Having a hard time finding my way through Montale...

I´m really interested in that brand as I´m slowly discovering that I like rich, deep, warm oriental fragrances. I really loved Armanis Oud Royal, however I only get poor longevity out of it On the other hand, I disliked Kilians Pure Oud (burned rubber on my skin) and Oud Wood (smelled exactly like fir (!) on my skin, couldn´t stand it). I liked Incense Oud and Amber Oud.
Montale has so many fragrances and their website is of no help either - when I select "around the aoud", it still lists 28 fragrances. So is there a key to find my way through them? I don´t really know where to start...

It seems I like oud combined with saffron and woods as long as it´s got a warm, semi-sweet base. A few recommendations on where to start?

Too many good ones to list in their aoud line. Aoud Musk might be a place to start.

The Montale ouds have a common base, a very woody, sharp, almost cedary oud reconstruction, to which they add other notes. If you like saffron, Lime Aoud has it, and I'd say it's one of those that smell smoother and warmer, relative to the big woody punch of others.

I'd recommend reding the notes on Luckyscent. it's an easy organized way of doing it.
If you like saffron try Aoud Lime.
I highly recommend:
Black, Red, and White Aoud.
Oud Cuir d'Arabie
Attar
Dark Aoud
Incense Aoud
Aoud Roses Petals (more feminine)

From the non-oud line, try Grayland, Fougere Marine, Musk to Musk.

It's a prolific house and you may not like everything but one can't say they're not interesting.

Get a few samples and try them out. If you don't like them, there's little reason to explore the rest of the line. They are all micro variations of the same scent.

This is true. However there are a few surprise punches in the Aoud line, such as Red Aoud, that buck their own trend a bit.

I would say take JiveHippo's advice and try the following:

Black Aoud
Dark Aoud
Red Aoud
Wild Aoud
Aoud Musk
Black Musk

You'll get a rough idea of what you're playing with.

I have 4 from the House of "Aoud-Powerhouse"

1. Black Aoud
2. Aoud Cuir d'Arabie
3. Full Incense
4. Sweet Oriental Dream

In terms of longevity and projection you can't beat Montale, period!

Smell wise, Black Aoud is gorgeous and regrettably I don't find many occasions to wear Montales purely because of loudness but half-spray application could potentially solve that problem.

Sniff out the following then you'll know what the aoud line of Montale is all about. There are a lot of scents in their aoud line but they all smells similar to each other
Black Aoud
Red Aoud
Aoud Flowers

If you like saffron oud fragrances I would definitely try Montale's White Aoud. It is my favorite of his Aouds that I have tried so far and it is pretty much exactly what you described above. I second the comment about your trying Black Aoud as well since it has a nice rose opening and is my 2nd favorite Aoud of Montale's. His Aouds are so different and varying it's hard to say what you would like best. I will say that if you try his White Aoud and like it then you may also like his Red Aoud as they seem very similar to me but different enough to sample them both.

I get a feeling that he is using high quality ingredients and that he has some interesting concepts, but the compositions aren't good enough. Somehow unfinished, crude and rough around the edges. If only some really skilled perfumer would be doing what he is doing.

Aoud Cuir d'Arabie is the most interesting in my view.

Thanks for all of those recommendations. I went with samples of Moon Aoud, White Aoud, Dark Aoud, Aoud Musk and Aoud Safran. I´m really curious...
