Looking for a good cologne for both court and out on the town

I'm pretty new to the world of colognes, but am looking for something that might work as a signature scent. I have Perry Ellis Reserve (which is kind of my default cologne and I do get compliments on it), but am looking for something better or more unique than what you would normally find at a Macys. The only restriction is that I'm an attorney, so I want something that I can wear when I'm in court. I've ordered a sample of Aventus and would appreciate recommendations on other samples that I could order.

tom ford grey vetiver
gucci pour homme ii

both have mild/moderate projection and would not be offensive to wear at work.

Welcome!

It depends on what impression you want to convey. If you want something fresh, but still elegant and classic, I second the idea of vetivers. My favorite is Chanel Sycomore: fresh vetiver, but also a touch of smoky woods. I find it perfect for work in DC's hot summer weather. Tom Ford Grey Vetiver is excellent too.

If you need to convey a stronger and more adversarial stance, then I'd go for a leather. Leathers are elegant and classic, but very assertive. The most classic is perhaps Knize Ten. The butchest of them all are Bandit (curiously marketed to women - likely the ones who must carry leather whips in their job) and Etat Libre d'Orange Rien. Smoother, but still assertive, Etat Libre d'Orange Tom of Finland.

The following are either "safe-scents" or have moderate projection:
Gucci PH II (moderate projection, fairly safe)
Boss Bottled (Safe, my personal favorite fragrance)
Acqua Di Gio (Safe, of course)

Puredistance M. Confidence and class in a bottle. This one easily lasts 12 hours (more than triple that if sprayed on a shirt.)

I used to be a prosecutor- now I'd need Gucci Not Guilty, lol. Thanks for the suggestions- I'm definitely going to try a Vetiver, burberry london, Boss bottled and many of the recs.

So far, I love Aventus and have been wearing it non-stop since it arrived.

If you like Aventus I think you will also like Invasion Barbare, albeit at a much higher price

@suds- thanks for the tip. will try that one. So far, I think Aventus is my favorite scent- though this whole thing with different batches has me concerned. I ordered a 2nd 5ml from my original batch, but will be beyond annoyed if my bottle (once I order it) smells very different!

Chu...Unsure how duty/taxes work where you are but worth looking at official site below- Buy the sample set and then receive full reimbursement against FB purchase = 60ml samples free! I assume they will ship to wherever you are? Reports are that they are a very friendly and efficient company. I suspect IB will surpass even Aventus- It's a definite FB for me on my next purchase.
TBH I think all batches of Aventus are worthy and apparently the variations have been 'ironed-out' somewhat- however my 2012 bottle is different to and not as 'good' as the tester I tried instore.

Well, in that case Thierry Mugler Innocent.

And there's Innocent Illusion if you know your client is really guilty

It's not specifically for the courtroom- I just put on cologne every morning and most mornings I'm in court... Since I'm married, I'll take the 5th on the cute steno's!
