Fragrances that you have a change of heart with

Thread Starter
what are some fragrances that you either liked in the beginning but hated later on, or hated in the beginning but grew to really like it.

For me, I typically don't wear a fragrance over and over if I really hated it in the beginning. And I doubt I will have a change of heart on those. But a few that I thought were "meh" and later turned out pretty good are:

D&G PH, and Fahrenheit

I'm not really sure what changed for me though. My initial impression with D&G PH was that its soapy and a little feminine. I didn't hate it, but I didn't really love it. But I think the last few wearings of it, I started to get a sweetness in there and now I really like it.

With Fahrenheit, I really did not like the opening notes, but then I started to ignore the first blast of petroleum and started to enjoy the green and bright drydown and see why its a classic.

Versace Dreamer and Azzaro PH are two that I find so harsh and repulsive that I can't give it more chances... and yes, I've worn the dreamer all the way through and the drydown was still repulsive to me.

I don't have any love then hate fragrances though. I do have some ones that got less love over time but I still find them enjoyable, just that there are alternatives that gets worn more and are better.

Truthfully, My feelings for the fragrances in my collection have never altered one way or the other.

I had a change of heart with Black Afgano. When I first sampled it I didn't care to much for it. Thought it was too earthy. After one or two more wearings, I learned to appreciate this one. Even got a compliment from a fine woman on the elevator. As she stood next to me and walked out the elevator, she said "You smell wonderful".

I LOVED Bulgari Black a few years ago. Couldn't get enough of it so much so that I had three bottles total. Now, it seems to only smell of a burnt vanilla. totally gone is the tar/rubber smell that I initially loved. I will still wear it on occasion, but it just isn't the same.

the first few times I smelled egoiste I couldn't stand it...but for some reason kept smelling it. now I sometimes find myself wearing it to sleep...or 4 days straight :X

I've changed my mind about a couple of things I had listed for sale. I thought I didn't like them, but couldn't quite part with them either.

Scents I liked but now don't would be Cool Water, Lomani pH, He Wood, Devin, Nautica Voyage, Lolita Lempicka, Sung Homme, Lanvin L'Homme Sport.

I used to find Diesel's Fuel For Life a rich and compelling scent but then one day a few months back, entirely without provocation, it turned on me and went straight for the gut. Gave away my bottle that same day and haven't thought twice about it since.

Joop! Homme- first strongly disliked, now, increasingly enjoyed by me
post #10 of 41
First time I tried Chanel Bleu de Chanel, I hated it. Second time I tried it a few months later, I bought a bottle instantly.
Amen, the tar completely turned me off at first. I'm still not a big fan of the tar but have gotten used to it and love the fragrance now

My tastes change rapidly over my first, say, ten to twenty wearings of a cologne. At that point, they tend to be fixed.

Biggest change so far has been to Terre d'Hermes. Used to be one of my everdays; now I think it smells weird and never wear it.

Believe it or not it was Amouage Jubilation 25 for me. I bought a bottle over seven months ago. Did not like it initally, went back last week and now I am in love with the fragrance.

DHI for me, instant scrubber first time sampled, few months down the line sampled again and loved it , now own FB.

Dior Homme. Thought it was a mislabeled womens fragrance when I first tried it.
I've fallen out of love with L'Occitane Vetyver. Used to love it - it was my regular frag last winter. Now I only use it occasionally.
Thought really hard. The answer is no, never experienced love-hate and vice versa.
Had a few like to LOVE - Ambre Narguile, Dior Homme Intense.
Two so far that I have gone from liking to not liking, Gucci pour Homme II and Prada Luna Rossa. The one that I went from hating to liking, A*Men.

Creed Royal Oud. Thought it was really avearge at first. Now it's fast becoming a fave of mine.
Creed Royal Oud and Chanel Platinum Egoiste. Both are favs now.
Creed Royal Oud: The first time I smelled it at Sak's I did not care for it. The second time I went back I fell in love with it! Will be buying a bottle soon.

I think we have to "learn" about fragrances just like we do anything else. We can't always understand or appreciate them right off the bat. Just part of the education process for me.

The gourmands were the ones I had to "learn" to appreciate, and now, I certainly do.

I am having a general change of heart. Up until now, my tastes center around spicy fragrances from a couple decades ago. One example is Creed Bois du Portugal. This is not what I would call a subtle fragrance, and by today's standards this might be too much of a big statement. Anyway, lately I've changed my focus. I am interested in fragrances that do not make a big statement. More like gently pleasant but also lasting.

drakkar noir. hated it when i was younger but now that im in my 30's i can tolerate it's animalistic qualities. still can't wear it in the public though. lmao!!!

