Any idea what company makes this? At Sengakuji temple (in Tokyo), I have seen similar boxes. One of the varieties available is called 'Ama-cha,' leading me to believe that it is made by Awaji Baikundo, although the label is just Sengakuji.

no idea for this. could be made by the temple themselves. perhaps jay/kotaro may have more information
when i bought them at the temple personally, the temple communicated to me that this incense was unique to sanjusangendo

the whiff of these incense sticks burning in a huge incense burner, being laid in 5 stick trails.. was one of the nicest experiences in winter time kyoto...

Kyarazen-san! Ten thousand thanks for your generous Dharma gift of incense! I look forward to many peaceful and insightful meditation sessions, scented and deepened by your gifts! I regret that I have little of such value to offer in return.

I broke off about an inch (25 mm) of the thickish, square Sanjusangendo stick I received and smelled it. The unlit incense smelled, to my barbaric, untutored nose on this day, rather bitter-sweet, like anise or black licorice. The burning stick carried this note through, but then added a deeper, warmer element that reminded me of vanilla, tonka bean, and bitter almonds. I definitely look forward to burning this again, and comparing it with the other incenses I now have!

Sounds interesting. I will have to see if I can locate a stockist in the UK. Having said that, the UK is quite barren when it comes to Japanese incense. We are usually limited to the cheaper offerings from Baieido, Shoyeido and Nippon Kodo

Checked the few UK sites and drawn a blank. So little choice over here.

Barry, I live in the US and would be happy to order some incense for you and then send it along. Perhaps we could arrange an exchange of some sort, because I'm quite fond of some particular English mints that I can't find here in the US, and the shipping costs from the one UK eBay shop that will sell me their mints are kyara-level lavish!
