New project, Italian cities...

Venezia, Firenze, Milano, Roma, Napoli
I have started composing 5 new fragrances that will feature these 5 Italian cities.
It will be called "The Italian series".

Having lived in Italy for the last 26 years, I would like to interpret the soul of the "Bel paese" with these fragrances.
The historical spirit of an Italy that is being forgotten, as the country is sinking into fear and awe with the economic application of the "shock doctrine".
This is my action - reaction to the spreading of the obscure force that is overwhelming the European continent, recalling the timeless song of the Italian people’s soul.

Bella Italia! Very interesting new project. I have never been to one of the cities but when I was a child, my parents, my sister and me made a few times beach holiday in Misano which is very close to Rimini.

The Misano area is the only one not overcrowded in summer time and is the place where I also go swimming.
I remember the holidays there very positively. The "Bagnis" with the clean beaches and the nice service (table tennis, seat reservation etc.) and the nice family-owned hotel (Hamilton).

My demand is to English speaking people, do you feel that the names of the citie in the perfume would be better in English or in Italian?
Venezia, Firenze, Milano, Roma, Napoli or Venice, Florence, Milan, Rome and Nalple?
Do you prefer the name of the 5 perfumes project to be "Italian series" or "Collection Spirit of Italy"?
I vote for the names in Italian (and Italian Series). I would love to participate in the sampling project as well.
Sounds like an interesting project Profumo. I love Italy and Italian
fragrances (Roma, SMN Cologne Classica etc) Personally I prefer the names to be in Italian and the
series to be called Italian Series.
If you need any testers for the scents, I will be happy to make comments and give you feedback.
I think you may have copywrite trouble if you use the names Roma and Dolce Vita as there are already
perfumes using those names (although not together.)
I vote for the Italian names too. It adds to the authenticity and projects a more intimate image of the cities.
Yes, I also vote for the Italian names, they'll be much more appropriate for such a project and using Italian will make them more unique
post #11 of 133
And as a cosmetics chemistry 2nd degree student I will be happy to help you in the process of creation too.
I think you should be authentic to yourself, since this is ultimately what you are trying to create here, a picture of the cities you know and love. And how do you know them? Not by their English names I'm sure.
Happy New Year to all. I would stay true to yourself and have them Italian. It sounds more poetic and feels more evocative before you even smell them that way.
Definitely the Italian naming.
Italian naming of course, it has to be authentic.

Thanks Keward. The names are not definitive, not until the project has been completed. A perfume, like a person, can have several names. It is said seven names.
Yes I believe that the names should reflect the Italian flavor of the cities.
I think the Italian names would sound much more genuine and melodic. I also prefer "Italian series".
I would also love to be involved in the evaluation process through sampling should that take place. This sounds like a very evocative and interesting project, especially for people, like me, who've visited the cities.
I vote for the Italian names and "Italian series" for the collection.
I would like to receive samples and comment on them. I have been to all the cities except Milan, and they are beautiful places to evoke in scent.
I agree, go with the Italian names for the Italian Series.

And I would be very happy to sample these, if they're made available - thank you!
woohoo )

i am happy to participate if you wish to include me, i will give my honest oppinion ,

i was thinking a lot after trying all natural perfumes, and concluded in the end that it is very hard to make a perfume at all, its very easy to say what you like and dont like about it, but very hard to make what is breath taking......

what i would like that you somehow make them longlasting whatever they will be they should have at least 3 hours of music and some projection , like Mecca Balsam that is very longlasting...Arabian series was all a bit on the masculine side i would like you to make one very femminine one and longlasting )..... i like Tasneem, its simple beauty, but lacks longevity and projection, i understand....just giving some wishes i have

for Rome i suggest some bergamot , mandarines and some rose in the opening something fresh....also if you would include some exceptional frankincense that would be awesome

i vote for Italian names...i would call them bella Italia

Venezia-romantic unisex of mediterranean spirit with special details, Firenze-must be femminine , Milano- can be more masculine notes, Roma-should be complex one , Napoli-can be with tuberose

oh i must add, i think Italy has unfairly been put into the "problematic" country group, becasue of its big public debt, but fundametals of that economy are much stronger then those regarded as safe heaven i believe in Italy ,it has competitive economy, i just hope people do choose someone more "serious" then Berlusconi , then i have no fears for Italy!! viva Italia, viva EU )
What a great idea. I also agree with others on keeping the names Italian.
I am in love with everything Italian.
Of the cities mentioned in the project, I have visited all except for Venice. Shame on me.
Please, let me know how I can help.
I, too, vote for the names in Italian.

Ivanita, these are interesting considerations. About the longevity you could read the iconolastic speach od Guy Robert at the Brittish society of perfumers about longevity of perfumes. The transcript has diappeared from the archives of the BSP site but I have a back up that I shall upload in the next few days for basenoters.

