Thread: Kouros

    Default Kouros

Hmmmmm. Seems we haven't had a thread on it for a looooong while. I think I should start one.

Anyway, I haven't smelled Kouros in ages (since I was very-very young) and really didn't remember it at all; hence, I more or less stayed out of the conversations around it.

Went over to Sephora today to get an atomizer for my Envol (Especially for Renato: now this is truly a unisex fragrance; it'll smell totally different on a man than it does on a woman, I just know) and thought - what the heck, let me sniff it. Ve-e-e-e-e-e-ery carefully I sprayed some on those paper thingies they have and - I gotta tell you, guys - it's GOOD.

Then I attacked an unsuspecting gentleman and asked him if I can spray it on him instead of the paper - and no one refuses FroFro - and I still have to say - it's GOOD.

To a female nose, that is.

    So, there you go.

I have been considering giving myself a sponge bath with a urinal cake in the morning. Seems like it would be just as effective as a couple of sprays of Kouros before heading out.

Yup. That's a point a LOT of people don't quite get... Kouros, to a man, either smells good or bad. But to a woman, Kouros is "the good stuff". Hence the violent reactions to Kouros on the boards.

Guys who buy scents for *themselves* to smell good *to their own nose* will usually think Kouros smells like urine. Guys who buy Kouros to smell good to themselves and those around them usually like Kouros. And guys who want women to think they're hung like a horse will make Kouros a staple.

That's the whole point of my last thread on this:

Stop it, eidolon. It smells nothing like a urinal. Not that I go around habitually sniffing urinals. :

    Rushkae:

This brings us back to Renato's point. Personally, I just don't see myself being attracted to a guy smelling like lily of the valley. I may befriend him, though, to borrow his fragrances.

Men should be just a tad stinky. In a non-offensive, animal kinda way. I think Kouros mimics that animal thingy very well.

Unforgivable. And not P. Diddy's kind, either (I sniffed that one, too. Peeeee-eeeew! The drydown is nice, though, but the first hour or so - absolutely nauseating to me.)

I hope people don't think I'm trying to be funny or that I'm just being dramatic when I say that Kouros smells like a dirty bathroom because that is honestly the vibe I get from it. It is really that gross. However, today I tried KCS and was like "OMG!" My strong reaction was because there were aspects of it that reminded me of Kouros but low and behold I actually liked the scent! Unfortunately it didn't last at all. The top notes kick ass though.

No offense, but this has been discussed many times over. Beaten to death even. I totally get the bathroom vibe, but only because of the one antiseptic note, that on my skin crushes every other note. It smells almost exactly like a bathroom sanitizer (a disinfectant spray, air freshener, urinal cake sort of smell). That's almost all I get. That, a little incense and a couple floral notes. But nothing, I mean nothing, animalic at all. It's stinky on me, but stinky in a chemical way. MKK, on the other hand, is incredibly animalic on me, never relenting throughout the entire drydown.

It just goes back to the issues of 1) skin chemistry, and 2) olfactory perception. Not everyone, male or female, perceives a scent in the same way. And of course every scent is going to smell slightly different on everyone who wears it. I wish this one smelled animalic on me, because it's a lot less costly than MKK!

How very strange. I didn't get that "anticeptic" note at all - neither on the strip nor on the very accommodating gent.

And when I say "at all", that's exactly what I mean - AT ALL.

kouros. it's a mystery. a mystery wrapped in a sexy, stinky, animalistic, antiseptic, manly, pee-stained enigma.

When I first spray on Kouros, I mostly get a strong perfumy punch. If I sniff deeply enough I can smell a little of that "urine" thing people talk about, but it probably from the power of suggestion. I do smell and appreciate the animal notes in it though. But the top notes are not what I really like about Kouros--it's the mid and especially the base notes that I crave.

    Great stuff.

I don't think it's a matter of men not liking it. It seems more likely with the explosion of unisex and feminine-male scents, we're just not accustomed to something that smells like MAN. It's just intense. The first time I smelled it, I HATED it. I didn't think about urinal cakes or anything else. I just thought it was nasty.
Then i came back after a few years of educating my nose and I think its GREAT. I'm still not crazy about the top notes, but as soon as it dries, DAMN is it good.

Women already have flowery, sweet feminine scents for themselves and they WANT men to smell different. They EXPECT us to smell like Kouros, even if we think they want us be in touch with our inner woman and smell like a bouquet. I man wearing Kouros doesn't have an inner woman.

Anyway, I think it's a trend. All the scents that I used to hate and now love are the violent alpha male gorilla scents like Esencia Loewe, Rive Gauche, Kouros, etc. I just had to do a bit of adapting. Just my thoughts!

Till this day, Kouros is my most highly complimented frag. I labsolutely love it. It has awesome longevity (one of the best) and has a beautiful drydown that just gets better and better. First blast can kill you but it changes in 15 minutes - perhaps that's the price you pay for the intense longevity. I too have never understood the urinal connection. I never get offended when I read this though -- as I respect other's reviews.

When I smell my tee shirt in the morning after wearing Kouros, it's that OMG, what an awesome scent this is. And women, from my experience, love it.

It must have to do with body chemistry because when i sprayed some on my wrist the first thing I thought of was urine. I had read so many positive things on here about it, I wanted to like it, but the first hour was sickening. The drydown wasn't bad, but I couldn't imagine going through that first hour again no matter how many girls would compliment me afterwards. I'm jealous of you guys that can wear it, but it's definitely not for me.

This is the thing I've noticed with ALL YSL frags (except M7)... Do NOT, EVER, spray it on as one thick glob (you can safely bathe in M7). Let it mist. Let it hit your skin like a big cloud rather than a fireman's hose and you'll be amazed at the difference it makes (except M7, which seems to enjoy the firehose treatment).

I've never looked at the pyramid for Kouros but I know these are a few of the notes:

    geranium
    carnation
    jasmine
    orris root
    cinnamon
    vetiver
    patchouli

It's a dynamic and slightly dirty smell that will, for many women, generate the desire to s_ck a golf ball through a garden hose, or whatever. I mean, there's certainly nothing wrong with that for either side.

The original marketing stated that "Kouros is a cologne for a man who is in touch with his body and understands the importance of fitness. A virile and energetic scent that reflects a liberated, frank and provocative personality."

I love it but it can make me feel supremely agitated when I wear it. I have to go light on it. I'm an intense person and Kouros just enhances that. It's a sex juice. No question about it. I remember when it first came out. It was all over the porn industry.

It's a clean, soapy smell to me but also a slightly dirty one with a strong edge. I do get the urinal cake note but it's not something I've thought much about. My female companion genuinely gets off on it and so do some others I know. I must try the other versions of it. I've always felt good in it but lately it makes me feel a little more hormonal than I like being that I have enough of that going on already.

When I bought Kouros, the SA told me that it was the one frag that she wouldn't let people spray in the store
I told her that if she didn't give me some samples, I'd start spraying it everywhere. So she tossed me a sample of Joop and said, "here, you're probably the kind of person who would like this."

On a side note, I agree that M7 is very forgiving of heavy spraying, even though a lot of people here have commented to the contrary. I also have no problem with a heavy application of Rive Gauche.

I'll have to try it out with a light mist next time I am near Sephora. I'll probably also try it at various times throughout the year to see if temperature/humidity makes a difference.

I am with you on the fence. I did hate it at first, but at some point it occurred to me - there is no point in wasting energy "hating" a fragrance. Either it works or it doesn't. After 5 or so tests, all with the same result, I gave up. So I guess for now, Kouros does not work on me.
