Cloon Keen Atelier

Galway’s gorgeous candle emporium, Cloon Keen Atelier, has just branched out into fragrance.

Cloon Keen Atelier was chosen by Dublin Castle to scent the soaps, lotions and diffusers for the royal visit and state dinner during the Queen’s visit to Ireland in May.

2 Fragrances in the range (so far):

Bataille de fleurs - Along the Promenade des Anglais overlooking the azur Mediteranean, the Bataille de Fleurs carnival has been celebrated every year since 1876. Here mimosa blossoms are thrown from flower adorned floats while the crowd battle for the precious bouquets.

Inspired by this celebration Stéphanie Bakouche has translated this incomparable olfactory atmosphere into Bataille de Fleurs. It is a tribute to the unique and beautiful mimosa tree and has a deep round sensual, yet bright, note which is enhanced by a green aqueous freshness, creating the windswept atmosphere of being on the Côte d'Azur.

Castana - Inspired by a childhood memory of the mouthwatering aroma of street roasted chestnuts in Andalusia,
Perfumer Delphine Thierry has captured this fleeting sensation and translated it into a sophisticated and signed perfume. The centre piece of this composition is an overdose of Haitian vetiver, which is traditionally a more masculine note. However, when combined with the super feminine and luxurious floral notes of cassia and jasmine absolute, an opulent nontraditional perfume is created.

I have been living in Galway for 20 years, knew about the candles and I've never even thought of going in to see the shop! How bad is that??? Will definitely have a look around and let you know what I think. Sounds good.

Magali,

Looking foward to hearing what you think of the fragrances

Hello Everyone,
I am just back from Cloon Keen Atelier and I am trying to gather my thoughts quickly before I forget everything.
First of all, the lady owner (I forgot to ask her name) is extremely friendly and helpful and knows her perfume extremely well.
At the moment they have 3 fragrances all in 50 ml. You can sample them at the counter. Most are unisex maybe except Bataille de Fleurs. They sell in KIlkenny and in another place in Ireland but I forgot the name. It might come back to me later. They hope to be distributed in Les Senteurs in LOndon.
The 3 scents are Castana, Terre de l'Encens et Bataille de Fleurs.
She is currently working on a newer version of Castana which seems lighter in the top notes but quite similar in the dry down and a new Lune de Givre (Frosty Moon) which has a nice name. I think names are important too even though the modern perfumers seem to prefer just numbers or codes.

I tried Castana (which means Chestnut) on my skin. It is very nice and definitely not common. Very high quality. The dry down is very chestnutty like Creme de marron (sweet chestnut puree) and maybe a little too sweet for me, but not overly so. I smelled so many, it's hard to be objective sometimes.

The others I smelled on the litlle paper bandelettes which means I don't know how they would react on my olive skin.

Bataille de Fleurs is definitely more flowery but not very. I don't know if it is the mimosa but it almost seems to me like Yellow Gorse, slightly coconutty with a hint of soapiness. I'd like to try that one again.

Terre de l'Encens (any hint to Hermes?) is light enough but it's hard to know what the longevity would be. Slight burnt, toffee smell ever so slight.

Lune de Givre is quite appealing to me but once again I have not tried it on my skin and I don't know whether this will be the final version. Reminds me of Un jardin sur le Nil. Green notes? Aquatic notes if that makes sense? Lotus? Melon?

Now that's all I can remember. I forgot to ask for the retail price. Maybe somebody knows.

Bye for now!
Magali
