Default The ULTIMATE Basenotes LEATHER thread

Sergey (Moon_Fish) started a thread a few weeks ago on Vetiver and this got me thinking about starting similar threads for other notes.

Please help me make an exhaustive list of fragrances with main notes of LEATHER.

Discontinued, Rare, Hard-to-find, or even inexpensive or drugstore brands are welcome! If you have tried the scent yourself and can comment on it, please mark it with a star*

    Thanks!

    Oud Cuir D'Arabie *
    Bel Ami *
    Antaeus *
    Cuiron *
    Dzing! *

For the ultimate leather scent, one need look no farther than Montale Oud Cuir D'Arabie. Setamp turned me on to this one, and it is fantastic. I also love the smokiness of Bel Ami and the herbal punch and unusual beeswax note in Antaeus. Cuiron has thus far left me cold. A little too sour and not enough leather.

Dzing! is more like the hide of a living animal than leather. Love that Dzing!!

My favorite is Royal English Leather by Creed.

It is not overpowering but the Leather is definitley there.
The mandarin takes the power of the leather down just enough...

These threads are a great idea!

It'd be nice to see them somehow incorporated into the "features" area of the BN board once they get finished. They might make a good resource for those just getting started with fragrances ... and a good way for us more seasoned members to more efficienty dispose of our savings! 8)

From a recent thread, here are three more leather fragrances:

    Serge Lutens Cuir Mauresque*
    Santa Maria Novella Peau d'Espagne*
    Knize Ten*
    ..."net", not "naut".

    Great threads (the ULTIMATE series)!

I don't think anyone has yet mentioned Santa Maria Novella Nostalgia or Christian Dior Jules.

To my nose, Nostalgia is all petroleum distillates and unwearable, while Jules is leather, leather, and more leather -- and I love it.

Caswell-Massey Persian Leather also comes to mind, but I don't own it.

Okay, so I overcame my laziness, went to Osmoz and searched on leather and came up with the following raw materials: Cananga (Canangium Odoratum Macrophylla), Styrax (Liquidambar Styraciflua), Atlas Cedar (Cedrus Atlantica), and Castoreum (Castor Fiber).

Dunhill for Men (1934) has an underlying leather thread running through the entire scent. It isn't the animalistic type of leather as in Antaeus, Yatagan, or Aramis, but the fumey type of leather as in Bel Ami. The scent is overall kind of spicy, but not overpoweringly so, as Z-14 can be. The top notes are kind of zesty... a little bit reminiscent of Sung Homme. Initially I thought it was a more wearable Z-14 (an excellent, inexpensive spicy-leather scent), but now I find it to be more complex and well ahead of its time.

Added bonus: I have heard that Ian Fleming in the 007 novels had Jamed Bond wearing Dunhill. [smiley=tekst-toppie.gif]

    My first post!

    Heres one more:

    Aigner In Leather
(there's versions each for men and women)

I have no idea what the scent is like, only heard from it from a online friend who has a fetish for leather. Heh.

Can anyone recommend a leather scent for someone who is too used to something like Bulgari Pour Homme? I was introduced to Bulgari PH when i made an online order for CK One and the guy ran out and he offered to substitute it. I don't wear much perfume, but i find Bulgari (what's the difference between Bulgari and Bvlgari?) PH one heck of a fantastic scent compared to what i usually find other men wear. I just got my 3rd bottle yesterday, and i'm falling in love with this scent all over again, which made me scour the internet for reviews of it (after visiting wikipedia to answer my queries of differences between Eau De Toilette and Eau De Cologne), which lead me to Basenotes.net. Don't really have much money (still a college student, heh) to really experiment on different scents, but i'm very much intrigued, and shall pop by perfume stores more often from now.

    Heh, anyway, great community!

This might explain why nearly all the leather scents I have smelled let me down. Somehow they just don't smell like "leather" to me...either they smell like the chemicals used to tan leather, with a very sharp and piercing quality, or they smell soapy or waxy, like leather cleaning or conditioning products. Are there leather scents that smell more like worn-in, well-used leather?

So far my favorite has been Trumper's Spanish Leather. I also have a sample of Oud Cuir d'Arabie that I like, but the oud seems to dominate that one and I don't get a lot of what I would call leather.

    Yatagan (Caron)*
I'm wearing it this morning. An unusual scent, bold and sharp; with herbs, leather, and animal notes.

    Devin (Aramis)*
Excellent, similar to but more delicate than Yayagan, slightly sweeter with a hint of florals, no animal notes, verstile for any weather and setting/audience.

I also saw Antaeus* mentioned. I use it but I don't get much leather from that. At least it's not listed in the notes officially. However, an indescribably wonderful scent with a beeswax base. It's my number one tied with Egoiste (if I had to choose a number one--but please don't make me...there are so many...)

