 and 10 Golden Edition.

Cuir Ottoman

Favourite - 17/17 Homme.

Highly rate - Cuir Mauresque, Cuir de Russie, Derby, Royal English Leather, Tuscan Leather.
From this list, Knize Ten, closely followed Creed REL and Aramis, still having to test Tuscan Leather and Cuiron.
My top 5 leather:-

Helmut Lang Cuiron
Tom Ford Tuscan Leather
Chanel Cuir de Russieb
Creed Royal English Leather
Heeley Cuir Pleine Fleur

I have trouble classifying Puredistance M as a leather fragrance. It's much more complex than that.

Give it a try to Bel Ami by Hermes.

My favorite is Cuiron, with honorable mentions to Cuir Pleine Fleur and Puredistance M.
Miller Harris Cuir D'Oranger
Knize Ten gets my vote, although I find it too strong for me to wear. It's an authentic leather though and that's why I chose it.

Why isn't Chanel Antaeus in this list? Or Fahrenheit even?

Thanks for those questions. I left Antaeus out because I try to put just one fragrance per house in these polls and Chanel is represented by Cuir de Russie instead. Same goes for Dior with Leather Oud over Fahrenheit. With one poll slot reserved for the "others" option there is only room for a maximum of 19 entrants, so for the sake of variation I try to enter as many houses as fragrances...

On a side note, I think I'd probably classify Fahrenheit as more of a gasoline/petrol scent than a leather, and certainly compared to Leather Oud...

Ah thanks for clarifying this so promptly. I see what you mean. Actually, I think Leather Oud is probably Dior's best offering out of any of the mainstream (masculine) scents they've done. I like J'adore, but that's a different story altogether!

I still stand by my vote for Knize Ten.

with the exception of Tuscan Leather and Cuir Amethyste, I love all the others with Puredistance M, Knize Ten, Bandit, Derby and Chanel's Cuir De Russie forming my top five (in no prticular order).

Puredistance - M

Tom Ford - Tuscan Leather

Cuir Ottoman

Tom Ford - Tuscan Leather

Cuir Ottoman

Tuscan Leather for me. I just received another 4 mil sample of it yesterday. Great stuff
post #28 of 49
I have only tried 5 - 6 of that list, but I love Chanel's current EDT of Cuir de Russie (leather, iris and other interests) and also Heeley's Cuir Pleine Fleur, for it's dry, austere take on soft leather and florals.
...my favorites from this list: Dzing! and Knize Ten...!
...other: Habit Rouge and Or Black...!
My favs are:

Cuir de Russie (Chanel)
Knize Ten
Gomma
Tabac Blond
Puredistance M
Lonestar Memories
Cuir de Lancôme
Diorling
Arsène Lupin Dandy
Bandit
Tough choice. I ultimately went with Bandit, but Rien is up there. And so are many others.

For the ultimate in leathery-ness, you should smell (but not wear) that realistic impression of drowing into a tannery pool, Complex by Boadicea.

+ 2 Im really for Helmut Lang Curion as an overall leather scent. Not an easy one to come across, either.

I have to admit that I have not sampled many on the list but of those listed I voted for Leather Oud. One not listed that is my top favorite is Parfums Regence Kolnisch Juchten. Dark and deep Russian Leather. Smells a bit like a campfire and a bit meaty to start.
Tuscan Leather is by far the most amazing smelling leather based fragrance ever made!!
I haven't smelled them all but my favorites are Cuiron, M, and Dior Homme Cologne.

I also really like Poivre Samarcande, which to my nose smells more than leather than anything. I guess because it's so peppery people always talk about the pepper instead of the leather.

Thank you, everybody! It seems clear by now that three fragrances - Tuscan Leather, Knize Ten, and Cuir de Russie - score much higher than the others, but it's still a pretty close race between those three contenders. Leather Oud and Derby follow suit at a much slower pace in 4th and 5th position. It's been very interesting to follow the voting, and the poll has yielded some surprises, as well: Only one vote for Peau d'Espagne and three for Cuir Mauresque place them both at the very bottom. I for one hadn't seen that coming - very interesting!
Thanks, guys - and please go on voting. The poll stays open.

Farina Kölnisch Juchten, Chanel Cuir de Russie Parfum, Creed Cuir de Russie, Cuir de Lancome
post #42 of 49
Of the ones I have tried:

Rien - stands out as amazing

Bel Ami and Tuscan Leather are also good fragrances
post #43 of 49
Royal English Leather, Knize Ten and Helmut Lang for me, and in that order.
Knize Ten
Dior Oud Leather
Oud Cuir d'Arabie
Cuir d'Iris
I have a hard time enjoying leather fragrance. But I like leather as an ingredient in a more complicated perfume. My favorite of these "mostly leathers" are: (1) Leather Oud, (2) Or Black, (3)Kolnisch Juchten (Regence), (4) M PureD

Soft suede scents that have a leather suede note, are "almost leather" but probably not really leather scents, these are my favorites: (1) Nuit de Sens by Louis Feraud, (2) Soivohle Leather Krem, (3) MFK Oud, (4) Dzongkha

im going to throw one more hat into the ring- its pinaud clubman special reserve. seems like ive been tooting its horn a lot here lately. it is the best leather ive smelled yet. including bel ami and knize ten- hear me out... clubman special reserve is leather. all the others are leather and sweet or leather and rose or leather and smoke and cinnamon, or whatever. pinaud is leather. period. and it smells really really nice. thats my vote.
Royal English Leather

Eau Sauvage Fraicheur Cuir - not the most evocative of leather, but nice.

Axe Music could be a Tuscan Leather flanker, theyre that similar.
I tried Tom Ford Tuscan Leather yesterday, for a full wearing, and found it to be nothing but fruit in the last hours.

Nostalgia by Santa Maria Novella, it reminds me of my late Uncle's 1967 Jaguar XJE, parked in the garage with the leather seats and gasoline fumes and oil soaked floors...Attachment 17896
