Recommendation from the house of Amouage, Creed or Guerlain

Hi Basenoters,

I'll give a sketch of my scene. I work as the manager and main salesman in a luxury watches retail store. So there are conversation with customers, and mainly I'am all day inside the store. I like conservatism and thus looking for a fragrance for daily and all season use. I'am a fuzzy guy, i strive for perfection. I would like to receive a recommendation from the house of Amouage, Creed or Guerlain. I prefer a good longevity and projection. It's nice when a fragrance has a natural feel to it. I don't mind florals at all.

Sounds like you might be working in a warm country, and indoors so I will say Eau de Guerlain, which may be a little underpowered but better than most in it's category and you won't annoy anybody in close proximity.

Creeds IMO vary too much from batch to batch.

If you want to send the right signals to your customers, in terms of character and confidence, go for broke - Amouage Opus VI.

Well then, I still recommend Eau de Guerlain plus maybe Vetiver or Heritage in small doses. I do't know Amouage scents but they sound a bit heavy for working indoors. I'm not a big fan of Creed but I think GIT is pretty hard to really dislike. Bois du Portugal maybe but it's even richer than Heritage (though similar).

I vote for Windsor and MI, both very versatile and well liked by the mass.

I'd be wary with Amouage though. Some of them are very strong so they may offend others.

You probably want something smooth and elegant, but no particularly strage or avantgarde, something pleasing to most people. Most Amouages will do, in small doses. I'd also point out Jub XXV (clean incense). Gold man, though, which is my favorite, might simply be too big and complex for the circumstance.

So far i see no recommendation for Amouage reflection (while it seems to be quite popular), no vote for Creed Original Santal or Original Vetiver (the newer releases on classic notes?) or Guerlains vetiver (maybe too bland) or l'instant (maybe too heavy?)? I don't think the scent should be weak either. A quality fragrance shouldn't be directly necessarily offending, quality will shine and may thus be noticed.

I made my recommendations on the basis that you work in an upscale environment, and thus would probably like an upscale fragrance. The Creeds you mention are fairly casual fragrances. Reflection is very love/hate around here, I think it's one of Amouage's worst. Almost any Guerlain would work.

Of the three houses you mentioned, I am most familiar with Guerlain. Almost anything from that house would work for your circumstance. You really can't get any more "classic" and "conservative" than Habit Rouge. L'instant de Guerlain Pour Homme is a more modernized scent from them, but I would still say conservative and with classical sensibilities(the EDT not EDP, which is more gourmand).

I was going to recommend one of my absolute favorites, Amouage Dia Man, but it is not a great projector. In a similar vein is Arsene Lupin by Guerlain that is.

it's best you spend a small amount of monies on samples then decide which suit you

rather than blind-buy based on suggestion, everyone have different tastes

and why limit yourself to only those 3 houses?

if i were in your position, i would go for

Hi, i once sampled invasion barbare. I have to say it was very fabulous. However, this one i had to enjoy very close to the skin. But the quality was topnotch.

If i may sumarize:

From Creed mostly recommended GIT, however doens't this one stay quite weak and come across as mainstream (i.e. coolwater)? I was tossing between OV and OS (got samples), but maybe JiveHippo is right, that the are casual frags. Also i find Bois du Portugal (smoother) somewhat similar to Guerlain Heritage (harsher).

From Amouage mostly recommend JXXV, i sampled this one, and yes, it's solid. From Amouage i'am tossing between JXXV and Reflection. Reflection sometimes is wow, and sometimes is cloying. I see everyone surpassing Amouage Silver?

From Guerlain, I see lots recommend Habit Rouge. I sampled it, but sometimes it comes across a a frag for men lets say 50+ (don't know why) just like Heritage. This idea has held me back to go for these. Is it just my imagination or would it go well with my age? Guerlain L'instant i don't prefer that much. I tried also the whole range of Guerlain Homme, but they are so light, i sometimes think just to drink it up as a cocktail. By the way, I have never seen Derby in a shop.

Another question. Do you guys think that Amouage uses more natural (essential oils) vs Guerlain?

I suppose what I'm saying is that you might as well go all out and get the most upscale fragrance you can afford. As has been pointed out, the Creeds are fairly workaday, and IMO, not particularly 'unique'. Opus VI is in the higher echelons of niche fragrance, in terms of price and I suspect, consumer numbers.

Try Guerlain Arsene Lupin (Dandy) and the city series if you can - Shanghai would suit the environment / clientele nicely, altho Moscow or New York might work for you.

Dandy opens with a smooth violet and slips into leather, Shanghai opens with a subtle Mimosa / Almond Guerlainade then slips into woods - both quite sophisticated, they don't yell, and unless you are required to yell at your clients they should do the trick. You might even find Arsene Lupin Voyou workable - it treads the same quite conservative masculine path as some of the Creeds but has a more complex structure.

Of the Amouages I would be careful because for a 'work signature' you might find several of the popular ones are a bit much day in and day out - Honour Man could be worth a shot, nice natural pepper to get you started and then a smooth, creamy woods to see you thru. Come to think of it, I just did a quick review of Opus IV over on the Sample of the Day Thread and this one could sustain daily wear if it agrees with you - again, I'm thinking of the environment you're in . . . might do the trick.

Whatever - really you should just try some and buy the one you like, nothing I or anybody else says will mean a thing if you find you like or dislike whatever is being mentioned

My recommendations are Green Irish Tweed by Creed as it is inoffensive to just about anyone. I am wearing it now, despite the fact I have a nasty cold/flu and yet it's the only thing I can just about tolerate.

Aventus is also a good option, but don't over do it with this one.

I would also suggest Amouage Epic Man though. A fantastic scent, bound to open conversations up and definitely a different one to the rest. Again, go easy on the trigger though!

For the last question. I believe Amouage was founded with the idea that the house perfumer could use any materials he wanted in the fragrance, so it is believed to be of the highest quality possible... or at least the perfumer never had to cut corners and put cheaper materials in to fit a price point.

As for the Guerlain comments: I think the scents are classical. My old man wears old spice so I experienced them for the first time and never got those impressions. I am in my twenties, I am a musician... in other words, you dont get much immature than me, and I wear Heritage regularly, with tshirt and jeans if i like.

Haven't tested any Amouage
Not a big fan of Creed, if I had to have any I'd go with GIT. I found MI and Aventus very disappointing. Which is good for my bank balance.
I'm a fan of Guerlain. I love L'Instant de Guerlain EDT. Beautiful Autumn Winter scent. I also really like Homme L'Eau and Homme Intense.

@ sroreilly - that seems to have been the case with the original 'Gold', but I think that Amouage are as affected by IFRA regulations as anyone else these days.

From Amouage by miles the most elegant, ethereal, luxury scent which would do in your profession is Honour Man. For selling luxury watches I think these are about the most important features.
From Guerlain I'm more hesitating, but in after all Chamade Pour Homme would do I guess.
From Creed I'm with the majority: GIT is the only -albeit obvious- selection.

Creed: GIT, Aventus
Amouage: Dia, Reflection, Memoir
Guerlain: Only smelled Tonka Imperiale and although I do love it, would recommend above fragrances over this one for your situation.

Forget the ubiquitous Creed stuff.
These five are all awesome and project discernment and taste. I would go further though - Just get Puredistance M! It is expensive, but you can pick up a sample or two from luckyscent at same price per ml as a bottle, and one or two 1ml samples will last you a while - and make the world a better place for you and those who interact with you!
