    Default Finally tried Original Santal

Ahhhh modern Creeds. *Again I get to give my not so humble opinion on this one. :-? My initial impressions have been argued here ad inifinitum regarding Himalaya, OV, and the direction the house is taking of late. *So finally, after much talk there comes Original Santal. *I do find the irony of the Original in the name quite amusing as my primary point of contention with them is the complete lack of originality or vision that they have. *Their modern scents to this point have been nice. *Their vintage scents are head turners worthy of the inordinate amount of attention they get here. *Selection Verte, Bois de Cedrat, Vintage Tabarome, Royal Scottish Lavender, Cuir de Russie, *Santal Imperial (one of the better sandalwoods available regardless of the fact my kids told me I smelled like a quesadilla while wearing it) are all brilliant scents. *Vintage is elegance and brilliance and challenge. *The last ten year? *Boredom. *The current ones are nothing more than that. *The new Creed scents are the last Rolling Stones disc. *
    * * In the chatroom the other night I used the following comparison about the differences between OV and Vetiver Extraordinaire. *OV is a steak at Outback. *It's better than most chains but you won't remember a whole lot about the meal besides the fact that it wasn't bad. *Vetiver Extraordinaire is Smith and Wollensky's. *You can find scents that are strikingly similar to Creed's last few entries into the market that challenge you and take you to places that merit talk and discussion about the finer points. *I do wear and like OV and Himalaya, but again I wish there was more. *This begins the trip to try (Un)Original Santal. *
    * * So it was with some interest that I went to go try Original Santal. *After finding the tester at Neiman Marcus, I finally got to give it a whirl on my skin. *I gave my wrist one spray and that's when the horror began. *It starts with a sharp burst of stereotypical Sandalwood sharpness. *WHile I have heard some people discuss that this scent isn't a pure sandalwood scent, or has a different take on it, I will vehemently disagree. *On my skin, this scent is pure sandalwood with a horrid cloying sweetness that permeates everything that has the terrible misfortune of entering your personal space. *
    * * It's the strongest scent Creed has put out in their modern line and what a horrid mistake that is. *One spray and I'm choking. *It's like a virus that gets onto your skin and starts replecating itself exponentially with your body heat. *I'm not so sure if the comparisons to Joop! are regarding the notes but this scent makes A*men look like L'eau Par Kenzo in it's projection (to clarify in this case, not a good thing in any way shape or form). I don't see *a lot of Joop! in it but this scent will knock you on your ass in much the way that the old woman at church who just basted herself in Chanel #5 will. *It's eyewateringly wretched. *
    * *This is an typical uninspired sandalwood scent. *If you want a comparison take Floris Santal (good scent) and add a ton of vanilla and then cause it start converting your skin cells and the air around it into more molecules of the horrid scent this is. *If this is the first of the new breed Creeds, god help us all. *This is basically what Fierce would be if the house had access to better ingredients. *If Serge Lutens' Un Bois de Sepia was made stronger and had a huge blast of sandlwood in it it, it would be this. *
    * *At lunch, again I have on spray on my wrist and I'm wearing a long sleeved shirt, as I sat down, my sister (who NEVER has ever commented on my fragrance ever) said, "Jesus, you're wearing WAY too much cologne, that's terrible". *My 80 year old grandmother also commented on how she thought it was awfully strong which isn't a good thing. *
    * *With the other newer Creed scents, I've revisited and come to like, but not love. *This scent I will never try again, it's bad enough that I"m going to have to shower. *This makes Santal Noble look like O'pomelo. *Horrid stuff. *Uninspired stuff and if the current people don't completely strip the name of their past glory, it looks like there's someone waiting in the wings to do their best to continue to put out wastes of our time. *Terrible. *What a disappointment. *The only thing original about this scent is how cloyingly horrid it is. *

I've started to like it, but only as araoma therapy when climbing into bed. Too scared to wear it outside for fear of just the reactions you got. Would be great as candle incense oil though.

I still haven't tried it, but a sample is on the way.

Oh dear,oh dear, oh dear... I've just been given a sample of this and i must say i love it!
Didn't like it immediately i have to admit ,but i now love it's creamy sweetness. It's very persistant and long lasting and not gone in a few minutes like himalaya for example.

Funny you should mention floris' santal, This is something that you should put on you're meals ...not on you're skin......absolutely horrible!

The thing is, if I like something i'm never going to change my opinion just because somebody else doesn't like it.......You say your sister found it way to potent, but did YOU notice this after trying it?

I have to agree with Mr P on this one. HORRIFIC stuff. That sickly cloying sweetness (and you know how much I love Gaultier 2!) overwhelmes.