Fahrenheit: I still acknowledge its innovation and greatness. I can’t pinpoint when, exactly, I turned against it, but the disenchantment seems insoluble. I gave away my last remaining stock after keeping it around for a long time, hoping against hope, that the magic would return. It never did.

Chanel Pour Monsieur Concentree: A fragrance which at first struck me as nice but unremarkable. It ineluctably, over time, unfolded to my dawning appreciation as the masterpiece it truly is. I had the same experience as Gilgamesh2003: “...a repeat wearing revealed that it wasn't so much dull as flawless.” One of the most complimented scents in my collection.

Kenneth Cole Reaction. Loved it just four years ago. Electric apple was my impression. Wore it every friggin day for three years. Then I smelt some smells. For the past one year, havent sniffed it twice. Smells like toilet cleaner to me now.

Why? I blame Chergui

Hated Pure Malt first. Now love it!
Loved YSL Libre first, after buying the bottle I started hating it lol.
Hate when this happens! Watch I will like when this happens in the future :S.

+1 Same transformation here.

The only other I can recall is Tonka Imperiale. It came across as sickly sweet the first couple wearings, and completely unwearable. Not sure what was going on with my nose as I enjoy it now.

Angel Men: I hated it, loved it, and now that I have a full bottle, hate it again..

Vintage Monsieur De Givenchy: Glad I kept a decant before swapping a full bottle away, I'll have to be on the look out for this one again. Perfect springtime scent for me.

Hated Yatagan at first, now I can live without it. I also didnt care for Fahrenheit at first either, and again, I cant live without it.

creed - silver mountain water

like it @first sniff, purchased the bottle, after 3-4 wears, it gets cloying and don't like it ever since - it sitting there collecting dust atm.

Loved original Giorgio Beverly Hills and wore it for about 20 years. Still smells great but I don't wear it very often.

Puzzled at first with vintage Dior Homme but have fallen in love with it.

Dunhill for Men at first smelled like old man. Now I am one and I like it!

The ashtray smell in Gris Clair and the lipstick smell in Dior Homme turned me off completely at first. They are my favorite now.

Mona di Orio's Ambra. At first it smells like cheap lipstick. With time, it develops into a very nice, soft amber.

Another would Bois D'Ascese. Goes on on a campfire. Liked it, then got fed up smelling like a campfire, since it doesn't really develop. But now I want it again!

This happens a lot to me. Lately I thought Annick Goutal's Mandragore Pourpre and Eau Du Ciel were so bad, I nearly gave them away. I tried both of them again this week, after a four month hiatus, and I really enjoyed them.

I find the soap or deodorant I wear can change my perception of the perfume. One deodorant had me swearing off a whole string of perfumes until I cottoned on to it. Weather also changes everthing too.

Another one I changed my mind about is Atelier's Ambre Nue, which I still think smells lovely (oranges and amber) but which, after trying more elaborate amber frags, now seems very linear.
Kilian Pure Oud - at first it smelled like rubber tires, and was very VERY disappointed. Tried it later on and experienced the full drydown and it was amazing. Easily the most fancy and expensive smelling fragrance so far.
1 Million was an impulse buy after trying it...got it home and it was old that quick.
A*Men... The first time I sprayed it on my skin I was at the mall on my lunch break - I ran back to the office to try to wash it off... I HATED it! Made me nauseas.

Now however, things have changed... Might get a bottle.

I'm yet to sample Kouros again, that's something else I also hated around the time I first smelt A*Men

Had a very similar experience with T d'H, loved it at first, now I don't care if I ever smell it again.
My relationship with Sel de Vetiver is an interesting one. I loved it at first. Over time got very bored with it and found
it uninteresting. After I've set it aside for a while and try it again I love it again. Then I grow very bored with it, etc. etc. Kind of like having an attractive ditsy girlfriend.
I've found that with Creed fragrances in general, I will find them uninteresting initially but over time will warm up to them.
They're very inoffensive and often slyly satisfying.

Recently, Nasomatto Black Afgano.

Got a sample, loved it. Bought a bottle, gave it a full wearing. Absolutely nauseated me.

Same thing happened to me with Diptyque Philosykos. Got a sample of the edt, loved it. Bought a bottle. Longevity issues, bought the edp as well.
Recently, all it reminds me of is Ferragmo. Even with the beautiful opening
