Guess whichFragrance...

I thought a thread where we have to guess the fragrance from descriptions and hints might be fun...

so, I got a fragrance today, that I have wanted for a while. One could say it is quite legendary. I had never smelled it before. I opened the box. There it was with its incredibly tall lid, the juice all green and inviting. One spritz to my forearm and its bitter sweet citric herbal harshness caressed my nostrils the same way that the Tsar Bomba caressed Novaya Zemlya. My daughter said "That is the most revolting thing I have ever smelled". My wife said "Take it to work and keep it there". I thought "Et tu..." as I went to wash it off my arm.

Brut?
Krizia Uomo?
Bottle, smell, reaction all matches with brut. except for "I had never smelled it before" and "its bitter sweet citric herbal harshness caressed my nostrils the same way that the Tsar Bomba caressed Novaya Zemlya".

No doubt whatsoever: QUORUM
Can't be Quorum because his wife wouldn't have said what she said (she would have said something lewd.) I was thinking Pino Silvestre but the "Et tu..." obviously makes it Brut.

Not Brut, nor Krizia (I have Krizia coming on a slow boat from Fragrancex - can't wait to get it). The one I just got is described as being a cheaper copy of another(maligned by many) fragrance. My description of the scent probably wasn't very good - however, I had to wash it straight off my arm, then later I had a shower and that was 11 hours ago and I can still smell it slightly! This one is a little harsh to start off with. The "et tu" was a clue, but I was not thinking about who it was said to. Brutus through his use of the knife was definitely not _____________ (insert name of fragrance).

p.s. isn't Quorum, nor Pino Silvestre either (my daughter actually has Pino and wears it). I've read some people say that this is not so strong, but the ladies in my house disagree.

AAAhh... Grey Flannel!

My wife's favourite. Nope.
Caesars and it smells awesome in hot weather. Good luck with it. Please, do not pour down the drain in case You decide You can't wear! I'm sure someone else will love it. And yes, it's strong.
pino sylvestre?
aramis herbal
et tu could indicate to caesers. its green. with big cap. legendary cologne spray is what the bottle says.
I think its caesers.
yeah, youre right...we just need it to be official

Correct! I love it, my wife hates it. I was greeted by a little girl today (I am a teacher). From 5 feet away she said "Are you wearing man perfume?"
I had that in mind but you said that you have never smelled this one before. That was the part that baffled most. Cuz if you have had experience with Drakkar Noir, you know Caesers. And its hard to conceive that a power frag nut has never smelled Drakkar!!!
Nevertheless, I would like to laud Scent- mental for this brilliant idea.
Gotta try it!!!!

Twice in Vegas, at the Palace, I had it in my hands and the asking price was 9.99 for the 4.2 oz and I said no.

Next time I'll get it for sure.

Anybody cares for another round?, I think it was fun
post #20 of 3148
You can get at the same price at TJMaxx or Marshalls.
I have not seen it at my local Marshall's, and there are three in town plus one TJMaxx.
try scentedmonkey.. they sell after shave, body wash and cologne all in a gift set for 18 and change. I am into layering so I think its even a better deal.

The one who guessed right should have another go, right?
Right!!!
But if the guesser do not start another go in 24 hrs he loses the right and anybody else can start a new one.

Sounds fair to me.

*Bump* Since Nevena started her own thread, how about someone else starting a new one on this thread. Anyone?

Since this thread has had no new posters I'll post clues to another one:
It has woods spices and florals. Cinnamon is prominent.
It is a rich powerhouse, which is discontinued, or is it just under protection?
What is it?

Congratulations Easyfish, you got it. Your turn.
OK, the flacon looks like a taylor´s dummy (vintage) and it got a female counterpart (with another name!), both iconic scents of the 70`s.
Could it be Snuff by Schiaparelli?

At first I thought Le Male, but that's not old enough. Then I thought it might be something by Avon...(they had lots of wacky bottles) but what? My knowledge of the 1970's is fairly thin. There is a bottle I have seen - it's from a company that I know makes stockings (my wife had some of this brand) the company begins with Sc... but I have no idea if this is the company. Shocking

Nevena got in first. I think the ladies' version might be called Shocking.

No, no, my fellow powerhousers!
Another hint: herbs, herbs,....

Hmm tricky, herbs...
Yatagan
had a bottle like that..
I think.

Nnnno! It got the "herbal issue" it its tagline!

Aramis 900?
Hm, there was a popular cheapo called Rocky and it was very herbal and in a torso like, but flat (from profile) bottle. It came out shortly after the famous film. It was not a copy of a famous frag. The same company made later Cobra - the Poison copy. So, Rocky man?
...The point goes to the leader of the pack! Congratulations, shamu!
Aramis 900 Herbal Cologne with its ladies´equivalent Aromatics Elixir.
Congrats, shamu!

Easyfish, I see no similarity between the Aramis 900 bottle and a taylour's dummy. Was it sold in a different bottle back in the day?
Nevena, this is the bottle I have, which does look like a tailor's dummy:

I love Aramis 900! I think I'll wear it tomorrow.
I guess it's my turn now:

I recently re-purchased a scent that I've been a big fan of for a long time. I'd used up a bottle many years ago, but didn't replenish it until now. It smells very traditional and is in a style that is considered by the general public (at least in the US) as being no longer in style. The big clue? People who don't like this scent often say it makes a man "smell like an old lady". It is marketed for men, so we're not talking about something marketed as unisex or ambiguous as to gender here.

What is it?
Hähähä, I know! - "smell like an old lady" = JHL. Am I right?
Yeah, I get it. I imagine a dummy has to have a nipped in waist and that's why I never thought of this one. I do not find it depassé at all. It's not even macho. To me it smells of money. Was never very popular in Europe. It's quite avangard for its time when masculine was masculine.
I knew someone would guess JHL! No, it's not JHL. That would have been too easy.
That ineffable scent with the two oo! in the middle?
It's not Joop Homme, if that's what you're thinking easyfish.
Here's another clue, sort of: it is not an obscure or discontinued fragrance, yet it's one that seems to be hardly ever discussed in the Mens Forum, for some reason. Again, the old lady thing is the real clue here.

Lagerfeld Classic? A real floral powDerhouse.
Nope, not Lagerfeld Classic. Good guess (definitely gets the old lady wisecracks), but that one is talked about a lot on the Mens Forum.

Here's another clue: it was released after 1990, but still has a very old school smell. It smells like it could have been released some time in the 1970s.
Balenciaga pour homme?
Not Balenciaga PH. The one I'm thinking of isn't discontinued or obscure.

Remember - OLD LADY SMELL!

I'll wait for two more guesses before I throw another clue out.
Rochas Lui ? If not, I´ve at least promoted this hidden retro vibe gem! Go out and sample!
Hm, "old lady smell" is a personal perception. Here are some masculine frags described as "old lady" but it's not how I myself smell them - Antaeus, Grey flannel, Habit rouge???
A Priscilla Presley scent?
Opium Pour Homme?
None of those.

Here's another clue: it's a chypre. And it's obviously a chypre - no one would debate this, trust me.

Man, I love this frag. I can't believe I'd gone five years without replenishing this jewel.
Jaipur?
Not Jaipur. Jaipur is an oriental. This one is definitely a chypre, without question.
