Are there any tekkies here? Child has lost new iPod thingy

Dearest tekky peeps,

Middle small man child has already lost the brand new iPad that I sold good perfumes for, to obtain said stupidly expensive object for him for Christmas.

It was so very brand new that he hadn't yet installed any find my iPod or the like. He believes it never left the house. The last time we saw it was on a table top in the living room. Two little friend people visited and although they are known to my children very well, the said ipod has vanished mysteriously since. There were no other visitors to the house. Unless my son had removed it and forgotten entirely, which is strange as he had previously been surgically attached. Both little visitors say they didn't pick it up by accident. We have nearly stripped the house and cannot find it anywhere.

We only have the serial number and it wasn't even registered as we had only been back from family visiting for one day. Is there any way we can track it or make it make a noise remotely? My son had downloaded some free iTunes and a game or two?

It is maddening......

You don't have to install an app to use "Find my iPad". You just need to have set up iCloud and turned on the "Find my iPad" feature in settings.

If it's set up, you can just go to www.icloud.com, log in with your icloud login info, and then click on the "Find My iPhone" button. It only works while the device is on, and is only accurate to a few dozen feet or so, but it will be enough to know whether its in your house or elsewhere. You can also also have it play a sound, remotely wipe it, etc.

I've been corrected by teenagers. It's an iPod, not a pad. It is an iPod touch 4th generation apparently. I'm to get this right.

It works with the iPod Touch too, exactly the same way.

mumsy, let us know what happens.

iPods are tiny!

Find my ipod.ipad is a miracle app. I hope you find it. If (and when) you do, hopefully it will put the fear of the good lord in your child and they will never ever again let it out of their sight.

Fortunately for you it's likely at home. IF it was taken by a friend, it's only a matter of time before their mom or dad or sibling figures that out and (ideally) returns it. Either way, it's a bummer.

I have taken to taping a piece of paper to all my devices and valuables that has my name and contact info if it is ever found. So far I've not had to rely on that, but I have relied on "find my ipad" at least 6 times to find the ipad I inadvertantly set down here or there and left the store to only later realize what i'd done.

Good luck. I really hope to see a new update that you found it. (especially becayse you had to sell your frags to get it!!! -- Thats love!!! {and the reason I have not yet had children!})

You are not joking...... and very slim. I have tipped all the sofas out, the said man childs room and all his clothes are currently on the landing. I really have sympathy for the drugs squad right now. This is like looking for a needle in a haystack. The only thing I can find good about it is that at least it is making me spring clean early!!!!

I hate lost things.... they weevil away at my mind. I had to go to bed last night wearing lavender and frankincense for calm.

Man child swears it has not left the house........ that is no mean feat here. We live in an ancient house full of many crannies.....

....I hope to be back sooner rather than later....lol

I am trying the tekkie way too. Child had registered with apple iTunes for downloads, so presumably I can get them to block that serial number from any more downloads and to note if anyone tries. We shall see. He was just finding out about the GMS signal activation of the find my ipod app, but hadn't done it yet. Apparently it needs activating in the 4th generation ones but is only auto in the 5th.

This is a huge learning curve for me. I am a luddite in these matters. I am of vinyl records vintage. Funnily enough I mentioned cassettes the other day and small girl child didn't even know what that was. I had to get one and explain... lol

Remember winding your cassettes with a pencil to save battery power in the huge and heavy Grunden tape recorder? Ha, that shows my age!!!

First, hahaha @ man child. Love it.

Secondly, I'm just like you. If I misplace something I will not rest till I find it.
This one time $20,000 in cash went missing. You'd think it would be difficult to misplace that sum but it was in an envelope that I put in the trunk of my car with my kids' bags and stuff. We'd spent the weekend at my inlaws. I was sure I put it in the trunk when we left but when we got home I couldn't find the envelope anywhere. By the time we reached home and I remembered it the maid had already unloaded our stuff and unpacked. So we had to go through everything. Finally we found it one of my daughter's toy bags. The maid put it in there when she was unloading stuff from the trunk of my car.

In my defense, I am very responsible but my son was vomiting on me while I was taking him to the car so I plopped the envelope in the trunk meaning to grab it after I cleaned up the vomit. I forgot to lol.

Aaaagh.... so familiar..... My best friend and business partner long ago couldn't understand at all why her new video suddenly stopped working. Tiny child had posted his jam sandwich into the slot and it was firmly glued to the opposite side by successive videos being forced in to see what was wrong...... lol. The same child had posted all her green magnets through the floorboards in our graphics studio from our brand new grant enlarger and all our pictures had to be held down with tape after that.... You couldn't make it up could you?....

Poor man child is so distraught because he knows he has been careless and that it was expensive, so his mind is a blank about where he last saw it. To be fair on him, he hadn't taken it anywhere. The house is due to be cleaned this afternoon so I think we will both be turning everything upside down. Complete madness for a gadget.

Unfortunately after a rather steep learning curve, I find the find-my-mobile type software progs depend on two things.

a) you have to have activated the software before you lost it
b) the item has to be powered and on for it to be discoverable even if i had

Neither of these things can happen as it has been lost for over a week now. I have also apparently upset one of the mums by even suggesting her daughter may have picked it up by accident. That cannot be helped. I re-read my texts and they are not accusatory in the slightest. I only asked if she had picked it up by mistake thinking it was her own gadget.

I have registered it with itrackmobile but that is American (I think). Perhaps I should start a more local one. I will look into it.

I can probably safely say it is lost for good. There isn't a stone untouched here and my house is sparkling as a direct result. That bit is nice. I think we have a poltergeist. Perhaps I'd better leave the charger plug out next time and see if that goes too.

Note to self:- Register all current children's gadgets and phones myself from now on....

I'm sorry to hear that Mumsy. Hopefully it will still turn up at some point.

That's right - you need to activate the feature when you first set up the device. It's a good idea to test it too to make sure it works properly.
