Transferring fragrances for the first time. How to prevent mixing the fragrances?

Hi,

I bought samples off Surrender to Chance last week and my atomiser bottles are coming this week. The atomisers are coming with a funnel and one pipette to transfer the fragrances.

Now I just ordered some By Kilian samples, and I'm not sure what to do. If I transfer one fragrance from vial to atomiser with the pipette and funnel, and then washed out the pipette and funnel with water, would that be enough cleaning to prevent mixing the fragrances? Should I let the pipette dry out completely before transferring the next fragrance?

I bought 12 glass atomisers, but have something like 25 samples coming now. Should I reuse the atomisers? What's the best way to clear all the scent out of them before putting a different fragrance in?

Sorry this is pretty beginner, I just want to make sure I get it right, rather than making a big sample mixture!

Thanks in advance.

You should be able to pour the samples directly into the atomizers, thus negating the need for a pipette. As for the atomizers, some people on here wash them with warm soapy water and reuse them. Probably an ok practice, I don't think it will affect the scent too much, but atomizers are quite cheap, especially if bought in a large quantity.

Hi
Sounds like you have some good samples coming. Generally, glass pipettes and accessories can be washed, dried and reused safely. But plastic ones hold onto the oils much longer and wouldn't be safe to use quickly. IMHO this process really depends on the size of each sample. For anything less than 3-5 ml., transferring will create a waste of precious juice. I'd use the vials and dab. That's just my personal preference.

Plastic pipettes are very cheap here in the US, so I don't mix, I use a different one for each perfume (the same goes for 3ml vials). In any case, pipettes are more difficult to clean than funnels.

I want to confirm what Renaissance_Man said. Never re-use plastic accessories and atomizers.
If the samples are small, use them as they are. There is a difference in the scent development either you are dabbing or spraying but I doubt it's a crucial difference.
Keep the little atomizers, you will require them as soon as you have a bunch of bottles and want to carry a dozen little sprayers of your beloved fragrances in the weekender to feel safe when traveling. Or you'll join the swapping fun…

Okay cool. I would prefer to spray the fragrances so I can get more of an idea of what they're really like. I shall get some more funnels then, it makes life much easier.

Then I can just wash the glass atomisers out.

A last hint from my side: it's not about the container of the atomizers – it's about the spray mechanism.

I have here an 8 ml glass atomizer that was once filled with Frapin 1270. When it was empty, I left it soaking and then washed it with water and dish liquid, always draining it by spraying. I did the same with Isopropanol, several times. It still contains isopropanol and I spray from time to time. It smells clearly of 1270. This experiment is running since one and a half year.

I don't think a little sprayer is worth the risk of messing up a (pricy) fragrance you want to explore.

That's really interesting how it still smells and it's a glass atomizer.

I just bought 25 more glass atomizers and 12 metal funnels from Accessories of Fragrance (?) (can't remember if that's the correct name but it's something similar). This way there will be no reusing and absolutely no contamination with the metal funnels and plethora of atomizers.

Stick to one pipette/one atomizer per perfume. No point cheaping out on expensive scents and ending up with a potpurri mixture.

The atomizers arrived today. Fantastic seller. Accessories For Fragrances. Very quick postage, they gave me a goodie bag with a big atomizer, two smaller vials with the stick tops, a measuring cup and a couple of other bits.

Fantastic seller. I highly recommend.

This.

Just rinse the funnel and you'll be good.

...

As mentioned above the problem is not the atomizer's glass container but the sprayer (made of plastic I guess) with the little plastic pipe.

I imagine having a lovely 5 course menu in a gourmet restaurant, with exquisite wines according to each course and the waiter always pours the new wine into the same glass.

I tried this as soon as possible after I decanted M7 from the vial. I poured rubbing alcohol through it. I poured hot water, cold water, more alcohol through it and it still had quite a strong M7 smell to it.

I just threw them away.
