Please list what you believe are the most disappointing Montale scents due to longevity, quality, originality, scent, sillage, etc.
Thanks in advance!

Of the ones I sampled, none IMO.
All of them.

Except on the longevity and sillage part, which they excel in....unfortunately when what is projecting is unpleasant then it counts as a negative for me.
All the ones I've tried have top-notch potency and longevity. But I've never found the depth, balance and complexity I look for in compositions in a single Montale.

Fougeres Marine, smells like Tommy Hilifiger cologne on steroids.
I have four Montale and all of the are Brilliant

No complaints with anything. Smells awesome, lasts into days and projects into miles? What else would you want?

Chypre Vanille
Didn't like this one

I have 76 large bottles in my collection, and none of them are disappointing to me.
I've only sampled about 5 Montale's line and found Wild Aoud to be a disappointment.

Any chance of swapping or purchasing a decant of some of your 76 bottle collection?? Quite impressive.
Ones that intrique me that aren't on their way to me already include: Cuir d' Arabie, Full Incense, Greyland, Dark Aoud, Woods & Spices, Vetiver Sables, Wild, Sandflowers, Moon Aoud, and Black Musk.

Blue Amber excepted, I have to agree.

I do not like Black Aoud as I find it overwhelming and felt like a walking bowl of pot pourri when I sampled it. Also Red Aoud was just too sickly sweet for my taste and it just rubbed me the wrong way.
I loved BA but was too nuclear potent for me to enjoy
post #14 of 42
After you sample a hand full of their Aoud fragrances, you'll find the rest disappointing since they smell very similar to each other. Regarding their normal line, I find majority of them lacks depth and quite synthetic smelling
post #15 of 42
I had to put up my Black Aoud for swap. The rose note was overwhelming on me. Grannyville!
Not that I love all of them but of the 12 or so I've worn none disappointed me. Perhaps my expectations of Montales weren't unrealistically high to begin with.
Black Aoud. Thoroughly hyped, but not it's my bag.
You will NOT find any Montale with poor longevity or projection. They all are incredible. BUT there are some to stay away from. Boise de Aoud, Wild Aoud, Moon Aoud, Original Aoud, and an out of production one called Aoud Lime Leather. These are awful, bland, or both. Boise de Aoud smells exactly like a urinal cake deodorizer found in a public bathroom.
Wood and Spices.....Was a huge disappointment for me.
had the whole catalogue gave it away for free!

I'd recommend to give it another shot, and in colder months, as I felt the same way about it the first time I tried it. Gave me a headache and felt I was an old granny. Scrubbed hard to get off! Now I LOVE it! Great drydown too.
Obviously it appears that most of the Montale line is full of love it or hate it frags.

I feel the same about Montale scents especially Black Aoud. Everything about that fragrance just rubs me the wrong way. Check out my review on In The Nose

On the whole I am not a huge admirer of the Montale range of fragrances. I have been on the fence for many months regarding Black Aoud and finally decided that it is not for me. I also had Red Aoud in my collection for a while before it started to irritate me. Blue Amber opens well enough but drying down becomes a little too feminine. Probably, the one I like the most gets little love here, however I think it would work well in the summer and that is Santal Wood.

Greyland

Totally boring and nondescript...
It's ok but I expected Blue Amber to just completely amaze me, but it didn't do anything for me.
Not my kind of fragrances....sorry.
Loud and synthetic in my opinion.

At least half of them are disappointing but, if I had to break it down:

Virtually everything released since mid-2008, especially from the oud line
Musks
Aquatics
Many of the floral releases (syrupy sweet)

But you're missing at least 8-10 Montales...

But you're missing at least 8-10 Montales...

I was reading your montale reviews on your website a couple days back Trebor. It was very depressing and made me worried quite a bit about discovering Montale. What do you consider your favorite oud scent that is reasonably priced?

+1

Bored of way too many office/safe scents.

Everyone has different tastes...There are many of us on BN that enjoy Montale fragrances...Get a sampling from Luckyscent or PerfumedCourt and try for yourself.

I'm trying to fill in the remaining gaps little by little!

There are at least 20 decent Montales to choose from but this house has released nearly one hundred fragrances, so their impact has been greatly diluted.

I used to own Black Aoud, Aoud Lime, Aoud Queen Roses and Aoud Flowers before I grew sick and tired of oud fragrances. I also found Red Aoud too cloying but think that Royal Aoud and Attar are also worth investigating.

I only own Blue Amber and Sweet Oriental Dream now.

I just purchased DARK AOUD last night...my first Montale. This morning I am wondering if I made a mistake "it's heavy" but something kept making me sniff my sample over and over again.

Give it time, it is addicting.
Never cared for Black Aoud.
Do like Dark Aoud very much.
Full Incense is easily my favorite and Red Vetyver is the runner up. Of the rest of the roughly 30 samples I tried some were boring, and many more were just plain bad. I really don't "get" their Aouds in general. Full Incense is, to this point, the only one I would consider for a full bottle.
Way too many disappointing frags in this range. I actually like a very few of them expecially considering the huge amount of fragrances they released so far but, my prize for the worst fragrance they delivered goes to Wood and Spices. This stuff is offensive

I love these two too!

I have one sample from Montale - Cuir d'Arabie. Loathed it at first. I thought it stank. Then after months I tried it again and found myself disliking but wanting to try it every now and then. Now I love it!

I have rejected most Montale's by sniffing them at the store. I just ordered a boat load of Montale samples so I can sample over a period of time and really see if I like or dislike it. Hope I am not disappointed.

This is still their best by far, IMO.

Yes, when I first tried it I thought "Awful" like manure. but as time went on, I liked it more, and finally I bought a full bottle.
