Chanel Dominance

Anyhow, since I've sort of developed my sense of smelling with regards to fragrances over the last couple years, today I went on a fragrance smelling spree. I have over 100 strips of various houses and fragrances from Neiman Marcus, Macy's, Nordstrom, and Saphora. There was a great variety of Creeds, Tom Ford's, Gucci, YSL, Dior(a couple), Versace, and then of course Chanel

Me personally, I've never spent too much time smelling Chanel before. I don't know why. For the first time, I smelled Egoiste and Antaeus
My god, out of the 100+ fragrances I ended up smelling initially and the dry down later with my dad, those two made my top 5 of which me and my dad both agreed belonged there. Bleu De Chanel and Allure Homme Sport were also held in high regard and made the top ten easily and could have made the top 5 as well.

Tobacco Vanille, Black Orchid, and Dior Homme made up the other 3.

The other surprising ones that me and my dad both liked and I had smelled before but not with the nose that I possess today: Spicebomb and 1 million..Yes 1 million. In fact, my dad said it was his second favorite and he's 64 years old

However, my dad didn't get chance to smell Millesime Imperiale by Creed but to me that and Tobacco Vanille stole the night. I've smelled MI before as well as TV but with my more trained nose they smell completely different and are absolutely invigorating
However, TV can become cloying from the tonka bean and some girl at Macy's said eww that guys fragrance is pungent- said a hot 30 year old
of which I responded: this "ewww" fragrance costs more than your whole wardrobe bi*tch...Ok, so I didn't say that but I wanted to. But "I respect that"-AL

Anyhow, am I the only one that agrees that the Chanel house is purely timeless.

I'm addicted to Chanel. Most of my collection are Chanels.
You should check out Les Exclusifs and you'll be blown away...

In the past I've bashed Chanel quite a bit. I think Bleu and the Allures are pathetic attempts at fragrances from this house. Until yesterday, I'd only ever owned Sycomore from the exclusives range and had used Antaeus in the past which to my nose is OK (although I really like that beeswax note).

But yesterday, I did pick up a large bottle of Egoiste. After getting a very good sample from another Basenoter, I was completely stunned by that Rose opening and Sandalwood dry-down. Totally class in a bottle. That said, I wouldn't call it dominance but they definitely have some gems out there if you know where to look!

The house has a ton of fans on BN and everywhere actually. I confess most of their scents have not clicked with me but I am definitely in the minority. Still, even I like Sycomore, Antaeus and Pour Monsieur, so even folks like me who somewhat dislike the house style on the whole have some gems to enjoy from it. I think my main issue with Chanel is all their Allure line and later releases in particular.

I think Chanel and YSL are tied for the most popular house apart from Creed and Tom Ford which are a little higher class and pertain to a select few. Both houses just have quality fragrances. Nothing that was just forced onto the market to sell and accrue profit but for people to enjoy.

Idk why but I find AHS very refreshing. It has that lemony-zest smell that is really nice.
Although, I think Egoiste and Antaeus are class as well. Bleu de Chanel i'm iffy on. Sometimes I like it, sometimes I dislike it. But, I never hate it. Again, I don't really see a specific fragrance that turns me off from Chanel much like YSL which I absolutely love.
I'll def have to check out their Les Exclusifs as everyone seems to be raving about 3 in particular

I really think that if Chanel were "dominant" you should have included more that three examples to state your point. And with only two in your top five with Bleu just outside, it seems like other houses carried enough strength to make Chanel a favorite. But dominant, no.

Well, I haven't smelled all of the fragrances in the house nor the les exclusifs, but I also based it off of BNer reviews and how there are way more positive than negative reviews on Chanel fragrances. In other houses, you will not see that. You will always see a flop here and there and then a golden one and another flop again. Chanel is just very consistent. They are unique and classy. They make those fragrances that nobody can say "I hate this I can't smell this"
I think 2 in the top 5 and one just outside is pretty damn good

I did list more than 3 in the other posts: Bleu De Chanel, Egoiste, AHS, and Antaeus
They could have all easily been in the top 5. That's 4/4 fragrances from one house. No other house compared to this level. Maybe YSL which is another great house

Again, these are just my opinions but also based off of reviewers from BN, it is easy to say that Chanel is very dominant.

Chanel and Dior are the best designer lines IMO!

oh well, Guerlain!

I guess that, in many ways, Chanel is a fragrance house of consistent quality, with quite a few non-generic frags still on the market and quite easily available in retail- thank goodness, they didn't discontinue most of their masterpieces.

Chanel as the OP states is indeed timeless.

And don't forget they gave us the most famous ladies fragrance of all time.

Personally, it's Antaeus and Cuir De Russie for me but I wouldn't refuse a bottle of Sycomore (see sig.) or Pour Monsieur if they came my way.
