Looking for something different than Acqua Di Gio, college budget

Hello, newbie here. I'm a college student so not looking to drop a lot of money on a different cologne. I bought Acqua Di Gio over the summer and I'm fairly happy with it (as cliche and dogged on this place it is haha).

I find myself attracted to summer-y scents and I love aquatic/marine scents. I liked Perry Ellis Aqua, and I think it was Calvin Klein Connected smelled pretty good (almost too fruity). I also kind of like Polo Blue, but only after a few minutes after leaving Macy's and smelling it again after it sunk in a bit.

Hard for me as an amateur to try and buy at the Mall b/c they push all these different things and kept pushing summer-y scents when I asked for winter scents (and hard for me to say no since they smell good haha).

So I am looking for something that is different than Acqua Di Gio and would be a nice complement to use to mix it up a bit. Right now I have Nautica Blue but that is a little weak and I've had it since like early high school haha.

I think I kind of like Polo Blue (don't really like it after first spraying though, thought I didn't like it) but not sure if it is too similar to ADG. Same with Perry Ellis Aqua. Also seems to summer-y if that makes sense.

So any suggestions? Somewhat on a college budget too haha, so keep that in mind.

Thanks !!!

Edit: Seeing a lot of good things about Rochas man in some threads on here, googled it and the price seems right! Any thoughts? No idea what it smells like

Rochas man is a sweet gourmand fragrance that may or may not be to your liking, but a nice frag. However, for the winter you could try Burberry London, Terre D'Hermes, Yves Saint Laurent Rive Gauche Pour Homme, Guerlain Vetiver Extreme just to name a few.
Welcome to Basenotes and good luck on your scented journey!

Try some Bulgari

Rochas Man is very nice. I would also recommend Jordan Legend. You can get a 15ml bottle (kind of small, but I feel still lasts a while) for $6 on ebay. These work great in colder weather. They are both quite affordable, and are well liked. They are very similar to each other, and I don't feel it necessary to own both. Rochas is a little more floral than Legend. I like both equally the same.

My number one recommendation is YSL l'homme. It is versatile, can be worn in all seasons. It is well liked, and is a very safe buy.

Kenneth Cole Connected- I agree it is very fruity. I ended up buying this because this is what a girl picked when I brought her along with me. At first I was very disappointed with it. But it ended up being better than expected. It ended up being something I put on when I didn't know what to wear and wanted something subtle. But, there are way better choices for the money.

Nautica Voyage- I think this is a better aquatic than the ones you mentioned, and is still a great price.

For something fruity, I would recommend Ed Hardy Love and Luck or Sean John Unforgivable. They are very similar, but I think Unforgivable is a little more boozy/darker.

Another suggestion is Gucci Pour Homme II. So far from the samples I have had, I love it. It is versatile, and can be worn year around. However, it is hard to find at a decent price.

I think these are some great starters. These are ones I enjoy quite a bit, and wear often. I honestly feel that Southern's recommendations are a little more mature. If you are really liking AGD, then I feel like those suggestions may not work for you. When I first came on here, many people suggested these type of fragrances to me. I tried several of them out and was very disappointed. Out of the ones he suggested, my take is that London is very nice, but is hard to wear. Rive Gauche is also very nice, but it just feels to old. I enjoyed the smell, but felt like it did not fit me (I'm 26). TDH, smells like cedar. Thats all I got out of it. Guerlain Vetiver, smelled a sample and thought it smelled awful and dirty. These are my takes.

I used to wear Davidoff Cool Water, Bulgari Aqua Pour Homme, and Lacoste Stye In Play in college. Women likes Lacoste Style In Play.

Perhaps Boum Homme

I can add very little to the previous recommendations.

However, along the aquatic and/or strongly fresh patterns of ADG, you might also like to try Mugler Cologne, Kenzo pour Homme and L'Eau par Kenzo pour Homme, Boss Elements Aqua and RL Polo Sport.

Bellagio for Men should do the trick... and it goes for about $16.00 a 100ml bottle on Amazon if you buy it in gift set form (which gives you a large tube of aftershave balm and bath gel as well as an added bonus).

hahahaha, close enough, I am new to this!

Thanks for the suggestions everyone. I will try some of them out before I go back to school and look to purchase one. I'll have to look into YSL l'homme, Jordan, Boss, Bulgari, Lacoste and the others mentions.

