Something like a cathedral?

I know there is an a actual "Catherdral" - but from what I have read its certainly not what I have in mind. I am thinking in proportion - cold wet stone, some moss, very old wood, and some incense. I have and very much enjoy Craft by Adrea Maack which has to me a very moist stone scent to it, so something along those lines, but even colder and older, and with the wood and moss and incense.

Thanks!

here are some that might conjure this image...

Yosh Sombre Negra (the first formulation)
Comme Des Garcons Hinoki
Dzing (has a mouldy vibe going on IMO)
Zagorks (the coldest incense)
Avignon
Bois D'Encens

Norma Kamali Incense
Jovoy La Liturgie Des Heures
Exultat
by Maria Candida Gentile
Preludio D'Oriente
Olibanum
by Profumum

Montale Full Incense
Montale Dark Aoud has a cold medicinal incense/oud that reminds me of an old Church..Black Tourmaline Eau de Parfum by Olivier Durbano has a stone smell, maybe layering them...

It sounds as if you were describing Messe de Minuit. The current EdT still holds a lot of the 'charm' of the original.

Thanks! I'll have a look at the notes reviews for those and add to my to-try list.

Off to Selfridges tomorrow and will be trying Amouge - Memoir Man (another hunt for a woody/absinth scent) - perhaps they have a few of these others I can take a look at as well.

Try Liberty for Messe de Minuit -- Selfridges don't stock Etro

I'm going to say.... Amouage Epic Man.

Some very precious woody notes in this, the oud in the minimal amount that is in there makes this have that slight 'old' vibe to my nose. Incense? Well, you got Frankincense and Myrrh in this and they are both of very high quality, so you have your Holy Grail
post #11 of 32
It's plain myrrh (with little guaiac and tonka) and the purest I've smelled to date: Myrrh Ardente by Annick Goutal.

That. Although CdG Avignon is awfully close.
Personally, I think Avignon is all about the incense and doesn't carry enough of the connotations of cold wet stone, moss, very old wood that the OP is looking for.

Avignon
Bois D'Encens
The original Leonard Pour Homme sounds like it would do the trick.

Yes, great suggestions Alfarom.

Comme Des Garcons 2 Man (a fantastic scent with a white smoke/incense note and a lot of nice woody vetiver and mahogany pews) even does wonderful here! Apart from the Incense Series, it is great unto itself...but those are more transcendent to various places. I agree that Zagorsk is definitely cold (one can see their breath after putting this on in an isolated Church in the frozen, snowy evening). Avignon - very much a cathedral & brilliant.

Cheers,

ericrico

I agree. That's why I think Etro fits the bill and not just any "incense" scent out there. I also think Zagorsk is another close one.

Heeley's Cardinal.

Michael Storer's Monk might have som of what yu are looking for, although not really anything ike moldy, wet stones. It does have an old monestary/incense vibe going on, but I would definitely try before I buyon that one since most BNers either love it or hate it.

Alfarom nailed it. I would trust his endorsement in this regard.

Though not an incense-based scent, leathery classic Knize Ten, for some reason or another, always reminds of a cathedral, slightly smoky, sightly resinous, even slightly musty, in pleasant way.

Another vote for Messe de Minuit. Besides Liberty, you can get it at the Etro boutique. Mine is the vintage version, I've never tried the new one.

CdG- Avignon, Kyoto, or Hinoki will give you that cathedral-like incense you're probably looking for.

The agarwood in M7 reminds me of the smell of a cathedral

Amouage Epic Man and Tom Ford Amber Absolute
post #28 of 32
Avignon, Montale Full Incense and Profumum Olibanum.

+++ Zagorsk. Cold wet stone. Shudders.

Today I sampled Calling All Angels by April Aromatics. It's a perfect cathedral scent, from the intense, peppery incense to the old, dusty wood of the ancient furniture. Utterly gorgeous.

L'Air du Desert Marocain by Tauer,

Especially Amber Absolute by Tom Ford. In fact, my testing notes for this one was "Old, Stony Church." Hope this helps.

I tried Avignon and Hinoki, found Avignon wears better on me so I bought it. Its actually very close to Andrea Maack's Craft, though also different. Four purchases in the last month means I need to take a break, but I think in march I shall head out and sample a few from the examples presented here.

Thanks!
