Do you know what I'm talking about? It's a kind of minty woodiness up top. What is this? Wormwood?

I personally don't smell anything in common between these two.

They're both fragrances?

I'm wondering if recent reformulations could be to blame. I think u'd have better luck asking the guys @ Luckyscent.. They managed to find 2 bottles of vintage L'artisan Vetiver (circa 1978) just the other day. Since then, Bandit has been stripped of its masculinity & even the immaculate Derby seemed a bit off when I tried it @ Guerlain(bottle change is usually a BIG tipoff).

So I just put on the most recent version of Bandit, and I was immediately struck by a similarity to the most recent formulation of Derby... It's crazy actually.

I went to Basenotes to see if anyone had written anything and voila--Treeman you are totally right!! These two fragrances have quite a bit in common. Above all in the opening and ONLY in the recently reformulated versions.

I think the similarities come from the combination of leather and carnation. They are both leather chypres, and the most recent version of Derby in particular has a hefty dose of carnation in the middle.

Derby is "smoother" to my nose--the leather note is more well blended into the scent, whereas it sticks out more in Bandit and is slightly dustier in this incarnation--but Bandit could even be used as a cheaper alternative in my view. They are both excellent in their most recent formulations.

Anyways, no Treeman you are not crazy!!

Oldschool-leather accord

I dont know which formulation I have, I normally dont care abt it either, as far as similarity betn Bandit & Derby, as Nasenmann mentioned, old school leather accord, with Derby being a bit more dirty / animalic...

The bitter leather drydown.

Certainly the (rectified) birch tar. Birch smells of wintergreen, which doesn't all disappear when it's burnt and extracted. I mistook this for mint when I began my journey, but wintergreen/birch and mint are quite distinct if you smell them side by side, though they share a cooling aspect.

I dislike that ingredient tremendously! Aggggghhhh
