New to Basenotes, Gourmands for Winter, and Layering.

Hi, everyone! I'm new to Basenotes. Just registered about an hour ago, so this is my first ever post.

Yesterday I received in the mail some gourmand scents that I'm looking at getting for the upcoming winter season:

Givenchy Play Intense
Givenchy Very Irresistible
Animale Animale
Rochas Man
Angel Men

The closest I have to anything gourmand or good for winter is either Armani Code (which I see as more of cold weather, indoor fragrance) or Burberry London. So I'm looking for something a bit different, something with chocolate and coffee, maybe with a bit of vanilla. A warm mocha/espresso vibe for a night in with the lady would be nice.

Anyway, back to my samples...

I'd heard good things about Play Intense, but I can barely smell it on my skin, so I can't really tell if I like it or not.
Very Irresistible is my least favorite of the bunch. I hate the opening and I don't get any of the hazelnut people always talk about. I really don't like it at all.
Animale Animale does smell a bit like Angel Men, like I'd heard it would. But it's fruitier. There must be a citrus note (pineapple, I think) in there that somewhat ruins it for me. Makes it smell just... Very strange.

My favorite of the bunch are Rochas Man and Angel Men (which I know will probably get some hate for the tar note). I'm sure we all know what these smell like already. The tar note in Angel Men was slightly off putting at first, but it quickly settled down and I knew it was something I could definitely get past. Rochas Man is just exquisite.

Anyway, my question is... Of my two favorites, Angel Men and Rochas Man, which should I get and why? Or should I get one of the others I sampled? And why should I get that one instead? What are your opinions on the scents I chose to sample? Should I get something completely different altogether?

Finally... I am wearing both Rochas Man and Angel Men as we speak. I actually layered them one on top of the other and now I smell absolutely divine. Would anyone recommend doing this out in the real world? Why or why not? What are your two cents?

Sorry for such a long post and for asking so many questions! I'm just really excited to be here! Really looking forward to everyone's responses!

Of the two - A*Men although can't go wrong with either IMO.

+1

and there are other excellent gourmands besides those 5.

I am a fan of both, but A-Men would be my winter choice gourmand from your list because it's strength and allspice notes are more appropriate to the winter cold.
I would have never thought to have mixed Rochas Man and A-Men, but I never tried. If you like it, then I say try it again and see how you feel and then wear it out. Wear what you like is my motto!

Of the two, A*men would be my choice as I believe it is a better crafted scent and more complex than Rochas Man. Angel Man is very unique with its tar like opening and beautiful dry down. I have been using it for many years. However, if you want to save a few dollars, go for the Rochas Man. It is sweet and will lost a good time. You really can't go wrong with either.

Since when is pineapple part of the citrus family?

In before someone suggests you forgot those and buy LIDGE instead.

Like what others have said, you can't go wrong either way. Personally, I'd pick A*Men / Angel Men as it is more masculine and more unique than Rochas. I once wore Rochas, and a lady friend next to me got complimented for smelling good.

A*Men is solid in terms of longevity and projection. All you need is a spray or two and you're set. While Rochas has an advantage on price, in the long run, A*Men will outlast Rochas in your wardrobe since you only need a couple of sprays of it per wearing.

By the way, WELCOME TO BASENOTES!

Darjeeling...

Sorry. You're right. Although I could have sworn pineapples had citric acid in them. I thought that was what made them "tangy." Oh, well. There's just something in Animale Animale that makes it smell a bit "off" to me.

Thank you to everyone else who is posting. I feel quite welcome here

A*Men from your list..else get LIDGE

A*Men is easily my favorite from those listed. Also, I personally have never layered any scents. I don't think it usually benefits either scent. I want to enjoy the composition that I initially purchased. Just an opinion.

I usually don't layer either. Actually, I never have before. I just like both Rochas and A*Men so much. I figured taking my two favorites and putting them together could only be good. And it was. I llayered Angel Men with Very Irresisitible as well to see if I would like VI better that way. I did. I got a the minty chocolate I was supposed to get with VI alone, but didn't.

In principle, though, I'm not too into layering. It was just an experiment. And Angel Men can easily stand alone.

Maybe the Pure Havane flanker.
Forget all of those - get Dior Homme Intense! A lovely vanilla/cocoa drydown

LIDGE is ok, but I find the citrus grates against the cocoa.

Pure Havane is one of my favorite cold weather fragrances.

A*men is a classic but it' still very unique. Of the two, That is the one I would go with. Three others come to mind that I enjoy a little bit more...LIDGE, Ambre Narguille, and New Harlem.

Angel Men.
It's a much better scent in my opinion. Longevity and projection are much better than that of Rochas. The scent smells nicer overall.
