    Default A much needed hiatus...

    Hey guys,

I think I'm gonna take a break from Basenotes for a while. A few reasons. One, I spend alot of time on here "wasting time" when I should be working on some things. I have some ambitions that I need to get to work fulfilling. Its too easy for me to find distractions to keep myself from facing tasks that need to be done. While I love posting on here and reading what you all have to think, I really need to use the time in other ways right now. So its a matter of time.

Also, I think this hobby can put some of us on the cusp of some OCD-like behavior, and while its fun to joke about it- really, it can be a serious problem. I've spent too much time thinking about fragrances when I should have been focusing on other things. It is kind of a sickness when you can't leave the house without putting on a fragrance. And then also, alot of times I had a subconscious desire to take a bath or shower. I realized it wasn't that I felt dirty, it was just an issue of I wanted to wash off whatever fragrance I was wearing, even if it was a favorite scent.

Today I went to work and didn't wear a fragrance for the first time in as long as I can remember. Every so often I would get that impulse to dab a little something on, but I resisted. And honestly, I felt great after my shift. I'm not wearing anything right now, and I like the feeling of neutrality. I have some serious problems feeling comfortable in my own skin, and I think wearing fragrances may have actually caused this problem to worsen. Plus I need to address my allergies and dependence on OTC nasal spray- which is made worse by colognes. I wake up most nights with my nose blocked off and breathing through my mouth. If I want to kick my habit , I'm gonna have to cut out those things that contribute to the problem. I'm thinking of boxing up my whole drobe and taping it up and putting it in my parents basement, so I won't have my frags lying around. I might keep one or two to wear if I'm going out- once or twice a week, tops. Once I get on some daily allergy medication and kick the nasal spray thing, I'd like to come back to wearing fragrances with a fresh nose. I want to smell the roses, not myself all the time. I've been a bit narcissistic at times, and its not an attractive quality.

So its a time issue, a mental health issue, a physical health issue and a money issue as well. I just paid off all of my credit card debts(It feels great). I told myself I was gonna reward myself with a bottle of Voleur de Roses, but I'm gonna wait. I might get myself a bottle after I resolve my issues.

I might pop in to chat about music or something on the OT boards, but its probably for the best if I don't come here much for a while. I need to get some stuff ironed out in my life, and this seems like a natural decision. I'll miss talking to you, and I just know some stories will happen that I will want to share with you so bad, but I probably won't. I hope I get this stuff worked through soon, because it will be hard to stay away.

I'll miss you guys, but I'll be back at some point down the road. I may come by and read your posts occasionally, but posting myself is something I don't want to be doing much of for a while.

    Stay classy!

    Regards,

    Indie Guy

    Good luck, Indie!

Sounds like a good idea to "detox" from Basenotes for a while. As great as this place is, too much of anything is just too much.
Are you not entertained??? Is this not why you are here??

Sorry to read that, but I completely understand your feelings. Basenotes is a wonderful place with wonderful people, but I can get so competitive and stressful that sometimes I have considered taking a break myself. I'm starting to think that this is not a hobby like stamp collecting or something like that, this is something you carry with you all the time, and temptations are on every corner.
Anyway, I wish you the best of luck and hope to read from you soon.

I know exactly how you feel mate. I took a sabbatical myself for a while from Bnotes. Now I'm back, no doubt annoying the hell out of my fellow Bnoters with my highy-opinionated views!

For me, Basenotes is one of THE great internet discussion boards. But it can also get a bit emotionally-charged. And that can wear you down, or "get to you", after a while.

Hmmm, if that make you feel better and happier that`s ok. Actually this remind me on burning pictures and throwing away anything else what have any connection with my ex girlfriend just to don?t think of her anymore. It is end of one lovely relationship. Or maybe not?

It should be taken not too seriously like everything in life... But I understand you Indie, it's the right thing if you want to "reshape" everything in the right proportion! Good Luck!

This is too sad. You will be missed Indie!!! *:'(

I've been there too. During the tsunami period, i was away from basenotes for about 2 months and i had to restrict myself to just one scent for those two months - Passage d'Enfer. I actually finished the whole bottle in that time. When i came back, my whole perspective about scents changed. Anyway, hope you come back soon. I'll miss your stories.

I actually have been trying to do the same thing, but with no luck.

Ever since I've found Basenotes, I've stopped working out and now having problems resuming to my drawings for my portfolio. I may do it soon, it's eating up my life a little too much... :-[

    Anyway, enjoy the hiatus Indie.

I definitely hear you. I find the community here to be awesome, but I know my relationship with scents and the internet too often become huge time-wasting distractions. I've been thinking of ways to get it under control as well - though for me I blame it more on the internet than on scents.

A hiatus/sabbatical - I think it's always good to find ways to break out of ruts and change your perspective. Good luck to you.

Take as long as you need Indie! I had a break from the site about a year ago and it did me a world of good!

If you find yourself tempted to pop back I can always ban you for a month!

    Best!

yes, it can be addicting. *i was a member of a shave forum, and then it sprang into like 5. *but if it does not take away from work or relationships, whats wrong with chewing the cud with like-minded people. *i have to watch out about ACQUIRING every single cologne that might interest me. now that is a problem

Good Luck Indie, hope you solve whatever problems you have. I actually had a similar problem a while back and I actually took some time off as well back in August, two weeks total. I was finding myself spending too much money and I just minimized my collection down to under 15 bottles. I also cut down on how much I spray a fragrance. Now I only wear fragrances once a day, 4 to 5 times a week, with only two shots to the neck(one shot if it's A*men). I cut down a bit and I'm really working out things better. I also gained some cash by selling some stuff and making decants of stuff. I say myself only wearing Creed SMW 3 to 5 times a year, and by that rate my 4.0 bottle would last my 10 plus years so I thought wise. Anyways best of luck.

I suspect we've all been there at one time or another, in varying degrees. Awhile ago, I took a long time off. Since then, I've come back, though much less active, fewer hours a day. No doubt a matter of finding the right balance. Sometimes to get there, the pendulum has to swing all the way to the other side.

    Hope to see you back.

Good luck Indie, I will iss your posts as well. If I am correct, I believe I read that you work in a bar. If so, all of that cig smoke is probably killing your allergies above anythng else. Also, if your bedroom has carpet, you may have to rip it up ad go with hardwood. Go to the Doctor and get on a regimen of Flonase. In adition, take some liquid claritin everyday. If this does not help, go and see an ENT specialist. Good luck bro! I feel the same way. My posting has trimmed down quite a bit. In fact, it will be hard for me to post much over the next few months. I have been pondering a hiatus as well but still thinking about it.
