Sandalwood Cologne

For me this is a very special fragrance. As has been noted before, it does have similarities to Chanel's Egoiste but I find it considerably more wearable. The Chanel seems almost too perfect for me, no rough edges, like the woman with the perfectly made up face, all the contemporary designer clothes, immaculately presented, sunglasses who hangs out in places just to get seen there. Don't get me wrong, I wonder at the beauty of it, the craft, the ingenuity. I just don't feel particularly comfortable wearing it.

Trumpers Sandalwood is not like that. It is warmer, friendlier, it has creases it hasn't paused to iron out. It sometimes just goes where it need to go and then goes back home without waiting to be seen. It evolves too, turning around to show an ever changing range of different faces. It lacks the shrill aldehydes which characterise the chanel, replacing them with complex florals which sit deep inside in gentle balance.

Well, I just got my sample pack in the mail the other day, and Sandalwood was the first one I teed up. I like this one, and, like with Eucris, I found the excellent quality of its ingredients to be obvious from beginning to end (I also find this to be the case with many of Creed's scents, which is the main reason I like a lot of their fragrances). I totally agree that it smells like a crude Egoiste, particularly in the drydown. I really liked the drydown, which was pleasantly sweet and multifaceted, which is how I describe Egoiste. My only complaints about Sandalwood is that I was hoping to smell something more unique - it just smells like a number of fragrances I've smelled before (not just Egoiste), even though it's better than the others. Would I be considered a nut to say that the opening and middle accords remind me a lot of Pi by Givenchy? It's also not quite my style, and I doubt I would wear this often. That being said, I do appreciate and respect this scent.

I feel I have to slightly amend my impressions of Sandalwood. I find that there are many fragrances that cannot be properly evaluated without a proper wearing, where a simple spritz or two on your hand doesn't do it justice. Sandalwood, I've found, is one of those. Today, I actually wore it as I would any of my usual scents, and it was a totally different experience. I like it a lot more, and will consider buying a full bottle. The opening and middle accords did NOT smell like Pi this time, and I also noticed a slight soapiness in the opening accord that I didn't before. I also detected a slight orangey Habit Rouge-like note in the first hour as well, that I didn't detect with just having it on my hand. In sum, it's a winner, and one I can see myself wearing.

Just chipping in that I enjoy a couple of mists of Santal Noble on the body, followed by a little splash of the Trumpers on the neck and sideburns. The Trumpers gives things an edginess and sparkle to what would otherwise be just a delicious velvety envelope of warmth bordering on smugness. (Hmm, speaking of which, I wonder what the Matrix's Merovingian wears as his signature frag?!)
