I did some sniffing today and had two WOW experiences. Serge Lutens Ambre Sultan and Interlude Man by Amouage. As I type this, I'm wearing Ambre Sultan on my left arm and Interlude Man on my right.

Ambre Sultan is smokey yet sweet. It's almost edible and, at times, almost caramel-ish. Almost too sweet, or perhaps too syrupy, for my tastes. But the opening wows me and deeper into the drydown, it wows me again.

Interlude Man seems almost fiery to me. Yes, it's smokey, but initially, it wears as if the fire is still burning. It's more challenging yet it seems to command more of my attention - in a good way.

Obviously, Ambre Sultan is much cheaper. Interlude Man is one heck of a splurge. But if they were the same price... but...

...if you were only judging them based on factors like
- how they smell
- how they wear
- versatility, and,
- how much other people like them on you
...which would YOU choose?

Hail to the Sultan!

I'm not a fan of both but if I have to choose then it would be Ambre Sultan without any question. Interlude Man to me is very clumsily put together and for such price it's almost an insult

I own both but if you put a gun to my head I'd go with Interlude man - it's just more interesting.

BTW - you really need to try Opus VI. An excellent amber dressed in Amouage finery.

Ambre Sultan is more direct and pure. Interlude is more complex and calculated. It's like the difference between making love in a raw and uncalculated, animalic fashion, or making love in one of the crazy difficult poses from the kama sutra.

I love both styles, but in this case, I just find Interlude more attractive. It's a scent with a million little nuances woven into its folds and there is *always* something new to discover.

I like Interlude Man but love Ambre Sultan.

Not keen on either but would have to go with the Sultan.

Ambre Sultan for me

Same as Jack Hunter. If it were a choice between the two, Ambre Sultan would be mine.

I like Ambre Sultan very much. Interlude Man is one of the worst things I have smelled in the entire fragrance world. My nose just locks in on the way over-done oregano, and thats the end of that story.

No contest.

Two things:

#1 - I love a good analogy, and you really summed up the differences nicely with that one.
#2 - You also really summed up my thoughts on the differences between the two. It's almost not even fair to compare them, as they're both works of art.

I'm leaning toward Interlude Man, but I have small samples to work through first. If they were the same price, it'd be no contest for me, so maybe I've already made up my mind. Maybe...?

If you're ok with samples instead of a bottle, go with a few official samples of Interlude Man from Parfums Raffy ($6 for an official 2ml sample. You're paying the same price per ml as a full bottle, basically. A great deal!) and then a bottle of the Sultan.

Interlude is SO strong that 4 or 6ml should last a long long time!