Friend told me to look into Polo Black or Double Black...any thoughts on that?

I like ADG, just wish it wasn't so common. When spring comes I might try to buy another aquatic scent. I also like Nautica Voyage, forgot to mention it. Can also get that one for a pretty good price.

One question, is it generally ok to buy cologne from Amazon? I'd always buy new, but I still am a little skeptical buying online, that I will get a watered down version or something. But a lot of times the prices are a lot better.
Anyone have a bad experience?

Thanks!!

Yes look into Polo Double Black, this has become my signature scent...All around a long lasting great frag! I get many compliments on it also. Has a very unique dry down.

Hit up Fragrancenet. They always have good deals. But shipping is slow.

Versace Eau Fraiche

Nautika Voyage

Comptoir Aqua Motu

Even though it has its haters on here, as being overly common and overly marketed, look into Paco Rabanne 1 Million.
This is a very nice scent, and women dig it.
And if you have any interest in the more hardcore masculine, "powerhouse" scents, I would highly recommend VanCleef & Arpels pour homme, Bogart Pour homme, and the like. All cheapies with good longevity.
The 2 Polo scents you mentioned do not have good longevity.

Thanks guys

So fragnancenet is a good place to buy? Just don't want to get a diluted bottle?

Thinking about going to myperfumesamples .com and ordering some samples including some of the ones you guys mentioned. Then I try it a couple days on my own skin and see how I like them.

Thanks again

Nautica Voyage, Bvlgari Aqva and Davidoff Cool water. Fragnancenet is a good place to buy.

Yes, fragrancenet is a reputable seller, there is no chance that you will get a fake or watered down scent from them. I also use fragrancex. Before making your purchase make sure to search around for coupon codes, fragrancenet usually offers 20% off, fragrancex free shipping or 10% off. They also both sell samples of a lot of scents.

Someone up there recommended Bulgari and I'll second that, especially Bulgari Black, but there was another I liked, Bulgari The Soir or something that was nice, too. But I'd also recommend Polo - the classic green bottle or the Double Black as someone mentioned. The pine notes are nice in the winter and there's a little patchouli to soften the edges.

Im relatively new to fragrances, but figured I'd reply since I think we have similar tastes in colognes. I'm also fond of the fresh aquatic type colognes.

I've always been a cool water wearer until I started looking elsewhere, discovered adg next and absolutely loved it, although I now find it a little too spicy and not fresh enough. Discovered polo blue & loved it. I agree with you that the opening is a little harsh and spicy, but it drys down to a nice lie fresh, slightly spicy scent. It's still one of my go to scents currently.

Along the way o also came across double black, and that's a favourite of mine. It's not like top 3 or anything, like its not something I reach for constantly, but for me, its one of the most well rounded scents in the genre with nothing that I dislike about it, from opening through to middle to the dry down its an enjoyable fragrance to wear. It's a fragrance that I keep going back to and enjoy every time, even though others come and go as flavour of the month types. Is highly recommend double black for your tastes.

I'd also recommend Versace eau fraiche as a fresh citrusy fragrance. A bit of a lemon blast at the top, but it settles to a nice fresh (& bit powdery) scent. I'd definitely recommend u try that as well. It's similar to allure pour homme sport, I think the allure is better juice, but for the price, eau fraiche does a similar job at a fraction of the price. Versace pour homme is another fresh one you might enjoy.

Is advise against lacoste, I find their colognes to be very synthetic, and I always seem to smell a note that's harsh or out of sync with the rest. I ordered a huge sample of mainstream colognes a few months back with 3 or 4 lacostes and none of them were up to par imo.

You'd probably like some ck & Hugo boss scents. I know those houses are taboo on bn, but they specialise in making fresh, inoffensive SAFE fragrances, if that's what you're going for then ck & boss would have something for you. Although trying to select a boss fragrance is a bit like walking through a minefield, too many choices that smell very similar, very generic, but a scent anyone can pretty much wear.

As for the paco robanne 1 million suggestion, I bought it based on bn hype. It's not an everyday scent imo, its not fresh, but if you're hitting the club & want to be noticed, its great, its a unique fragrance in the sense that there's nothing else like it, but others will definitely be rocking it as well. It's a projection beast imo. However I don't think anyone in their right mind would use it as an everyday signature scent

My 2c.

While not acquatic I think D&G is in the same league and definitely a crowd pleaser
