I have a gift card for Aedes, what should I get?

Hi there. Long time lurker here with a very difficult choice to make (heh). I find myself intimidated by the sheer wealth of options at Aedes. I live in NY and have visited Aedes several times. I know this is kind of a noob question, but I don't feel like a noob, exactly (well, maybe for niche I am). Any ideas? Here is my collection after one year of raiding NYC department stores and pharmacies. It's pretty heavy on classics and Turin & Sanchez recommendations. But I'd like to branch out. I'm not by nature conservative, but you wouldn't know that from my collection, which is tailored mainly for the office and my slightly pathetic Mad Men fantasies.

Guerlain Homme, Impériale, L'Instant PH
Chanel Pour Monsieur (original)
L'Artisan Timbuktu
PdN New York
Creed Green Irish Tweed
Caron 3me Homme
Balmain Monsieur

I highly recommend
Baume du Doge Eau D`Italie
and
Aedes de Venustas L Artisan

The first thing I bought at Aedes, and one of my very first perfume purchases, was Lutens Muscs Koublai Khan. Not sure I'd recommend it as an office scent. But great nonetheless.

So much to chose from at Aedes. Since you don't have any, Lutens seems like a good starting point. Apart from the above, you could go more classic with Chergui, Borneo, Ambre Sultan or Arabie (depending on whether you like tobacco, patchouli, amber, or herbs).

More expensive still, you could go Amouage or Malle. You don't have any floral (3eme is not really a floral) - you could embrace the potent and controversial Amouage Gold man - but check first, Amouage is watering down its masterpieces, and I haven't smelled Gold man recently. In Malle, you could go modern classic with Portrait of a lady (rose backed by modern woody ambers, very radiant) or fresh with Vetiver Extraordinaire.

I agree with Cacio, your wardrobe is begging for a Lutens.

They have almost all of the export-only scents in the store, so just had over to that area & try all of them on strips and skin to decide which one you enjoy. I would definitely try Ambre Sultan my very favorite Lutens, but there are many other wonderful SL scents (Serge Noire, Gris Clair, Chergui, etc)

If I had a gift certificate for Aedes, I would go directly for the new Histoires de Parfums Edition Rare Vici, which is a beautiful spiced über-dry wood scent.

Excellent wardrobe. How about something from Frederic Malle? The only one I really like is Portrait of a Lady, but you could also do well with Carnal Flower or Geranium pour Monsieur, which gives you something floral. You could go with something oriental (which I believe troisieme homme is, but I've never smelled it), in which case you can't do better than Lutens.

Invasion Barbare, Molecule 01, Ambre Sultan, GIT, Amouage JXXV

This makes me want to go there now.

I'd get the one marketed with their own name. Great scent

I'm with the Lutens, try Fille en Aiguille. I got a bottle of it from Aedes a couple of weeks ago and love it. Either that or one of Histoire Da Parfum's offerings. Those are pretty bold and out there as well.

Another vote for Lutens' Chergui!

Get the Invasion Barbare...the rest can wait.

Does Aedes carry Invasion Barbare? I'd go with an Amouage - Jubliation XXV

No Aedes doesn't carry it, Osswald does. I imagine that if a customer asked Aedes to carry a new line or a line that they liked, they'd be escorted out if the store.

Thanks, everybody. I have tried a few of the Lutens, but, to be honest, I wasn't too bowled over. Maybe I need to spend a bit more time with them or the ones listed above.

Anyone have any suggestions for Maître Parfumeur et Gantier? How about Histoires de Parfums? Of those two houses, to start, which are must-sniffs?

In HdP, I'd say 1740 (immortelle leather) - but many others too. Their Petroleum (bilge, damp cavern) is a must sniff, but I find it unwearable.

1740 is nice. Was going to suggest Jules Verne, Petroleum, the amber one (special edition) and my favorite, newest signature scent, Cassanova

I love 1969 from HdP - since you have Third Man (my favourite Caron), you're presumably not aversed to florals.
I find it to be some glorious amalgam of Egoiste, Acteur, 3rd Man, LIDGE and Iquitos, which are some of my favourite fragrances.

It's got rose and jasmine as the major florals, some fruitiness like that in Iquitos, and the choc/patchouli like that in LIDGE (though the patch is turned way down from its dominance in LIDGE).

The opening blast is rose and fruit, then after about 90 minutes the jasmine kicks in and there's a good hour or so where you'd be forgiven for thinking you'd layered Acteur with 3rd Man.
The spices then kick in and move the rose from Acteur-esque to more of an Egoiste style, and then the whole thing dries down to get a masculine gourmand feel, with chocolate, rose and spices.

I got two compliments from coworkers this morning alone, and the longevity is damn good at 8-10 hours.

Don't buy Caron's Troisieme Homme at Lucky Scent for full price as you can get this at discounters.

I would go for something in the Histories de Parfums line, like 1740 Marquis de Sade or 1876 Mata Hari.

Another option is a luxury candle.

Gantier's Parfum d'Habit or Eau des Iles - own them & both are very good frags from Gantier house...

I cannot repeat it enough - Histoires de Parfums Edition Rare Vici. Try it.

Hm, there are a lot of good options. It depends on what you are looking for. In the world of incense (which I love having in my collection for those "want to chill out" days), you could check out Memoir Man by Amouage, which is a wormwood and incense based fragrance with a blast of pepper, or maybe Black Amber by Agonist, which is seaweed and incense (it's better than it sounds).

Outside of those options, Reflection Man is worth checking out for a floralish fragrance, as well as Chergui for a powdery, honey and tobacco fragrance.

Sample what they have, then decide.

From this list, I'd recommend GIT, Chanel Pour Monsieur Original, as well as almost any Guerlain or Caron scent.

The list is everything I own, not what's available at Aedes.
