Thread: Good Chypres

    Default Good Chypres

I'm a fan of chypres with Coriolan being my favourite. Can you please name some other good chypres (no-niche)?
    Thank you.

Try on e-bay - with `vintage Chypre Coty` in search window.
And perfume is always better than EDT.

Right now I`ve seen Vivara by Emilio Pucci - that`s great chypre by its own, but also reminds me Coty.

Amouage Silver Cologne is very good fruity (plum) chypre with best sort of dusty sillage.

Pierre Balmain Jolie Madame is very good leather chypre - also vintage is better. Comes in pink silk box.

Don't feel dumb for asking! This is why we're all here. You also shouldn't feel dumb because I don't know what chypre smells like either and I wouldn't like to be know as dumb either. ;D

So what does chypre smell like?

Mossy woods. You'll have a pretty good idea what that is after trying out Chanel pour Monsieur

A chypre fragrance usually has the notes of patchouli and oakmoss. Notable chypres I can think of are Coriolan, Giorgio Beverly Hills, Aramis and Polo Crest.

Yes! Aramis is a very good representative of Chypres!

Many Chypres also have a leather note together with the mossy woods.

Just a quick search in web brings me that understandable part of document.

    And that`s make sense!

Wow, merci moon_fish! *Am I right in thinking that the word Chypres comes from the French spelling of that eastern Med island and the abundant and aromatic vegetation found there?

    I third Antaeus.

    A few more good ones:

    Madini ~ Chypre

    Caron ~ Yatagan

Caron ~ Le 3rd Man (might be considered an oriental)

Am I totally dumb if I ask: Is Amouage's "Dia", and Geo F. Trumper's "Spanish Leather" Chypres?

    Moonfish, thank you, that's great!
My own 'quick search' has lasted 30', and I know a few things about Cyprus now. I had to give up finding the complete text though. :-?
If you would indicate your source to me I would be so happy! Oh, and maybe I'll talk to Santa about you-know-what again!

Thats what I was hoping for. Thanks! I quite like French, and reading an article on cologne should be alright. Francais is official language in la Suisse. Yes, I'll try my very best with Santa. No need to write, he'll be here on the 24th, and should be arriving in Krasnojarsk on January 6, anno domini 2006 - isn't that the date?
If your bottles get banged, don't blame it on me!

Platinum Egoiste is a pretty good chypre. I used to love it. My tastes have evolved though and I don't wear many scents from this category anymore.
