John Varvatos - Which One?

Thread Starter
I stumbled upon the original not long ago - not sure how this ever escaped me. But I know there have been subsequent versions as well.

If I were to add one to the collection - which one?

My son turned 17 today...he wore Varvatos original as his SOTD. I'm 45 and I prefer Vintage. Artisan would be my wife's pick for me. Anniversay is a nice incense scent. StarUSA is nice but weak.

I'd recommend either John Varvatos (2004) or Vintage - those are two quite good and not too common scents.
My son used to wear the vintage formula and like it. I personally don't like any.

10th Anniversary

The original. But it doesn't stick around long enough.

10th Anniversary is by far the best one from this house.
Then comes:
Artisan Black
Vintage
Artisan
JV Original

John Varvatos original for me. I tried the other versions (Artisan & Vintage) and didn't stroked as a must buying for me.
p.s. if you like the original, I should recommend to try Etienne Aigner Black for Men. The are very similar, with the later being slight sweeter and more focused on that black leather theme. Both are favorites of mine for autumn/winter.

I own a bottle of Vintage. It's quite uncommon and many seem to like the smell, but it gives me a terrible headache so I can't wear it at all. There are about 5 others reporting the same thing in the scent's page, so I'm not the only one.

Even if you find the fragrance interesting, try to sample it before buying a full bottle.
I honestly don't care for any of the Varvatos fragrances.

@Noirdrakkar: Who care what u don't care? If u don't care why did u read this thread?!?

Vintage

+1 @ noirdrakkar
Like the packaging better than the juice...

Shoot - can't remember -- the one that smelt like a christmas cake.
I don't agree with the people who doesn't find JV fragrances to be different. They all are unique in their own way and are pretty interesting too...As a matter of fact this is one of my favorite houses....
Different people different noses different likings...so I'm not bothered about what people say about it...I never liked 1 Million but there are thousands of people who like it..so the point is that you can get an idea about a scent here on BN but you can not be sure of it until you give it try...

I'm ready to buy it! PM me if interested!!
AdG was the first scent which gave me headaches every time I wore it...gave it away to my brother :-)

A slight translation misunderstanding me thinks !

The 10th anniversary edition is a fun patchouli fest if you can find it.
My favorites are Vintage and Artisan Black. I also kind of like Star USA as well (even though its a more generic type scent). I don't care as much for Original and the original Artisan.

I agree...

To bad the juice doesn't last long on the skin!

Vintage is my favorite from the line, followed by Artisan, original, and Artisan Black.

BTW, there will be a new John Varvatos scent coming out this summer.
Vintage is definitely my pick for favorite. Artisan was pretty special too as far as the overall scent goes. Original was good, but didn't really come across as anything particularly special to me.
Vintage is also my top choice from this line.

If I were forced at gunpoint, I would pick the regular Varvatos (not the vintage). I'm really not into the artisan series. I know one of the artisans was mediocre and the other artisan was just plain awful. I forgot which of the two was the terrible one.

The regular Artisan (not Black) is actually a nice, sort of creamy orange scent. My wife really liked it when I sampled at a Perfumania. But most people think the longevity is pretty bad, so I ruled out ever buying it.
Vintage and Original. Just wished they had better longevity .

Agreed. Awesome patchouli frag.

I think it carries the best longevity of all the Varvatos. They tend to leave you wanting more but this one delivers in this department
post #31 of 39
10th Anniversary by a longshot, then Vintage.
Varvatos, Vintage, Artisan...all three are amazing. Bad lasting power, but all three are great scents.
I've gotten compliments when wearing the original. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it.
I like Artisan best followed by Artisan Black which is almost the same, just smokier. It is one of my favorite designer fragrances for men.
I actually like them all. If I had to choose it would be the Vintage because it just smells smart. The person I picture wearing this scent is a college professor or an author who is hard at work writing a novel, surrounded by leather bound books and fine cigar smoke, listening to blues music and enjoying a glass of cognac or port wine.
The 10th anniversary has intrigued me quite a bit. I might pick it up soon, it seems like it's the only JV that actually has lasting power and decent sillage.

Nordstrom has it available. Also, Amazon has one bottle in stock for a discounted price.
I feel the same way. I have samples and I never reach for them, they just seem a bit boring, safe and I dont feel challenged by wearing them.

How old are you? He just gave his opinion, it's not like he's insulting anyone for liking those fragrances. The OP asked which one, and it's perfectly reasonable to say "I don't like any of them", especially in a "recommend a fragrance" thread.
