Very interested high school student looking to start collection

Hi, I'm a 17 year old junior in high school and I have just recently got involved in cologne. I've probably spent the last two weeks, head throbbing and eyes watering, at my local Macy's testing colognes that I hope to purchase next. I've had yves saint Laurent's l'homme and la nuit de l'homme for awhile now and just recently added bleu de chanel to it and I'm in love. I want a sweeter fragrance though because I'm going to have to replace my ysl l'homme soon. I'm open to all options, but I'd prefer a cheaper designer. I'd love to own a creed fragrance but with the budget of a high schooler I can't. Out of the colognes I sampled I liked prada amber poir homme and Armani code the most. I have yet to smell paco rabannes 1 million but I am waiting for the opportunity. All responses are welcome and listened to, I thank you for your help

Welcome!

The Prada ambers are certainly very smooth and pleasant. But if you want something a little more striking, I'd suggest you try something more gourmand, that is, where the sweet notes recall more directly things like coffee, sweets and the like. For instance, Dior homme, which is a mix of iris (clean floral) and gourmand (coffee-chocolatey). Or, for an even stronger example, A*Men, both in the regular version and in the current flankers (A*Men Cuir), which is a little drier and stronger.

If you like sweet, do try 1 Million.
You'll probably like 1 Million.
From the two you listed, Armani Code is a better choice, in my opinion.
Diesel fuel for life, Paco Rabanne black xs, givenchy pi, givenchy play intense(i have a bottle available for swap if anyone is interested), boss bottled night, hugo just different, ck one shock, boss orange, armani attitude, ysl opium, d&g pour homme(dark blue box), ck euphoria and john varvatos artisian, Any of these might fit into what you are looking for...
Armani Code is super classy. 1 Million is more for clubbing/parties in my opinion. Both are good, but I prefer code. It's not as loud as 1 Million.

Reasonably priced scents you may like are Rochas Man, Animale Animale by Animale (smells like A*Men), and Boss Bottled (still an inexpensive designer scent, but it will run you more than the other two I mentioned).

Which of the Armani code line do you think is the best?
Prada Amber is nice. Have you tried the Intense version?

For something sweeter/gourmand, I'd suggest Givenchy Play Intense.
Boucheron Jaipur Homme is worth a try if you'd like something sweet, spicy, and elegant, and it's not very expensive either.
For something sweeter, I'd have to echo the Dior Homme recommendation as it smells amazing to me and is very wearable on an everyday basis (just make sure it doesn't smell like lipstick to you for the first 30 minutes, as some have that complaint). 1 million is great, but I do agree that it is more of a loud night out scent...and it's almost too sweet at first for me.

For something not-too-expensive, and a well-suited for high school / college, see if your local discounter has Lolita Lempicka Au Masculin (not to be confused with "L'Eau au Masculin" by the same designer) - it's basically a sweeter licorice-and-praline-tinged cologne and it's great for everyday wear - and it's not that commonly worn.

Also, I just tried "Armani Code Ultimate" last night and it smelled super yummy - almost like a Lolita Lempicka Au Masculin with the volume turned up, and a dose of leather. Great stuff.

Hi, I am a junior in high school and I am looking to kick start a collection. I have 100 dollars to spend for a cologne and I do not know whether I should buy 1 good designer(YSL l'homme) that I trust and would buy again. Or take a leap and blind buy 4 cheaper highly recommended scents. The 4 I am looking at are Hanae Mori HM, Aquolina's Blue Sugar,Lolita Lempickas au masculine, and Animale Animale. It's evident that I am looking for more of a gourmand scent. Are any of these bad? or do you have any other recommendations to look at? I like this route more because I save about 20 dollars and I get 6 more ounces of random juices for me to test and hopefully find a favorite. All comments are accepted and appreciated. Thank you.
Going on the cheap is always a mistake in my experience. Test fragrances till you find one you love and buy it. Life is to short for mediocre.
I'd go with your first thought - YSL l'homme
post #14 of 56
I would spend the money and get a good scent that you LOVE as oppposed getting a few that you think are good, but not excellent. I just started my fragrance journey a little over a month ago and I made the mistake of buying cheaper ones that I liked, but didn't love. Don't do that, I did and I regret it.

One that you didn't list that is pretty well-liked by most people is Boss Bottled. It is a good designer scent, but still on the cheaper side. Don't go with any other Hugo Boss fragrance though...

Also give La Nuit de L'homme a shot. L'homme didn't last more than about an hour on my skin, and even then it didn't project well at all. I tested l'homme and la nuit next to each other and every time I asked someone's opinion on what was better, 100% of the time they liked la nuit. They could actually smell it after an hour too

You could also try A*Men Pure Malt.

