    Default What is sillage?

I am new to the discussion board and I keep on reading posts using this word. I went to m-w.com for its definition but it is not listed. I tried translating it from French (assuming it was a French word), but it doesn't make sense.

Will someone be kind enough to define SILLAGE?

    Thanks a lot!

You know how you can smell Joop a mile away? *That's sillage - how it trails off your skin and reaches out and demands attention. *

    And welcome, bro!

SILLAGE is a french word, The origin is nautical. It is the WAKE of a boat or ship as it moves through water. Hence, by analgoy, the word has come to describe in perfumery, the scent-trail a perfume leaves or creates as its wearer moves (or simply just stands) in a room or other place. Pretty simple. voila!

    Rockford,
That thread is excellent. I can't believe I'm learning a lot of things through basenotes (when it comes to parfumerie, anyway).
    Thanks again.

Would an EdT have less sillage than an EdP?

And do womans frags. have more sillage then mens? I can always smell a massive amount of sillage from ladies perfumes.

That's because woman are probably stuffing their bras with a cotton ball dipped in their perfume! A very popular tip that woman do for massive sillage. ;D

I wonder what my pal does when he wears Joop - hmm, perhaps he's dipping his Joop in cotton balls?
