Default I recommend all BN's do what I did!

Last weeekend I was in an area in LA that had a shop that sold single scented oils. They had 3 different sandlewoods, vetiver, bergamot, ylang-ylang, patchouli, tonka, etc. Almost evey note that I could thing of, they had.

So I spent about 30 minutes smelling many of them. It was very enlightening, to say the least. When I got home and smelled a bunch of my frags, I was surprised on how easy it was to pick out individual notes, even in the complex ones.

It gave me a whole new appreciation of the art of perfumery.

I definately agree, this makes enjoying your scents easier!
The pursuit of philosophy is the hope that there is more to life than we realize. By philosophy, however, we come to realize that in fact there is less to life than previously imagined.

I plan on doing the exact same thing, I imagine if you became familiar enough with different notes it would be very helpful in determining what frags to sample, as you would know what oils you like, and which ones you despise lol.

Absolutely right. The best way to educate your nose is by getting acquainted with sigle notes from essential oils and extracts. I still find it difficult though to single out cumin.

Care to give the name of the shop?

Funny - I actually own most of those essential oils, and they haven't helped my nose pick out notes in scents much at all.

I have most of the essential oils at home. They do give me a lot of assistance in identifying notes in fragrances. But also, don't forget the spice rack with all the herbs and spices--great training for the nose.

    Yes, that`s what I did!
But still some combos make me feel strange and know-nothing...

Maybe we all should take some chemical (damascone, maltol, geraniol, etc.) experience too?

That's what I want to do. As it is now I'm mostly guessing. Maltol=burnt sugar, the damascones=plummy rose etc.

I recommend buying essential oils and put them on blotters so you can evaluate all the different stages of the materials. It's not very expensive and you can use the oils for lots of stuff.