If you did go on the cheap side, check out animale animale by animale (yes, three "animale" total in the name). People say it shares similarities to some lots A*Men original, Pure Malt, and Pure Havane.

Good luck and welcome to the community!

Get l'homme or la nuit, and you should still be able to afford Jordan Legend.

La Nuit de L'Homme by YSL. You already know the quality of YSL, you like gourmands. Go for it.

Maybe you should take a look at this thread started yesterday :
http://www.basenotes.net/threads/321355-100-Wardrobe
I would go and try various scents if you have access to a store with a reasonable choice. Don't pay any attention to the sales staff and try as many as you want till you find one you really like, or more than one.

1 million is a good choice
Good choice. I have/had a few of the ones you mentioned (blue sugar, animale animale, HM), 1 million beats them hands down.
$100 might net you three nice bottles from FragranceNet.com

Use code DMPF2 and also get freeship over $70

I just did two mock purchases

This one came out to $94.00

Yves Saint Laurent L'Homme 2.0oz
Burberry London 1.7oz
Davidoff Cool Water 2.5oz

This one came out to $102.00

Paco Rabanne One Million (gourmand)
Burberry London (woody)
Versace Pour Homme (aquatic)

I have nuit de l'homme, chic for men, bleu de chanel, and ysl l'homme. Bleu de chanel is my daily use, but I like it more for special events and want to have more of a unique rotation.

That's a nice collection especially for being in HS. A few others I would suggest are Terre d'Hermes, Dior Homme and Hanae Mori HiM. On the cheap end I would recommend CK One Shock ~$30/6.7oz, Paco Rabanne Black XS ~40/3.4oz, and really cheap Michel Germain Tattoo which can be had for $10 for a 3.4oz bottle.

I am definetly going to buy 1 million. But the 3 you listed are too cheap not to try. And I only here great things about them. I won't have much money left over. But I should be able to buy one more of the 3 you've had/have. Which would you say you get the most compliments on?

That last post was to this^^

HM is a highly regarded fragrance around here, especially for its price. In fact, I think a lot of people would pay double what HM charges online.
I'd say neither. Go in between, 2 quality fragrances. You can get 100ml of L'Homme and 100ml of something else like A*Men for about $105-$110.
Id suggest you to try the following fragrances ...

1. Hugo boss dark blue
2. Hugo boss Energise
3. Versace pour homme...
In high school chill out with all this cologne stuff and play sports or get a girlfriend unless you can't do either

I'm looking for a cheap(under $40) sweet gourmand scents for a high school/college student. I like the sweet ginger of ysl's l'homme, and really like the sweet bubblegum of 1 million. The only problem is people recognize my scent And know what I'm wearing. I want a complimented scent that isn't very well known. But can get the compliments of 1 million. I've got some that I want to try such as aquolina's blue suger($10 amazon 1.7 oz) and hanae mori's hm($15 amazon 1.7 oz). Id even try a girls perfume, that could be pulled off by a man. Opinions? Suggestions?
Michael Jordan Legend. I believe it's $12.99 @ Ross for a big bottle.

Michael Jordan Legend
Rochas Man
You want sweet Ginger?

Mont Blanc Presence
Zegna Forte
CK Euphoria Men Intense (this one is super sweet and fruity, might be just what you are looking for).
Cuba Gold by Cuba Paris. Possibly not a massive compliment getter, but a relatively easy and inexpensive gourmand to acquire.
Rochas Man

Lolita Lempicka Au Masculin

or

Body Kouros by Yves Saint Laurent

And if your comfortable wearing female fragrances, the women's version of Lolita Lempicka is even better.

And yes, +1 to all Rochas Man suggestions.

I'd go for either of these especially Au Masculin, it's quite special with that anise.

Rochas Man is just too sweet for me, it really is like wearing candy floss.
lacoste elegance, michael jordan legend and lolita. blue sugar is intolerable. givenchy pi or irresisitable by givenchy.

Welcome to Basenotes!

There's so many, don't know where to start. Chanel Cuir de Russie is the 1st one that comes to mind, also Caron Tabac Blond. Guerlain's Sous le Vent and Vol de Nuit are great on a guy.

Any under $150 for more than 50ml?
If you use the frequent $10 off coupons from Beauty.com, you can get Eau des Baux.

Oh and +1 to Rochas Man.
Hanae Mori HM, preferably the edp. It is wonderful.
+1 Rochas Man. If you can get Eau des Baux by L'Occitane for cheap via disccount code as previously suggested, then go for it as well. Watch out also for Perfumania in-store sale, that's how I got Givenchy Play Intense for less than $40 (100ml).
