Vetiver suggestions please

Posted something a while back about moving to Florida and needed suggestions for some good warm weather scents.

Someone suggested that I go the route of Vetivers because they work well in the warm weather. Could you suggest some to try or look into?

Guerlain Homme L'Eau Boisee

Vetiver Frozen (also by Guerlain)


These are two that I think would work really well in the hot weather, as far as vetivers go.


For vetivers that are not specifically geared toward hot weather, consider:

Givenchy Vetyver

Encre Noir

Guerlain Vetiver (though I don't like this one...it's a classic)

Sycomore by Chanel (definitely not for hot weather, but a great vetiver scent).

My favorite is Frederic Malle Vetiver Extraordinaire. Fresh, crisp, natural, and sexy.

My go-to here for DC's warm weather are $$$ Vetiver Extraordinaire, as one said, the freshest, crispest of the lot, and $$ Chanel Sycomore, a touch more complex, with some woods. Not difficult to find, there's also Goutal Vetiver, which is greener and rootier (Goutal is sold at many Nordstroms are the like).

In mainstream, Guerlain Vetiver and the Tom Ford Grey vetiver are still going strong. Encre Noire is in the same category as Sycomore, and it's much cheaper, but I find it a touch too synthetic; but very good nonetheless.

For something reasonably priced, I'd suggest Vettiveru by Comme Des Garcons. It's in EDC strength but wears like an EDT plus it comes in either 125ml or 500ml sizes so you can apply liberally...

If you're up for a heftier price tag, IMO Vetiver Extraordinaire is unbeatable in warmer weathers.

Sycomore is always recommendable...

I agree with Cacio for Florida.

I'll add Terre d'Bois Miller Harris for a very reserved vetiver.

Living in South Florida, Vetiver is one of my favorite go to fragrances.

The ones I find that I wear the most are Creed Original Vetiver, The Different Company Sel de Vetiver, Malle Vetiver Extraodinaire, Altelier Vetiver Fatal and Guerlain Vetiver.

On a budget? You can actually do a lot worse than David Beckham Instinct (as long as you ignore the crappy celebrity endorsement) which is a good example of a spicy citrus vetiver that even Luca Turin approves of!

Oh, and a +1 for Tom Ford Grey vetiver too - head and shoulders above the Guerlain and Creed offerings IMHO.

I love Bois d'Orage but it's too thick for Florida imo, Grey Vetiver is a much lighter and fresher take.

No one has mentioned it, again, because nobody ever does: Chopard Noble Vetiver, probably not quite for summer but good in spring. Great juice, not too pricey and the bottle is outstanding. I honestly think it's better in the low-cost great-quality stakes than Encre Noire (but without the assurance of hype) simply because the Lalique is quite abstruse and difficult to wear - even if it is amazing - also the bottle is way sexier, although the Encre Noire bottle is pretty sexy all the same. Can be hard to find. Worth searching for though.

Again because nobody ever mentions it: Comptoir Sud Pacifique's L'eau Du Gouverneur although it's less a straight-up vetiver than a fragrance in which vetiver plays a hefty role.

Also you may want to look at Dior's Vetiver. As it's being discontinued you may find it at a discount, and it's a great scent (even if the usual asking price is far too much) one of my discounters has a few bottles for $150 and I think that's a great price. I plan to grab a couple of bottles myself, one to stash-and-sell and one for personal use.

Lastly before you start spending hundreds and hundreds of dollars on Vetiver scents you may be better off looking into real Vetiver. It's inexpensive by comparison and for depth and authenticity it beats any fragrance out there.

Thanks, it's one of the few CSP fragrances I take seriously, which is not to say none of the others are enjoyable. A good friend of mine ordered me some bottles off Overstock perfumes for $20 a pop, and they cost a pittance to ship because they're so light, fantastic bargain.
