Bel Ami has been stepped on more than once ,so currently BAV is the better option imo

But, Bel Ami (vintage) -- well, that is (was) just an amazing juice

As I only see Bel Ami vintage going for silly money, and seem to miss the occasional reasonably priced auction, I've resigned myself to trying BAV instead one of these days, at least it's not such an expensive blind buy, and I might even, gasp, try a sample first.

Yes. I happen to own and like both, but prefer the former especially in its vintage form.

As one who has never smelled the vintage Bel Ami, I see nothing wrong with the current version.
It's a great one on it's own; it's very potent stuff and I reserve using it for the colder months.
The Vetiver flanker it's a little more versatile IMO.
    I own both.

The problem with the current Bel Ami is that it comes across as a mutilated perfume. There are some components missing. It is too citric, not because it is too citric but because all the leather and styrax have been taken away and makes the citrus look unbalanced. The spices are still great, but the whole composition is only high treble, lacking in mid and bass sections. I take it to be an unfortunate of regulations and the way the modern perfume industry works. Get an earlier version, or go for Puredistance M or Roja Dove's Fetish pour Homme.

Bel Ami Vetiver is very nice. It immediately arrests the problem in Bel Ami with the dose of vetiver and smoked, soft woods. The spices are dulled, less bright, but more legitimate, soft, and exquisite. This smells like high quality leather handbags. Sillage is somewhat underwhelming, but longevity is acceptable - either is better than the current version of Bel Ami. Overall a bright light in the current dull and dreadful market.

Vintage Bel Ami EdT in the shaker bottle can be found at reasonable prices, if one gets lucky and looks around a bit. I saw a 100 mL go for something about 30% above current retail price not long ago, though I don't know the state of the contents. Seller must have been oblivious to the price (s)he could have charged.

You could also do like me, hunt down cheap vintage minis, as it hurts a bit less if the juice is off, because it is such a small amount. I have amassed a good amount of fresh shaker bottle Bel Ami in that way, with no duds so far

Buying the mini also lets you test out the vintage stuff before deciding if it is worth getting more.

Here is a thread I started a while back, I contemplated the same thing.

    http://www.basenotes.net/threads/400...Hermes-Bel-Ami

I ended up with 4 bottles of Bel Ami modern formulation due to listing mistakes by Amazon and Overstock.
I sold 3 of them for around $80 ea. and swapped one for Costume National Homme.
I ended up pooling the money together for 2 bottles of the middle formulation of the fragrance and enjoy that one the most.
Its HEAVY on the birch tar. I find the first, original to be more chypre in character than the middle.
I did end up trying the latest formulation via sample from a member here and its thin.

I'll leave it at that until my YouTube dissertation on this fragrance this fall.

If purchasing Bel Ami, try to purchase the original or 1st Reform (above). I would prefer Bel Ami. Started it all!

Why not get a sample? I buy blind if the bottle is $15 or less and it looks like something I'd enjoy, but for considerably more money, I'd get the sample first.

Love them both, but vintage Bel Ami is my numero uno in my collection. As noted, vintage is incredible, but the current iteration of this fragrance is much better than most designers being sold today.

Bel Ami Vetiver bears the original's DNA, but it's a "thicker," smokier fragrance that is quite nice but not quite as versatile as the original IMO.

Tbh this thread is not mine. It somehow was lost in the directory and trying to avoid creating a new one I bumped it. Curiously it didn't have anything as introduction. The question about blind buying is by the original OP, but anyway I will have to do the same since it will be hard for me to buy samples.

I'm tired and drawing a blank on the current Bel Ami right now. But the vintage is oh so wonderful! Holy smokes. Wow. It's really easy to see how it could be a #1 fragrance in anyone's collection.

It seems most here like the smell of the original vintage one better and regarding current formulations, the Vetiver version.
Bel Ami indeed seems to be above the average designers sold nowadays, that's the reason of my interest. I wonder if I will be missing too much with the original one instead of Vetiver if I don't know the 1st and 2nd formulations.

Here's the thing, if you have to ask this question then I think most will assume the cost will be rather high, to your budgetary standards. So, if that's the case, then I'd say no, because you can get other old school leathers for a lot less, even something like Clint by Avon, which cost me about $9 for a 5 ounce bottle on ebay not long ago. Unless you know that you want exactly what Bel Ami offers, which you don't, I don't see it as a good idea.

It's been a while I've been looking at it and I always think that if I won't like it I will sell, but I barely (even more barely nowadays) sell anything. I think I wouldn't have trouble to sell it, but I feel "lazy" about selling perfumes. I think that if I start doing it more often I will "suffer" less. I like better to trade but I think it can be even more difficult. Thanks for the tips buddy.

I bought Macassar A/S at a much lower price than the EdTs were selling for, and it's quite strong, at least EdC strength, but some A/Ss are weak so I'd create a post and ask what others think of BA A/Ss strength before buying it (and I doubt it will be that cheap anyway).

I've had good experience purchasing Bel Ami from here with Canadian Dollars which currently is 80 cents U.S.
I would purchase here for 1st and second Edition. My last purchase was 100ml Bel Ami 1987 After Shave factory sealed. 145 CAD or about 115 USD.

The latest Bel Ami and Bel Ami Vetiver use an inferior Woody Generic Base, I find objectionable.
