This is especially for the veterans of this hobby. Im sure it takes a long time to smell everything you want to smell. But is there anything that you havent gotten the chance to smell that is otherwise highly praised or talked about? Ive only been in this hobby for a year so i still have some sniffing to do. I buy roughly $150-$200 in samples a month and yet it seems like a still have a lifetime to sample.

this is like a well rehearsed opera. every note is in tune with each other.the 3 players are the amber/vanilla/incense mix. very intoxicating but also cloying after a few hours. I only have a 3ml...

I don't think I'm a veteran, but I did go on a pretty long sampling spree for the last couple years. I still have yet to try anything from Frederic Malle. I've only tried 3 from Amouage. A few more niche lines to peruse like Heeley and Etat Libre d’Orange (I really like Cardinal and Like This). I guess it depends on how far you want to take it. There's a ton of stuff I'd still like to try.
But I sort of reached a plateau, and I've realized a couple things.....I'm not going to find much better than my current favorites, and I can't try EVERYTHING (even though I'd like to). I did have to learn how to let things pass on by.

The holy grail (for Luca Turin) Iris gris comes to mind, as well as vintage Fougere Royale (as opposed to the current resurrection). Closer in time, the intriguing "eau de lingerie" (masculine lingerie, that is) vintage Rose Poivree. Many of the old classics remain unfortunately virgin territory for me (Diorling, Diorama, &tc)
Luckily, last year I was able to fill some of the gaps - I smelled, for instance, the also mythical (again for LT) Nombre Noir.

My goal is to try EVERYTHING. At least everything that is half decent and above. Theres no such thing as running out of fragrances to sample. I will be sampling til the day i die, lol. But thats what makes this hobby so fun to me; the new experiences and first impressions.

This thread perfectly illustrates why a hobby/addiction to fragrance is such a dangerous and beautiful thing. We are constantly chasing the dragon, sniffing, waiting, trying, hoping that the next one will be that one that rolls our eyes back and sends our senses into utter and complete Ecstasy!
Still too many to name, but I am hopeful to smell some of the more rare Guerlain's from the past. I know I will probably not like them, but it's fun to see what scents make people go all soft inside!

I totally understand spending a lot of money on samples and decants, I do it too. But don't forget you can walk into most department stores, or places like Ulta or Sephora and easily try testers for free, of some high quality mainstream scents, a lot of them discussed frequently here. Be polite and you can probably get at least a free sample offered to you or even ask for one.
Sometimes sales associates try to direct what I sample but usually if I'm friendly I can politely let them know that I have a collection, and probably know more than they do about what I'm looking for.

That's what I tell every bottle when I bring it home. I say "I think you could be the one!" But then, when I put the new bottle on the shelf with all of the others, it knows it's been lied to. What can I say? I'm polyscentorous.
I should note that I do not own D&G The One, but I've smelled it. It's not the one. Rose 31 might be the one, but I haven't smelled it yet.

yeah, D&G the one is obviously an imposter. D&G The Imposter. Does smell nice but definitely not "the one"

Sometimes sales associates try to direct what I sample but usually if I'm friendly I can politely let them know that I have a collection, and probably know more than they do about what I'm looking for.

Yes, except most people don't live near a place that sells the Dior exclusives, By Kilians, ELDO, Nasomatto, or other niche. Very true about the department store fragrances, though.

It's not :S Sorry, it might be, for you, but I'm a huge rose fan and Le Labo's effort really disappointed me.
Gentle ribbing aside, I definitely want to try Knize 10, Bond No 9 NY Oud, and Egoiste Concentree.
I also second JiveHippo and say that I want to try Derby....also I wanna try Jicky EDP.

There are an awful lot for me, but I've been very lucky with my collection at such a young age (21), as I feel I have a great one brewing here.
Definitely interesting in trying:
LDDM
A lot of the Montale line
Fou D'Absinthe (if this was cheaper, I would blind buy it)
Ciel Man
Bergamote 22 (too expensive for what it is, but I wouldn't mind at least smelling it)
Jardin d'Amalfi (been close to blind buying a split for a while, but don't want to put that kind of money on the line)
And as I said, many, many more.

Probably the ones that are either unavailable in the U.S. market, have limited distribution, or have been discontinued. I'm sure some of this is due to the whole scarcity principle----if something is harder to get, it becomes more desirable. The Thierry Mugler company employs this, smartly, it seems as their chief sales strategy.
Other companies like Chanel, have been just as wisely pulling all their products from re-sellers, making them only available through Chanel boutiques. Scarcity in branding makes a name more desirable, guaranteed.
Stuff like LIDGE, for instance. But honestly, I can't really be bothered with trying to source $150 bottles on the after market, when they likely once sold regular retail for a third of that.

So happy to see i have tried many you guys desperately want to try:-)
Black Afgano is such a simple scent, its smoky , radiating some peppers and patchouly, it reminded me of those frags i dont like Kokoricio...this is masculine patchoulii that opens up raw, strong, later it becomes nicer warmer...but its smoking! Radiating and i find it ggressive:-) so apply sparingly, its dense, quality but composition and idea did not impress, its just one patchouli, marketing is what does the trick i think:-)
31 Rose, pale rose scent with peppery note:-) nothing to die for:-) ....its not bad but too ordinary
Homage, puts things into perspective as someone said! I thought after buying it i will never buy another scent cause it must be better:-) i was wrong hehehe, the search and impulse for buying not even diamonds can stop:-)
Tribute i plan to order a sample!
But i have not tried as of yet Jicky:-) , Or Black, Knize 10, Musc Ravageur, Envy, MDCI none!, Slumberhouse, Missoni etc and many more:-)

I've been wanting to sniff Invasion Barbare but haven't. I have yet to smell anything from Amouage, only sniffed Chergui and Ambre Sultan from Serge Lutens, only sniffed Musc Ravageur from the Malle line, 2 or 3 Bonds, only Tea for Two from L'Artisan, nothing from Comme de Garcons line...and many many more that I haven't mentioned.
I HAVE ALOT OF EXPERIMENTING TO DO!!

When I sampled Black Afgano, it reminded me of sticking my head out the window while riding shot gun, staring into a pink purple and orange sunset, you know, the kind of sunset that only chemicals can paint. It was beauty humming like an engine, fleeting like the sunset, and very very intense. I did not see any marketing for this, it was offered to me by a friend.
I would like to try Tobacco Vanille, especially to see if it really is a higher quality version of Eau de Baux.

The one thing I'd really like to sample which I might possibly actually like is the O'Driu line. Good luck with that though, and even if I did like it, how would I get myself any.
Tons of highly chatted-about scents I haven't tried yet, but let's be honest, most of the Classic Faves are likely to smell like hot soapy death on me, like every other classic scent I have tried.
ETA: right, I forgot about CB I Hate Perfume. That, I've got to check out just for the name, although I have such high hopes of it I'm almost sure to be disappointed. There's supposed to be a place in Toronto that stocks some of those, though. I'm planning a trip in to spray some stuff around in another couple months, when wandering round Queen West won't be such a miserable experience.