Perhaps these cities have a different character at different seasons of the year ? I like the idea that different perfumes can give the feeling of different seasons.

The names should be in Italian and the project's name should be "Spirit of Italy". Thus, a sentence might be, "We were delighted with the new fragrance Venezia, part of Profumo's "Spirit of Italy" collection released in 2013."
I would love to participate in as much as possible. I think the names should be in Italian, not English.

Repeat post.

I vote for all italian names too~ Very interested in what your milan one wil be named / smell like
post #33 of 133
Yet another vote for the Italian names. Giardini Sergeti di Firenze sounds fabulous!
I vote for the italian names. I would love to be involved & to give feedback on samples! I am from Ireland, but love Italy. I have been going there for holidays for about 10 years - my favourite being Firenze. My husband & I love Italy so much we got married in Firenze in 2007.

I have been to Venice, Rome, Florence and Naples, but have not yet been to Milan.

I am really looking forward to hearing more about this project

'The Italian series' sounds great! Keep the names strictly Italian for authenticity.

Welcome iivanita, I have uploaded the iconoclastic speach of Guy Robert where you will find his say about perfumes longevity. http://www.profumo.it/perfume/guy_robert.htm The salient parts are in bold characters.

I also think you should stick with the Italian names. I'm biased...my parents came from Italy and I grew up hearing the lovely language at home.
I hope I'm not too late to join this great project. Ive done testing before. I did some for Wooznib(nice stuff) and I am presently testing Secraction for O'Driu. I would love to help out!

Definitely keep the Italian names. The names allow an individual to mentally picture the city. A good example is Ortigia-Sicilia and their line.

Cheers Rex
(Im keeping my fingers crossed)

Agreed on using Italian names. I don't think people will be confused, and it adds a nice touch.

Hello Mr Profumo,

thank you very much for the link! it was fun and funny to read it , i know its easy to imagine perfect things but to create them is completely different thing,
he compared perfume to the music i must say i have no problem in smelling my perfumes all day long, and i rarely complain about longevity but it really is a special joy when beautiful perfume smells for hours, 3, 5 or even more and thats what people want as well....i can not contradict to any professional let alone Guy Robert,( i like his Gold for women its such a strange perfume, difficult to understand that i am amazed that there are so many people who say its beautiful, it is beautiful but .....it was not an instant beauty, like Miss of the world, its more like beauty of character, and uniqueness),
but i know when i apply more sprays of something it will smell stronger , longer, etc, there is something physical to this all, not just mental........
there are perfumes who last for days(those in high concentration, oily), there are some who are even too strong! too loud, all that to me is important part of perfume evaluation ....
and i did notice sometimes before i "understand" or get to know some perfume better i think it is short lived (3 hours) and later, after getting to know it by wearing, i discover that i can smell it all day long........

i would be very interested to know do you measure how long you can smell your own perfumes on yourself?

Reading that article came to my mind notes that i really like very much, but must be an expencive one and not used in many perfumes and could fit to Italian spirit Ambrette seed, i like it so very much in Chanel No 18! makes that perfume special....also wish it could last a bit longer, that perfume is on gentle side from projection and longevity perspective, but can pass
then Rose but not bulgarian one its so overwhelming , that is allways like some soliflore scent, i imagine Taif rose to be so so beautiful
and as a third note wich i like instantly! Geranium...its such an refreshing flower, instant beauty....

i hope you dont mind me taking this opportunity to say what i like
post #42 of 133
This sounds great. I've been to all those cities, so I think it will be great to smell your take on them.
Please count me in, if there are any spare 'slots' - I would be delighted to learn more of your style of perfumery, which seems distinctive indeed.

Now: I think the Italian names of these cities (five technically makes it a 'pentapolis'! Pentapolitan?) is best in Italian, too. Otherwise they would not be true to the cities whose spirit they hopefully reflect. I prefer the title 'Italian Series', but only slightly, for there is merit in both names. To me, 'Italian Collection' suggests what the collection _is,_ whilst 'Spirit of Italy' suggests what it aims at. The latter may be more revealing, and the former more accurate.

I am curious about the intended notes for each - particularly Rome. I can't imagine what you have in mind at the moment. Presently it offers all the anticipation of a puzzle!
This project sounds facinating ! I would love to be involved with it if I may?
As to the names : I think that The Italian Series sounds better to me as spirit of_____ tends to sound rather haunted.Or pep-squad-ish.In general I prefer the names to be in Italian as it does seem more appropriate to the brand.(Similar to how Guerlain is often in French ,and other brands too for thier country/language).
I really like the concept for this project, it conjures up so much possibility and can't wait to see how it develops and turns out.
My goodness, the thread really "exploded" in the last 3 days - so many posts!

