Which scents gets you the most negative comments?

I will start: La Nuit.
Mostly because I am in Asia right now and a lot of people are allergic to fragrance, or so they say. So any heavy stuff will instantly make people cover their nose. And I just happened to be wearing La Nuit.

Honestly can't remember the last negative comment I received. I guess I have been lucky.

Another time I have been told about allergy was when I was wearing Allure Homme Sport.
I usually just use 3 sprays too.
Not a negative comment, but yesterday on the bus. A girl just touched her nose and moved far from me: 2 sprays of LIDG. All these happened in Asia.

My wife when I was sampling Millesime Imperial....

And this is from the same girl that loves Knize Ten on me... lol...

wth does 'I'm in Asia' even mean.
Not many so far, never from strangers.

Girlfriend disliked Fahrenheit Absolute. An ex disliked Santos Concentree, but she enjoyed Angel and Allure Homme Sport, so...

Was told Narciso Rodriguez for Him smelled like shaving cream
post #8 of 134
Perhaps people around me are too polite, only negative I can think of is being told to dial down the TV which was a fair call I oversprayed. Eitherway anything I dont get a compliment on I just take as a negative :S

My very own mother decided that Creed Green Valley smelled like antiseptic...
The worst comment I ever got was when I was wearing Mugler Cologne?

Yes, the soapy neroli juice that everyone has been raving as the non-cologney safe bet.

They said it was the worst cologne they smelled in their life and it reminded them of witch hazel and hospital bandages.

No matter what you wear, someone is going to not like it.
The worst comment I ever recd. was for B*Men
"you smell like a garbage dump" huh!....but I still like it and wear it ;-)
Never received any negative comments to this day.
Antaeus is the one that got me so many bad comments that I had to get rid of it in the end.

musk ravaguer

My wife is the only one who's ever given me negative feedback, and that was on English Fern and Azzaro Pour Homme. She says they both smell like "old man".

What does she know, anyway?
None. And I am in Asia. People dropping like flies around me don't count, right?

Dior Leather Oud.
La Nuit
My girlfriend thinks that Eau De Baux smells like 'old medicine'. She really doesn't like it.

She also said that Moschino Forever smells a bit like 'a wet dog', which I actually agree with.
Anything too leathery and/or too powerhouse, for instance Fendi Uomo, Drakkar Noir or Antaeus
post #21 of 134
I have never had this happen to me.
We should sticky this like the most complimented thread. I'm certainly going to follow this thread. Good idea!
I've been told I smell like a funeral...an old lady...and 'orange pee' when wearing Habit Rouge.
You don't tug on Superman's cape
You don't spit into the wind
You don't pull the mask off that old Lone Ranger
And you don't insult my fragrance.
^ I'd prefer to know, personally. Especially if it comes from more than one person.
Can't remember any -- I don't think I would wear anything that would provoke such a comment, i.e. Joop or Burberry Sport
post #27 of 134
None that I've known.

Lol. I've been to Singapore almost a half dozen times...and I've always found it way too hot to wear fragrances; probably because I've always been for work (at Sembawang). The Amouage in the duty free gets me on the way home though....haha

rive gauche...you smell like an old uncle!

I've got only 1 negative comment - and it was on a course from my course mate, i had accidentally put too much Salvador Dali Pour Homme right in the morning and was going to breakfast.

Which country in Asia are you visiting where they are allergic to fragrance? they have far more varieties of fragrances in the form of oils than in any other continent :/, I'm in ASIA too and I got compliments for la nuit along with any other fragrance I wear, and in Asia, specially around middle east they go with loud fragrances that would cause headaches for westerners (like pure form of oud oil used in high doses, and la nuit is like a baby in-front of their power and projection, it is too light compared to them) but still that doesn't attract bad compliments for most of those guys.

My wife doesn't like my signature (Lalique pour homme) or Eau Savage (smells like an old man). She loves Chrome, though. Go figure.
JPG (smells like urine on me) and oddly, Aventus :-(

Don't you know Asia? It's that big country, like Africa.

