A classic basenote and a staple ingredient in innumerable compositions, musk can also be highlighted to become a distinctive - and often controversial - headnote in its own right. Musk-centered perfumes span a large range, from squeaky-clean white musks to dark and dirty animalic ones, but which one is your personal favorite?

My own vote is split between two masterpieces of the genre: sweetish lavender-tinged Musc Ravageur and juxtaposed dirty/clean furry Muscs Koublaï Khän. I'm curious to see which musk-heavy frag you like best - maybe I didn't even list it?

NOTE: This thread contains a multiple-option poll - please disregard the previously posted thread

Not much of a musk guy. Going against the grain with a sample of Musc Ravageur on the way. We'll see what happens.

TF urban musk - well-balanced and quite unique.

Only know the N Rodriguez and the Khiel's out of these. The NR is very nice but I seem to remember that I wished it was stronger. The Khiel's is interesting and quite nice too but I'm not always sure if I find it all that wearable/contemporary.

Genuinely enjoying Acca Kappa Muschio Bianco

Musc Ravageur and Helmut Lang EdC are both in my top ten. Maybe not masterpieces, but Roucel has this ability to make deceptively simple fragrances that somehow manages to keep you satisfied. I never get tired of these.

I have been looking for a dirty sexy musk for six months and can't find it. I've tried Kiehl's, Jovan, Musc Ravageur, and TF. None have the creamy note. Some like Jovan plain stink and not in a good dirty way, but in a bad spice kind of way. Kiehls is okay, but it's too soft, too much a skin scent, and it is not dirty.

Some on the list I am not familiar with, but my favorite is Bond No. 9 New York Musk

Kiehl's original musk, Musc Bleu from Il Profumo, Musc Ravageur, and Carriere from Gendarme!

I'm not very fond of musk clean or dirty but I like Muscs Koublaï Khän

Thanks, everybody! It seems Musc Ravageur is the strongest contender in this category, followed by Original Musk and Muscs Koublaï Khän trailing behind in 3rd place. Very interesting!
Thanks for voting and for posting comments and additional suggestions - and do feel free to go on voting. The poll stays open!

Somehow I knew the results would be skewed they are skewed right now.

I personally find Musc Tonkin to be a shining gem among musc based perfumes.

I'm not voting, but think you should have included Kouros in your poll.

I like several from your list but my reference musc is still Lutens' MKK.

I have the shaving cream in this. I like the scent well enough but the lather is not up to much. I won't get it again.

I'm not a musk fan generally but I do like Cartier Essence de Must which has a generous helping but remains polite.

Thanks for your comment. I thought about including it, but I am not entirely sure I consider it a "musk-centered perfume" as such, what with all that gorgeous dirty civet, leather, patchouli and what not floating around in there, too (I'm sure there's a hearty dose of musk as well, so you're right, I guess I could have entered it on that account). It's definitely a masterpiece and a classic in the "animalic" genre, but is it really musk-centered?

Yes, Dane, I think the question you pose is a legitimate one. I probably would have included it. Just for fun.

I had to go for the titan MKK, but after looking at the results, I kind of wish I'd thrown my lot in with the neglected Commando, which smells like a man's genitals smelled through clean jockey shorts. I'm not a fan of MR by Malle at all.