As for the names I would use Italian names. Maybe the whole series should have an Italian name, something like "Serie della Italia" or "Serie Italiana" (hope that's correct Italian ). I think it's no problem for English-speaking people to recognize it as "Italian Series".
I also vote for the Italian names--

Thanks to all of you for your enthousiasm and your support.
The overwhelming advice is that the names be in Italian and thet the name of the collection will be (Italian series).
I was in doubt about the names in Italian because I have lived so long in Italy that I do not have anymore the foreigner's perception about the language, and I needed you to show to me what a non -Italian international audience would feel more beautiful for the names of these fragrances.

Dear friends,

The first version of the first perfume of the “Italian series” is ready to be sampled. It is “Milano Café”.

The concept is that the characteristic smell of Milano is the aroma of coffee that invades the streets, the working places and that is present in every social occasion, be it professional or leisure.
I have added the chocolate, that is either added as powder to the cappuccinos or given together with the cup of coffee as a single square piece nicely packed.

The third note of the accord is a multi ethnic note of woods and spices that features the Somali and Arab shops and restaurants that have flourished in the city in the last 20 years.

The perfume is warm, dry and woody. The original blast of coffee- chocolate melts quickly in the woody-spicy notes and using it gives 2 types of satisfactions, the first minute “soo coffee” and then after that the heart and end of the perfume.

The free samples will be available
With Lisa at STC (1 ml) along with any order of decants passed there (from next week)
At profumo.it from now on in 5.5 ml minis (for Basenoters only, do not forgot to mention it) with any order passed there .
You can test the perfume and write your feed back, comments, reviews on THIS thread. According to what you say I shall either keep the perfume as it is or adjust it for a second round of sampling.

So no samples without ordering something else then?

Hello Nasemann, do you have something to suggest?

Lisa is helping me by adding the free samples to her shipments, she is paying 1.65 USD for every parcel to US/Canada and you can spend just a small amount in decants with her.
In the last group projects the samples on Lisa's STC were given in the same way and this is the best choice I could imagine.

On my side I am paying the shipping by post 10.5 USD or 25 USD by UPS.
I have tried to compensate by making the free sample as a mini of 5.5 ml (for basenoters only) which is worth about 16 USD.

The sample is free, do you have an idea how to make it work about the transport?
I had not previously heard of the Somali and Arab shops and restaurants of Milan. My guess is that they do not have much international prestige, as a layer of that city. That you incorporate this unusual element into your evocation of Milan's cafes suggests to me that you do not only mean to appeal to these cities exotically (which would be a sort of Orientalism applied to Western cities), but to how these cities actually are.

Hey Profumo,

I sincerely hope I didn't come off as greedy, I just didn't expect it. Personally, I live in Germany, so shipping should be considerably cheaper and my suggestion would be that everybody simply sends you the money for the actual shipping costs + the sample vial (1-2ml) via PayPal. Would be easily done if you'd be able to post a short list with the shipping fees for the usual countries/continents:

USA: 10,5$
Europe: x
Australia: y

It is necessary for the developement of the project that the samples reach quickly, by post office they take five up to ten days to reach in Europe and 10 days to 3 weeks for US/Canada. It is not compatible with the timings. Someone may receive the free sample while we already have passed on to a new perfume.
Nevertheless your idea is good for Germany, UK, Holland, Spain, Belgium, Portugal, Greece and Italy. Whoever is in one of these countries and wants to receive a 2 ml free sample, let him paypal 6 euros for the shipping costs at our paypal account (contact me me by private mail for our PayPal account).
The free 5.5 ml Mini stays as an option for whoever orders on Profumo.it and requests for it.
For US and Canada, the most convenient option is to sample anything at STC and Linda will add the free sample (1 ml.)

Thank you for your help Nasesmann

Yes Merely, Somalia was an Italian colony and still many somalis speak Italian. You are right, the multi Ethnic trait of Milano is an insider's view that tourists do not see if they do not sojourn long enough in the city. They go to Italian restaurants and shops while milanese people, when they want to change taste, go to exotic places.

What conditions would apply to Hungary, guess the same as the rest of Europe? Now to understand we paypal each time and by when the 6 Euros? I do not believe I have paypal right now, what other payment conditions are possible? Is Western Union and sending the fees together and not separately possible or not? Sounds like a wonderful project, just slightly complicated to participate.))

Hello OVincze, Nobody knows how many free samples for each of the 5 fragrances this project will involve. For this reason I cannot make a bunch shipping expenses but STC is a good alternative for you because with just a few euros more you will receive not only the free sample but also some decants of any brand that you wish to test.

I shall ask the post office tomorrow about shipping to Hungary.

Dear BShell, maybe you are in time to stop her by phone or mail. She will receive the brand new perfume later this week, I am shipping it to her today.
In any case, she will send only on request, and if you have asked, she would certainly wait before sending your order, knowing that the perfume is arriving.
