Hello all -

These are the fragrances that I will be sending to Ankica and Doc Elly on Friday (02/19). Irina, Andrew and Balava, send me your addresses so I can send ship them to you as well.

Spicy Leather - I have spent more than a year formulating this scent through its various phases, and the development of this fragrance certainly shows that. The prominent notes include Orange, Galbanum, Cinnamon, Cardamom, Vanilla, Balsams, Santal, and Musk.

Dark Oudh - The base of this resembles a lot like the Montale Ouds. This is my simplest (but satisfying) creation. It has notes of Oudh, Santal, Vanilla, Patchouli, and Rose.

Dried Flowers - This has an old lady smell to it, however, I have not completely finished this scent. The base is Musk and Santal, and the middle notes contain various flowers; some of them are - Ylang, Jasmine, Rose, Neroli, and Frangipani. I'm hoping you guys could recommend some top notes for this.

(contd. from above)

Sweet'n'Nutty Spice - The prominent notes are Fennel, Cardamom, Hazelnut, Santal, Vanilla, Beeswax. I wanted to create a Gourmand fragrance, and it does smell a little like sweet BettleNut. There is little to no development for this fragrance.

Oudh Out - The development of this fragrance goes through a very 'stinky' phase - because of the Oudh in this, as I was not able to mask/control the stinky phase of Oudh. This is certainly not one of my favourite, however, someone with an appreciation of Incense and Oudh might like this. Some of the notes are Oudh, Frankincense, Santal, Vanilla, Saffron, and Cardamom.

Eau de Cologne - This is a traditional Eau de Cologne with typical Cologne notes, however, this is parfum strength and would advice to dilute it a little before trying.

These are my six current scents. I have more that are currently in various phases of their development, but will be ready in a couple of months.

I was able to ship the above samples on 02/26 to: Irina, Ankica, Doc Elly, and Andrew, and I'm hoping that they arrive to everyone by the end of this week.

The stopper for the sample bottles that I ordered is made of cork, and I had to go through a lot of mess when bottling these - I don't think I'd be using these again. I tried by best to work around the cork stopper, however, when opening them I would advice to twist the cork (like opening a soda bottle). That way any pressure that would have bulit up in the bottle during the shipping process would release slowly, and the string attached to the cork won't break. Also, these are parfum strength fragrances made only of natural olis and absolutes, so I would dab just a little on the skin to make sure you aren't alergic to any of my ingredients.

If you all are interested in sending me your samples, my address should be listed on the package. Waiting to hear back from you all on this forum.

Thanks.

I received the samples yesterday. Thank you, FragrantCloud!

The little bottles with the cork stopper are cute and original, but they don't work well for shipping. There was a lot of leakage from most of the bottles, and one had leaked most of its contents. Maybe they could be sealed with sealing wax all around the cork before shipping. The labels had floated off of a couple of the bottles, but I think I have them all identified correctly. There's still plenty of perfume to sample, and I'm looking forward to it. The first thing that I noticed was that it looks like there is a lot of suspended solids in all of the perfumes. I'd be curious to know what that is. Did you add ground spices?

Hello Doc Elly -
You are right. I spent a lot of time and effort in packaging these, and I had an intuition that these might leak along the way. I was hoping to seal them by wax, however, the only wax I had was sented, so didn't bother. Either way, once bitten twice shy :-)
You are also right about the ground spices as well - I make my own infused tinctures for spices and roots in my alcohyol base. From Orris root, Vanilla beans, Saffron, to various culinary spices. Its always easier/cheaper to make your own infused tincture for expensive raw materials, than to buy their essential oil/Absolute counterparts.

I posted a review of your EdC on the DIY Perfumes Swap thread. The system won't let me paste it here because it's too long. Anyway, your tincturing method really works. It's obvious that all of your ingredients are of the highest quality.