Seems Creed have become the "Quality copiers" of mass market scents, and they don't even pick the good ones! LOL

Excellent question! I was worried about it's strength when I could smell it strongly in the car on the way back from the store. For one spray, that's no small feat.

    Hey Paul,

Go bathe in some Yatagan and you'll feel better. Original Santal was one of the ones my ex-cleaning lady stole months ago. Needless to say, I did not feel a need to replace it. I just hope she gave it to her husband and that he spritzes 20 times every morning and reapplies after dinner. They should be dead by now!!!

Ouch, that hurted, cause I kinda like Original Santal. But hey, even die hard Creed specialists like Ikkitos didn't like it that much, so that says enough. And a scent has to be real bad for me to hate it. ( maybe I have to refine my taste a bit,...hmm). So, you didn't see the Joop homme connection? hmm.
Let's hope Bond does a copy of it and makes it better, lol! Sorry, just couldn't hold back!

Paul, I couldn't agree more! That tonka note kept lingering on my wrist for so long. I tried to wash it off in the bathroom of a resturant 3 or 4 times and again when I got home and finally had to take a shower! It gave me a nauseated headache. It is potent and cloying. Aweful stuff. I appologive to the members here. Like I said, the ingredients are of high quality, ergo it is creed, nonetheless, I cannot stand it.

This is good to know. I was trying to figure out how I could sample this. I like sandal wood but I don't like sweet, so now I can forget this one for a while.

Can I just say that Original Santal actully smells better after a couple of tries on the skin.
Sadly, this can hardly be an excuse for putting possum pee in a flacon. One of the greatest errors in taste since Bjork's tragedy in that swan outfit.

    The sample arrived and

to me it smells like Allure pour Homme, but much sweeter. In my case not worth a purchase, especially not for that price.

Oh, Paul, what a nightmare but you make it so funny. *Your children have obviously inherited your sense of humor. You didn't really smell like a quesadilla, it was just lunch time.

I suppose Original Santal answers the question - Will the be a Eau de Parfum version of Joop!? ;D ;D. I like it nevertheless..

Very similar to Joop! in my opinion, not my cup of tea either. With OS, OV & the very dissapointing Love in White as their latest launches they should really contemplate wht the hell they´re doing. Then again when the bling-bling crowd (puffy etc) seems to love the brand (they probably buy ,massive quantities as well) it seems as Olivier & Co caters more to their wishes nowadays. Sad.

Now, it's time someone stands up for Original Santal. Maybe it's crap, but I love Original Santal ( so hoping Prince Barry will back me up a little). Hey, what can I say, even moderators can be wrong sometimes. Fight the power!!, Jeez, one of them loves G2, did I ever say something negative about that?!.....Oooooooh noooo I haven't!!

(Sorry guys, I'm ok now.., just had to let it out..., now where are my pills, ...please don't throw me out of B Notes)

I love Original Santal and I am sorry to say that IMO there is no similarity between OS and Poop....sorry, I meant Joop. As for for G2, my lips are sealed..........and so is my nose when I know that scent is around..Ha ha! Guess what? I am a moderator on another board and I'm not wrong.

If they throw you off Eric, you can come across to the 'other side'. Mind you, after my comments, I might be the one who gets thrown off.

Considering that Pi is in my top five, I have to admit that I like Original Santal. I wear it on my chest under a shirt. That usually tames its sillage. I haven't gotten any complaints so far.

As I previously stated, it is understandably difficult for many here to approach any new Creed fragrance with anything less than the highest expectations. My criticism was based more on the expectation of a sandalwood which would compete with the world's best of that type due to the name "Santal". Although I have and have tried many of the genre, I approached Santal with absolute objectivity. I bought a decant first, then several, and then a bottle as I like this stuff for its originality(I really don't get the Joop connection) and for its great evolution from its pungent top notes to its sweet basenotes. IMHO, one of the better creations in recent memory. P.S.- I am also with COL on the Gaultier2, go figure!

I tried it once, and I am sorry I did. I have no desire to try it again. *This is an unusual reaction for me, because I am usually willing to test a fragrance at least two or three times. *I wouldn't pay a dime for this fragrance. *

Wow. I'm surprised to hear all the negative reactions. I've been loving the stuff so far. It does hit you with a lot at first, but with time the sweetness wanes and the woody, fruity, prickly elements come out. It mellows out and gets very sensual and aromatic. It's only been a couple of days, and I keep appreciating new aspects of it. Probably won't be as great in warmer weather, we'll see.

Cool. I was at Swarowski in Wattens some years ago. Swarowski has one gallery which is next to the café btw. which is installed and supervised by famous BRIAN ENO. As far as I recall it's been stated as the one and only constant public gallery by Brian Eno worldwide.
