    Default Ultimate Barbershop Scent

Ultimate Classic Barbershop smell... your thoughts? Douro/Lords from Penhaligon is the closest thing i've tried in this vein.

    1) Le Male <which is actually advertised as so>
    2) Burberry Brit <powdery softness is reminiscent of one>
    3) Habit Rouge <z more classic take on the genre>

    hope this helps

I would check out anything put out by Geo F. Trumper, from my experience the house note is that "barbershop scent", high quality stuff

For classic barbershop fragrances, you need to investigate fragrances from the following perfumers (in addition to Penhaligon's):

    Geo F Trumper
    Crown Perfumery
    Taylors of old Bond street
    Floris
    Caswell Massey
    DR Harris
    Truefitt & Hill

My ultimate would probably be Crown Imperial which is a classic citrus reminiscent of an Edwardian babershop.

Truffet & Hill Trafalgar is about the most "barber shop" I've ever experienced.

Also consider Caswell Massey Jockey Club, and Arden - Sandalwood.

I think that Caron Pour un Homme is evocative of a barbershop.

Excuse me but why would a barber shop have a specific smell?

And what exactly do they mean when they advertise Le male as a barbershop smell? Like why would my barber shop smell like Le male???
    Am I missing something?

I doubt any barbershop smells like Le Male, they would most likely smell like shaving foams, maybe a fragrance that smells like gillete shaving creams? I personaly like the smell like Gillete shaving cream, would also like to know of other scents that smell like it.

The "ultimate" barbershop scent? I wouldn't presume to have any idea what is the "ultimate" barbershoop scent.

I do find that both Floris Santal and Floris Elite remind me of barbershop scents.

Trumper's Sandalwood is what I would want my fictitious barbershop to smell like... warm & manly.

To me, the classic barbershop scent needs strong neroli. That's why I agree with 4711 and similar scents only.
I don't know about Le Male or Drakkar Noir! That's not a barbershop, that's a salon!

A few months ago I stopped going to a hair dresser and started going to the neighborhood barber shop. I was surprised to see the same Pinaud products that were in barber shops years ago. *From what I read on one web site, the Pinaud Clubman line of men's toiletries began in 1810 in Paris, and they are the most widely-used brand in U.S. barber shops.

I listed "Le Male" as a barbershop scent simply because that is what it boasts to be. In the fold-out insert included in the tin, it basically says that "le male" emulates the scent of a classic barber shop... So, in tune with the topic.. I figured I'd toss it in.. was supposed to be a little tongue in cheek.. but I guess it missed its mark..

btw, I also vote for Rive Gauche as once, since... to me, it has "shaving cream" written all over it..

I agree with most of the suggestions except GIT, Dior's Homme and Mugler's Cologne.

GIT is a fresh-dry scent like Coolwater + Eternity, Homme smells like woman's face powder and Cologne smells just like a bar of soap... doesn't connotate barbershop to me at all.

I will add Dior's Eau Sauvage Extreme as the Ultimate barbershop scent - this is a grandfather perfume.

In Spain 50 years ago the way to use parfums by the mens was the Barbershop.

Barbershp smells shaving soap, hair, tobaco smoke, afther shave lotion with a lot of menthol, the brands where Varon Dandy, Lucky,Floid and Aqua Velva (the yellow one).
    Hair lotions spice bay rhum.
Fougère notes with lavender, geranium, spices, oakmoos, patchouly, tonka (coumarine) and amber-musc.

Canoe, Brut, Paco Rabanne pour homme, Drakkar Noir, Cool water, Eternity, Herrera for Men, XS pour Homme and in oriental version Le Male are the evolutions in the classic mens fougere notes, all with a more or less Barberhop memory smell.

Each country has different roots in the mens parfums history, but in my opinion is the barbershop atmosphere smell + Baby colognes.

Finally we're talking about Pinaud. I started a thread a couple of weeks ago about that line and no one touched it. I haven't tried Bay Rum but I have tried Citrus Musk and Clubman and like them both. My barber shop carries their products.

Oh yeah! IMO, the Pinaud line of "longnecks" are THE quintessential tonsorial parlor scents! *:P

Their Lustray brand is still around, too! My favorites are Lustray Spice, Draggon Noir, and Lustray Menthol -- the latter which is now sadly discontinued. *:-?

sorry to digress from Dennard's eagerly awaited Pinaud discussion, but I just sniffed Lagerfeld Classic for the first time (on my lunchbreak no less) and, IMO, its everything thing this thread is all about.

To be honest, I`ve always wondered what is this barbershop-scent thing in the first place. I don`t quite get it, must admit.

I guess we don`t have this sort of culture at all...Of course I know what is barbershop, but what scents have to do with it??

    Could anyone explain, please??

I couldn't agree more. The barber shop that I go to is very old-fashioned. The guys working there are no less than 60 or 70 years old. While I don't think that they sell anything from Pinaud, there are a bunch of other tonics on the shelves. The smell of a barbershop is not just hair; I've been to places with the hair-only scent and it is entirely unpleasant (basic training...).

But, like someone else mentioned, I wouldn't want to smell like a barber shop. I take a shower as soon as I get home from there.