I lived in Southern Vietnam for 2 years, it's always hot, I never received a negative comment, although I only ever went for a maximum of two sprays, usually only one.

I was wearing Une Rose by Malle and my wife said I smelled like a woman. I gave her the bottle since she's the only woman in our relationship.
My boyfriend said I smelled like his grandmother when I wore Shalimar. I have half a dozen of Shalimar bottles so he'll have to get used to it

I'm also in favour.

I was wearing Terre D'Hermes pure parfum, and my wife said I smelled like a vitamin C tablet.

Younger daughter told me Aramis and Lapidus PH made me smell like an old man. And she hasn't liked a single one of my powerhouse scents.
Older daughter is sensitive to smells, so I don't seek or get much feedback from her about anything.
Wife is pretty open-minded and is fine with almost everything I have (even Quorum and Narciso Rodriguez for Him), but she did say that Salvador Dali PH was "too weird" and didn't like it.

No negative comments from anywhere else... yet.

Green Irish Tweed
Most (like 3 or 4 in 30 years) have just been that I used too much, never really that it smelled bad. I can recall about three times when I wore too much, but never really that I stunk. Only complaint about the actual cologne was when I sampled Chanel allure Homme sport extreme. It did stink and my mom hated it.
I received 2 negative comments about DHS.

Probably because you do.

egoiste actually.. dissapeared somewhere in the back of my shelf
post #46 of 134
My wife is pretty picky & very honest with me about my frags. She generally only speaks up when she really likes it or really doesn't like it. Anyway, there's only been a few she's really complained about. Once when I over sprayed Rive Gauche a little (said I smelled like old man), once with Burberry London (I sprayed a couple shots heavy & very close to the neck & it was projecting like crazy. She couldn't stop telling me how much she disliked it...made me sad as its one of my faves), and the final one was when I tested Midnight in Paris EDP (she said it was the absolute worst thing she ever smelled on me, that it just smelled so strongly of overpowering rubber & baby powder).
No unsolicited negative comments, but I asked for impressions while wearing Bond's New York Oud and got several negative responses.
I put on 2 sprays of Angel Men before stepping out the door to start my day yesterday. About 15 minutes after spraying, I arrived at Subway to get a bite to eat.

The frag was still in it's heavy tar phase and the workers at Subway were making the most hideous faces ever! I actually felt bad for them.. but the tar always makes me smile because I know what it's going to dry-down to.

CdG Hinoki sticks out in my mind because of the almost unanimous negative comments, and my remembrance of "that look" on the victim smellers face, that "what is that?" look. I solicited all the reactions by asking people to smell it. I was a little surprized everyone was so negative because I kind of like Hinoki and still do.
Really, just two:

Musc Ravageur. Two women said never to wear it again. Never got a single compliment.

Bois du Portugal. One girlfriend threatened to break up with me if I ever wore it again.

My morning barista isn't a fan of Chergui, and complains when I wear it, but that's because she's fallen in love with GIT and gets mad when I don't wear that one. Strangely, she calls GIT "new car smell" because she says it's the only cologne that smells as good as a new car.
Escada Sentiment. College Friend said it was piercing. I used two sprays. In hindsight, it is pretty screechy.

Edit: That was the only negative comment I have ever received.
I posted this back when it happened but my wife's grandmother told me the DHI i was wearing smelled like Christian Dior himself had pissed in the bottle.
Someone once told me Musc Ravageur was too strong. In fairness I had just put it on and we were in the car. She even amending saying it smelled better later when it had calmed down.

Taiwan. I have never smelt fragrance on men here like...ever. It is considered gay for men and slutty for women to wear fragrance here...

Whenever my I visit my mom here and she smelt my fragrance. She always tells me "you can come out of the closet if you want to, I will be strong"

Tom Ford's Jonquille de Nuit - tried a dab on the wrist and SWMBO instantly replied with "THAT STINKS! It's smells like an old ladies room!"

Not too keen on it myself

Since when is smelling like a wet musky basement a bad thing ???
I've got NR (Narciso Rodriguez for Him) on right now, as a matter of fact. It ain't for everyone, I'll admit.
