Why so many men?

Thread Starter
I am just a little curious, being new here
I recently observed that the men's forum seems much more active than the women's forum
Which is opposite what I would have expected.

Is there something about basenotes that attracts men?
Just curious in case there are any thoughts on this.
Thx
Ardy

From my experience, men are more likely to join an online discussion of anything they participate.

Key words: likely - my experience.

But I think overall more women use perfume than men in the US and western Europe.

Speaking for myself, their are very few men who I am acquainted with, who share my passion for fragrances. Thus I must resort to BN in order to locate other men who take the time to discuss such topics.

yeah, i only have 1 buddy who is into cologne like me. (hey Mike) this forum is populated by people from all over the whole world. i think if it were peopled from just one town it would be pretty quiet in here!
Because wheen men are into something they can talk about it all day like sports
post #7 of 49
Why did you expect the opposite?

I think it's all the men that attract men to BN.
When I first started coming here, I wondered the same. Now I don't give it any thought.

Fragrances are part of style, image and personal care.
According to the latest studies men are more interested about their style, image and personal care than women, nowadays.
(It used to be just the opposite in the past decades)
Men are spending more minutes in a day in the front of the mirrors than women.
I think this is the key answer, combined to that what Hedonist222 wrote:

My theory is that scents have become complicated. Back awhile back your choices were limited or a vast majority picked between Polo, Drakkar, Tuscany, etc and it wasn't tough. Now, even designer wise, it's flooded. I came here in 2008 to ask about getting one new scent and am still here looking. Too many choices and more knowledge has led to less decisions

I agree...this is the reason why I get back to BN!

These. Sadly enough every woman I know isn't really passionate about anything : / Maybe Facebook or Pintrest... Where as all of my male friends have some Niche that lights their fire.

Bottom line decadence and novelty. Otherwise no interests it seems. Disappointing.

Some good answers and possible explanations here.
As for me personally, I just got interested in frags a few months ago, have no life, so here I am

Women aren't obsessed with finding the elusive magical tighty-whitey dropper.

My work requires me to sit in front of a computer all day so BN is one of those places I can goof-off....

Worldwide views from folks to voice their opinions about fragrances! Besides, women don't disagree about fragrances as much as men. Kind of weird when you think about it
post #22 of 49
Men tend to obsess about things and chase to the extreme. Its why so many men are hardcore hobbiests/enthusiasts. Fragrance is no different, though much less common. Women tend to be more well rounded so once they find a couple of perfumes they really like, they usually are done searching and look for something else. Obviously that is no true of either sex across the board but its part of the reason men tend to dominate internet chat boards in general (they want to endless discuss the minutae of whatever it is they want to talk about).

This is a very viable explanation

actually, most of the fragrance community women are in fragrantica. and there are women on there who have large collections just like men, so it's not a gender issue.

i think things just reinforce themselves, so basenotes just picked a lane and had to stick with it.

This place is like a virtual bath house...hiding behind the ananimity of the internet. Just don't tell your wife, girlfriend or anyone at work.. ;-)
I'm with the forum theory. I don't really know any females that join forums of their interest.
Because the only response I get when non fragheads see my small collection is "Wow! That's a lot of cologne! Then I get the why look." Now if it was a wine or cigar collection they were looking at then it'd be "Wow! Let's smoke it up and get wasted!"
I spend a great deal of time on the women's forum because the women are always participating in some frag activity like a sample pass . I am participating in 3 sample passes because they are fun and educational at the same time! They are also more educated and supportive in my exploration of unsex frags.

Urban Baby. I don't know if UB is only in nyc. I've only seen it in nyc. It's just like Real Housewives except that everyone went to Vassar and Skidmore and everyone pretends not to be angry.

You mean female humans, right? Surely you jest. Have a look at Fragrantica and Makeupalley's fragrance board. Plus, there are lots of women here - just not as many as there are men. I won't even start on other types of forums.

I think Noirdrakkar is right - things reinforce themselves. To his credit, Grant has created a space where men can come along and geek out on perfume. I think it's a combination of good discussion (it does happen!), internet anonymity, and increasing interest among men in personal grooming.

It clearly is the reason. We all could be on Fragrantica, where there seem to be many more women, discussing fragrances and other beauty products, but we prefer to be here, with all the other men :-p

Thx for all of the interesting and thought provoking feedback

My wife first got interested...
and so I got her some Miss Dior for Xmas
but that has me sniffing around Sephora

Ironically, my wife joined fragrantica
and suggested it to me
for some reason, it did not click for me
and I started reading basenotes more and more
without ever being aware of any gender distribution differences.

Why? I don't know
But it is a little ironic

I believe the website originally started out on google groups but regardless to were it first started its purpose was to be a place for men to discuss fragrance. I found Basenotes when doing a search for Halston 101 back in 2000. Back then it was dedictated to mens fragrance only. There was no women's or newbies or grooming or any of the other areas there are today. Those are cool but it was to point. At the time I was more of a casual visitor and it took me a few years before I created a profile. There were some regulars who would post up back then and were a good group of people. Don't know why but they all seemed to leave around 2004 to 2006 or therebouts.

My highly subjective unscientific opinion on this matter follows somewhat this man's thinking. "Obsess" is the key word.

I like how the first response completely nailed the answer, comprehensively too, and yet there are more than 30 more responses. Talk about proving a point!

The reason more men post on Basenotes is historical.
Basenotes started out as a Men's fragrance discussion board - and it was the only one most men ever came across when using search engines.
Other boards and forums were already going for women's scents. The Women's Fragrance forum was added years after the Men's one, but given the existence of the other women's boards, it never caught on the way the Men's Forum had.

Renato

I don't know whether the men make this forum interesting, but it's the best forum on perfume for sure

This may very likely be true. I turned to the Internet when my friends kind of laughed at me about my obsession.

While more interaction with female members, and with Basenotes members in general, irrespective of gender, is certainly to look forward to, to be encouraged and perfected, I am also pleasantly surprised that one can talk in a direct, unbiased, witty, knowledgeable, open and engaging manner fragrances with so many male members. Often enough on these discussion boards and sometimes in real life, offline too.

I just like to discuss my passion for fragrance with people and I find that not many of my friends and associates really care about it.

Kinda weird. Every forum i joined is dominated by men lol but then again I join things that I am interested in.
