Something smells amazing, is that you?

Have you ever been in a crowded room, be it a get-together, party, or any other social function, and received an indirect compliment about how you smell? How are you supposed to respond? Allow me to explain.

Sometimes when I meet friends or acquaintances in groups, some will make positive comments about what they smell. While most are pretty direct and say something along the lines of "Wow, what are you wearing?", I sometimes get people who ask me if I'm the source of the scent or that something smells good within our vicinity. Is it best to say basically you're wearing you're favorite scent today or just leave it a mystery?

If they ask you directly I would answer them directly, otherwise I'd just let it slide.

I learned a long time ago not to assume it's me they're talking about, but I got lucky in how I learned that lesson. A woman in my circle of friends is very into fashion and bases all purchases on price. The higher, the better. One day, a bunch of us were out having drinks and somebody did what you said in the original post: "Somebody smells amazing." The woman quickly stepped up and said "Oh, hi! That's me. It's a little something I found at a vintage shop nearby." Then somebody else stepped in and said "Uhm, no. It's HIM," pointing at me. The woman was mortified. I was just glad nobody asked what I was wearing because it was a frigging cheapie - not that I'm embarrassed by that... it's just that it would have made the woman feel even worse. Come to think of it, if I say what I was wearing that day, you'll all hate it too

I think it's fascinating how certain scents really work on certain people.

Long story short: always make sure they're talking about you before you answer the question.

let em wonder. i go out with the guys all the time and i am the only fragrance junkie.the guys know it's me but leave it to the opposite sex and your skills one on one..

Molecule 01 has truly given more compliemnts that so many other "sheeshee" boutique fragrances I've worn. It's light and long lastingm,but draws the person in (who complimented me) Hell, it's cheap if you make yourself. That's my story NOT yours.

Yeah. Depending on the crowd, some of my friends know I'm a frag nut and will say, "It's probably Grant." I've had other people sort of "claim" the scent even though I'm fairly certain they're talking about me (as I've had similar experiences to the ones above), which I don't mind, as most will usually figure it out what they're smelling sooner or later when the person wearing it walks by (be it myself of not).

I won't ever speak up and say, "Yeah, that's probably me you're smelling!" They can figure it out themselves if they ask me directly or smell it on me close up, or I can let someone else steal the credit for smelling good. No problem either way.

The funny one's for me though personally are chain reaction comments. One person will comment or ask what I'm wearing, and others will begin to say that they wanted to ask/say the same thing, but not sound weird or forward (depending on the gender).

99% of the time I'll tell people what I'm wearing though (as honestly most people really don't care once you say anything they've never heard of before, and are usually just making conversation) , as I think it's super snobbish not to, and I'd personally consider it rude to be snubbed in the matter that some so dismissively snub others.

If it comes off as a pick up though I might not say at first.

I dont know why people give such complicated answers to questions like this. It is very simple.
A girl really said, you smell fantastic.I was wearing RIVE GAUCHE.

If someone asks me upfront, I usually answer directly. Even more so, if the person seems genuinely interested about the scent. And even keeps on asking, immediately afterwards, additional infos and details about the fragrance: I also answer then, avoiding however to overload with data, while still talking (if possible) on topic and to the point.

If someone asks me directly I give them the answer, if it's a general comment I just let it go and I wait to see if anyone asks the direct question, especially if i notice another fragrance in the mix.
