Rochas Man - thought I would love it, but ended up hatin' it.

Rochas Man, good ol' Rochas Man.

I've heard so much good things about this fragrance. Cotton Candy, burnt sugar, chocolate, vanilla, coffee. Everything that I want in a fragrance! The only thing people don't like is the performance and that it's too sweet. Well, what do I think? Upon first spray I thought "what the hell..." No sweetness, no cotton candy, nothing. Just a very synthetic floral nastyness that makes me puke. Lavender? Yeah, I think that's what it is. But it's so damn weird. It smells like saliva to me.

Could it be my skin chemistry? Because that's what I thought. So, I sprayed it on a paper strip. What did I get then? The same thing!! Synthetic lavender overdose together with something that smells like saliva. It's disgusting.

The dry down however is good. I can pick up the coffee and the vanilla. It's light as hell, but it's there. And I like it

My god, that opening... I just can't be the only one getting this vibe. Are you getting it too?

I don't know how you are smelling what you describe in the opening. Must be a rogue bottle.

Rochas Man is in fact over loaded with lavender in the opening.

has poor sillage and duration, go for New Harlem by bond no9
post #5 of 28
Yes that's probably it and it ruins it for me too. Fortunately, Cotton Club for Men does it right (no lavender overload and the gourmand elements are offset by the wood note).

Rochas Man smells watery and diluted. Yeah, there's some gourmand notes, but the leafy and woody notes destroy the purity of the fragrance. And it's very synthetic.

I swear, New Haarlem is 10 times better.

He speak the truth - Bond No.9 New Haarlem is king!

Each to his own, I like Rochas Man but cannot stand New Haarlem for it's dense maple syrup with coffee vibe.

This....^^^^^^

Also I do enjoy RM and I get none of what t/s is speaking of saliva? Lol must be skin chemistry.

I enjoy Michael Jordan Legend the most out of all three actually.

I wanted to love both Rochas Man and New Haarlem, because I adore Musc Ravageur. Roucel made all of these frags. But there's something in the first two that I find very off-putting. I don't have a great love for coffee, so maybe that's the problem.

i like new haarlem because it is denser
I personally like Rochas Man from beginning to end.

I also find Rochas Homme a bit off-putting. It smells like some Axe body spray I can't recall, and it gets a bit stuffy on my skin. Bouthg it and gave it to a friend straight away. Funky bottle though...

Thank you all for your answers! Yes, I know that New Haarlem is denser and overall a better frag, and yes I do love it and it's in fact one of my favorite fragrances. But it's Rochas that we are talking about here. I'm giving this reaction from a sample vial. Maybe it's old?

Also10x more expensive! I have not smelled Rochas or New Haarlem, but do own and thoroughly enjoy MJ's Legend. I'll pass on Rochas but would love to sample/own New Haarlem someday if it weren't so expensive.

It's not THAT expensive. You can get the 100 ml for 150$ if you use the discount code that they offer. You live in the states as well, which means that you'll get free shipping too! That's a real bang for your buck!

Never had this sensation, probably, this scent simply works well with my skin and my sense of smell.

I like Rochas Man. Not bad at all on my skin.

I was exaggerating.

You can use the bottle for other things.

My main problem with Rochas Man, and I have some on my wrist now, is that while it smells nice enough - it also smells somewhat feminine to me.

Renato

I'll never understand why people like to compare RM & NH. Nothing alike to my nose.
To me, the opening of Rochas Man is floral... no aroma of saliva/spit at all :-P The longevity is good on my skin, very enjoyable fragrance, IMO. The only downside is the scent leans towards the feminine side. If you wear Rochas Man and stand next to a lady, chances are she will be complimented for smelling good, instead of you. (true story)

Hearing the floral bit is odd to me.... All I got was a thick syrupy honey and cotton candy (burnt sugarish) smell. It was really really sweet on me.
I never read too much into what people claim to smell within a fragrance. Just recently I bought Coney Island by Bond no 9 after hearing people talking of caramel, dark chocolate and other assorted candies and all I got from it was salty lime. Still pleasant but nothing like I'd been led to believe.

I really LOVE this! I added one full 100ml bottle of it to the first 50ml bottle that had bought previously...
