    Default Best SMN

    Hi everybody,

I'm running through a massive Santa Maria Novella enthusiasm phase . I like their well-known creations like Acqua di Colonia, Melograno, Amber Lavender or Muschio (thanks, David!) and want to know more - also about the not-so-common scents like Sicily, Calicanthus, Magnolia or Iris. Any experiences / recommendations?

Kyoto is easily the best IMHO.

Opoponax is great during colder weather and I like Eva. too.

Try "Nostalgia", very good and versatile scent.
"Aqua di Cuba" is a nice tobacco fragance, but for me is very strong.

Santa Maria Novella Peau d'Espagne is a great leathery option.

I enjoy/have enjoyed all that you've listed, particularly Musk and Lavender Ambrata. Spactacular stuff. Potpourri is also interesting, drying down to a very potent, spicy base, so I've always suggested an extremely light application.

Nostalgia is fantastic. Especially for those of us that like to be grease monkeys on the weekend, swapping out alternators and the like.

Got to agree with Sandalwood, Peau d'Espagne is magnificent. I have it in both cologne and extract forms. Heliotropio is very nice too if you like almond scents.
Fine fragrance is alive; it breathes, unfolds and unravels with each passing hour....

Just noticed that you specifically asked about Sicilia. It is a very refreshing, pleasant eau de cologne, but I'm afraid it is gone in sixty seconds. Very fleeting indeed, unlike Opoponax. I'm not a fan of leather scents but PdE is certainly very well-made. Muschio reminded me of Johnson's baby products, Sandalo was harsh, Potpourri was medicinal... I quite liked Zagara (orange blossom) and Ginestra (broom).

One SMN product I'd never be without is their Crema di Barba shaving soap (comes in a tub and you apply it with a badger hair brush) - lovely stuff. Their iris toothpaste looks revolting, but is quite refreshing! The shop in Florence is absolutely out of this world.

    Hi Gerald,

Most everyone here knows my LOVE affair with SMN "ACQUA DI CUBA!" AdC is infact my SOTD...IHMO...AdC is simply one of THE best! PERIOD! Now...that being said...when I first tried NOSTALIGA, I was a bit...UNsure. I forgot about the sample which was in a UNmarked bottle and some months later, I applied the fragrance and...WHOA! I just could NOT recall what this FANTASTIC fragrance was that I had just applied. Then...I remembered! I then ran to my computer and did a post here at Basenotes titled "SLAP MY FACE WITH A LEATHER STRAP!" God...NOSTALIGA is just "out of sight!" Enter : SMN "PATCHOULI" Dear God...what can I say...
SANTA MARIA NOVELLA my have become my favorite House! If I had a few extra hundred dollars to blow...SMN PATCHOULI would be my FIRST choice, followed by NOSTALIGA. (I already own AdC). WARNING...SMN PATCHOULI is NOT for the faint of Heart! A MONSTER fragrance from a OUTSTANDING House! SUPER for Winter! I have also tried (and enjoyed) MAZZ. PATCHOULI and LV PATCHOULI but...SMN PATCHOULI rules! Once I buy and own a bottle of SMN PATCHOULI, it will move right into my TOP five fragrances!

I only recently had the chance to try some SMN scents, but definitely impressed me Nostalgia, wonderful blend of african resins created in honour of an historical "1000 miglia" (a very famous cars race)!
Città di KYoto also hit me; lauched in occasion of the 40th anniversary of the twinning between Florence and Kyoto, it blends the two flowers symbols of these historical towns: florentine iris and lotus flower. A pleasant touch of incense gives a particular touch!

Has anyone ever tried Marescialla? I sniffed it at LAFCO in NY a couple of years ago and remember it as an intense old-fashioned woman's leather? Anyone know it better?