Today I'm testing Sweet Nutty Spice, which I like even better than the EdC. I cheated and took a peek at your description. Now I see that what smells anise-like is actually fennel. I also pick up a distinctly nutmeg-like scent, rather than cardamon. Did you use any nutmeg in the mix?

Thank you for sending the samples. It's a real pleasure testing them.

Looks like someone got their knickers in a knot over the word "swap" in the DIY forum. I think Stuigi missed the whole point of the swap. It's not as if we're selling stuff on there!

Hello Doc Elly -
I sent a PM to Stuigi, and an email to Grant asking them to re-open the thread. You are right - this DIY Perfume Swaps *group* doesn't let us post more than 100 characters. I'm hoping that either they can re-open the DIY Perfume Swaps *thread*, or have a higher threshold for characters for the DIY Perfume Swaps *group*.

I'll send Stuigi a pm too, as swapping DIY perfumes seems to be against the forum rules anyways:
5.8 The sale or trade of 'home-made' fragrance decants in the Marketplace is not permitted

Crap!

I just saw your notes on the perfumes, FragrantCloud!!! They really help as I'm done smelling them and most of my 'intuitive' notes coincide with your descriptions

thank you so much but one went all around package

FC Dark Oudh: The perfume is dark, almost black. Like the others it contained some particulate matter from the leather. In the bottle and on the cork it smells like plum pudding with marinated raisins. It goes on smoothly and doesn’t seem very oily. The oud and other wood immediately becomes apparent. To me it’s a pleasant scent from the start with none of the skankiness that oud sometimes has at the beginning. I think it also contains sandalwood, and that mellows the oud. It dries down to something that I perceive as almost entirely sandalwood. This is an austere, basic wood scent that is good on its own, but would also be nice for layering.

FC Oudh Out: In the bottle it’s a uniform dark brown with quite a bit of suspended solids. The smell in the bottle is vanilla, turmeric, and spices (probably cardamon and possibly nutmeg). It goes on yellow, with the same notes, which quickly recede to leave a spicy, woody scent. The oud is prominent in this phase, but the other notes are still there, especially the vanilla and spices. It dries down to a woody, slightly spicy oud/sandalwood combo. A nice scent, similar to the others, but not my favorite.

Also, I still haven't received yours. I'm hoping that it should arrive sometime next week.

@ Doc Elly - For the Dark Oudh, I agree that this needs more development, as I have not added any middle or top notes on this. All the ingredients I used in this fragrance is conprised of mainly base notes, and this scent is very tenacious. I'm thinking of adding a rose, cinnamon, and clove combination, and the top notes to be Clary Sage (?) perhaps.

Ankica -
Appologize for the leakage in the shipment. Hopefully the bottles had a little in them still preserved to test. Let me know what you think, and also I sent you my address via PM.

Doc Elly - For the Oudh OUt, my insipration were the Amouage Attars, however, I failed miserably. There is a heave dose of Frankincense, Sandalwood, Vanilla, Rose ($), and Jasmine (in addition to the obvious Oudh). For the spices I added my Cardamom and Saffron tincture. Let me know if you are interested in the formula for it.

I still need to learn how to use these groups.
We are here only commenting FC perfumes right?
I will write soon
Ancika, we can now post comments in the DIY Swaps thread on the forum. We are commenting on anything that you have tested from any member of this group. I think you've commented on most of mine already, but I expect that you have Irina's, too.

If we are supposed to post a sticky on the DIY swap thread or on this group, here's what I suggest:

The DIY Swappers are a group of people who make their own perfume and have gotten together for the purpose of exchanging their creations, giving and receiving feedback, and comparing notes. The swaps that take place within this group are for educational purposes only, not for barter or monetary profit.

Basenotes takes no responsibility for the quality or safety of the products that are exchanged, nor do they assume any responsibility for assuring that both ends of a swap take place. All DIY swaps are undertaken at the risk of the parties involved.

Hi All, I just joined the group today. I am new at perfumery, but very excited. I have a few I am working on and would love some feedback at some point. How can I best get started in this group?