Although I don't use them, I can also mention:
    Bel Ami
    English Leather

    Shunz-
Welcome aboard! When I think of Bulgari Pour Homme, I think of it as a subtle, long lasting, masculine fragrance. For a leather along the same lines, consider Habit Rouge EDT (starts out strong though), Dunhill for Men (1934), or Worth Pour Homme.

Leather is a tricky thing... it is different things to different people, not like something like say cinnamon or lemon where we all know exactly what it smells like and there isn't too much variation. I say try as many frags as you can and see what you like and ask us about them when you find ones you like!
    K

PS I agree with Renaissance Man that I don't get leather from Antaeus, but I also don't get it from Knize Ten, another one with a wide reputation for being a big leather scent. I think this goes to show that leather is a tricky, subjective beast!

The note on Trumper's website seems to be saying that there is no leather in their Spanish Leather: it rather comprises notes that have traditionally been used to perfume leather. That's sort of the problem, isn't it? People perfumed leather because they weren't that keen on the smell of the leather without the perfume. So maybe our conception of what leather is supposed to smell like has been conditioned by frequent exposure to leather that has been so treated. Wood's of Windsor is another, apparently based on a formula that was used to perfume leather in centuries past. I've tried that, and it, on the other hand, doesn't evoke leather at all to me. Unlike Antaeus, which also seems not to include any leather, yet which (and this is surely part of its genius) manages to somehow make you think it does.

I read a while back that the so-called 'new car smell' that has so often been thought of as leather was analysed, and found to consist of a (quite toxic) brew of precisely the sort of synthetic substances you would expect to find inside a new car that, needless to say, doesn't have any leather anywhere. Also that some store owners buy cans of it to spray around their shops, regardless of what they're selling, and that doing so makes sales go up in a big way.

The true leather fragrances with which I am familiar seem to present leather as really rather delicate, not terribly interesting by itself and not very enduring. The controversial results of intensifying it -- into something traditionally thought not universally pleasing -- speak for themselves.

not sure if anyone has mentioned it in this expansive thread of Marlen's but Abercrombie & Fitch's Ezra Fitch has a nice leather in it. Very very approachable, a good "starter leather" for those intimidated by what can be rather prickly accord. nice flacon too.

Keiko Mecheri A Fleur de Peau* - my absolute favourite. A soapy, semi-sweet aphrodisiac. Stunnig stuff.
SL Cuir Mauresque* - masterfully handicrafted, the diva among leather scents: there are days I can't stand it while on other days I adore it
Creed REL* - elegant, distinguished, your "tonite I'll have a night out in my leatherchair club, smoking cigars and having some glasses of really expensive whisky" scent
Chanel Cuir de Russie* a floral leather, marketed towards women, but totally unisex IMO
Trumper Spanish Leather* - you love it or hate it. I love it. Not as much as KM, but it's very easy to wear for any occasion.
Creed Cuir de Russie* - tested it several times, I love its head notes, but find the drydown not too interesting; a bit weak

However, after an hour, this stuff started to smell too similar to real suede! And that can be a bad thing as you get the same salty smell of real suede. Perhaps that appeals to you? Not to me..reminds me of my shoe closet which has quite a few pairs of suede shoes... Apart from that salty note, this is a really really good fragrance. So if you like the way REAL suede smells like, I highly recommend it.

In Leather Man also replicates the smell of real leather almost exactly.

    Any leather sofa wannabes here?

I love my leather tinged with a little tobacco. But straight leather suits me too. Growrrr!

    Serge Lutens Daim Blond *
    Serge Lutens Cuir Mauresque
Santa Maria Novella Peau d'Espagne* - pure liniment ointment. urggh!
    Chanel Cuir de Russie
Creed Cuir de Russie * - great in summer
    Aramis Tuscany *
    Caron Tabac Blond
    L'Artisans Dzing!*
Piguet Bandit * - chypre with attitude
Gres Cabochard * - beautiful leather chypre influenced by India
Balmain Jolie Madame* - violets grow on a bed of leather. feminine and yet very powerful
    Bel Ami *
Chanel Antaeus * - Aromatic fougere with sophisticated leather base.
Dana English Leather * - meh! Straight leather with a touch of citrus to open.
Dana English Leather Limed * - Pure masculine territory! Pine, citrus and strong men working in the open air. My ovaries salute these men (and yearn for them)
Dana English Leather Spiced * - Yum!
Dana English Leather Musk * - Smooth, subtle and comforting but also very sexy!
Caron Yatagan * - Unique. Celery, sage and herd loads of leather.
    Aramis * -
Aramis Havana pour Elle * - My second favourite leather right now! I am stockpiling reserves as we speak.
Lagerfeld Classic * - Soft powdery, delicious!
Halston Z-14 * - spicy leather, almost gourmand. Great in cooler weather. In fact great anytime!
Miss Dior * - another great leathery chypre
Paco Rabanne La Nuit * - an uncompromising leathery floral chypre. Reserve for after dark.

    Will update soon.

Jean Pascal - A strong leather, at times Aramis-like. Nice sweet notes in the top to start.
